더떠서 남이 발을 밟기까지 한다면 곧바로 화가 날 일이다. tread on some
one's corns'라는 표현이 있다. 「티눈 위를 밟다」라는 식의 이 표현은 「
화나게 만들다」라는 뜻을 가진다.
A:I hate being packed like sardines in a crowded bus.
B:I can't blame you. This morning the bus driver stepped on the brake
abruptly, making us jerk forward.
A:Didn't he apologize?
B:Nope. That's why I tried to walk up to the driver to complain. But
he stepped on the accelerator abruptly, making me jerk backward.
A:So, the driver tread on your corns?
B:Right. I got so angry that I shouted at the top of my lungs, and
the driver was so surprised that he stepped on the brake hard.
A:복잡한 버스에 정어리처럼 실려다니는 게 정말 싫어.
B:옳은 이야기야. 오늘 아침에 버스운전기사가 갑자기 브레이크를 밟아서
우리가 앞으로 우르르 쏠리게 만들더라고.
A:운전기사가 사과하지 않던가?
B:아니. 그래서 내가 불평을 하기 위해 앞으로 걸어가려고 했지. 그랬더니
갑자기 가속페달을 밟아서 내가 뒤로 우르르 쏠렸지 뭐야.
A:그래서 운전기사가 자네를 화나게 만들었군?
B:맞아. 내가 너무 화가 나서 목청껏 소리를 질렀지. 그랬더니 운전기사가
깜짝 놀라서 브레이크를 세게 밟는 게 아니겠어.
