것이라는 사실을 금방 알 수 있습니다. 즉, "$658 million을
외화표시증권에 (in foreign currency-denominated securities)
놓았다 (placed)"라고 직역하면 문맥에 맞춰 쉽게 invest로
응용할 수 있는 경우입니다. 내기를 할 때 돈을 거는 것을 bet
(money) on ~으로 표현하는데 이를 place money in (또는
on)으로도 쓸 수 있으므로 이러한 내용을 조금 응용하면 될
것입니다. place가 동사로 쓰이면 '~에 놓다 to put (something)
in (somewhere)' 또는 '~를 상대로 어떠한 조치를 취할 수 있도록
제출, 지급하다 to present before ~ for (consideration,
etc)'라든가 '~을 위한 장소를 찾다 (locate)'와 같은 뜻으로
사용되는 경우가 많습니다.
주식이나 채권에 투자하는 경우 여러분들이 제일 먼저 해야 할
일은 증권회사를 찾아 주문을 내는 일일 것입니다. 이 때 주문을
낸다는 말은 물론 make an order for ~를 사용하면 됩니다.
따라서 He made a purchase order for 100 Samsung common
stocks라 하면 그가 삼성 주식 보통주 100주를 매입하도록
신청했다는 말이 되는데 여기서 made a purchase order 대신에
place를 써서 He placed a buy order for ~와 같이 사용해도
무방합니다. 오히려 place가 쓰이는 문형을 더 많이 보시게
될지도 모르겠습니다.
이와 같이 place가 쓰인 것은 앞에서 말씀 드린 to present
before ~ for의 경우에 해당되는 것으로서 구체적으로 보면 He
presented an order before the broker to buy 100 Samsung
common stocks 와 같이 됩니다. 주문을 낸다는 말을 place an
order라 하는 만큼 발주 그 자체는 order placing이라 합니다.
한 가지 주의해야 될 것은 place an order를 사용하는 경우에
make an order를 사용할 수는 있지만 그 반대의 경우는
어색하다는 것입니다. 다시 말해 He made an order to his
subordinate not to be late any more. (그는 부하 직원에게 더
이상 늦지 않도록 주의하라는 명령을 내렸다.)에서 made를
placed로 바꾸어 쓰는 데는 무리가 있습니다. 따라서 기억하기
쉽게 place an order / order placing은 투자 부문에서 사용되는
용어로 별도로 분류해 생각하는 편이 좋습니다.

(눈에 띄는, 실체가 보이는)을 생각하시면 됩니다. 본 예문에서는
'투자 대상이 눈에 보이는 (visible) 상태에 있다'는 말이므로
실제로 발행되어 있는 (already issued) 상태의 증권을
의미합니다. 따라서 on a basis of ~ 또는 on a ~ basis (~
기준으로)와 함께 생각해 보면 발행되어 있는 외화표시증권
기준으로, 즉 '발행 기준'이 됩니다.
증권 관련 기사에서 outstanding issues라는 것을 자주 보게
되는데 이는 기발행되어 유통 중(in circulation / circulating
in the market)에 있는 (주식, 채권) 종목을 의미합니다. 신규
발행 종목(new issue)이나 채권의 경우 만기가 지나 원리금이
상환된(redeemed) 종목(retired issue)와 대비되어 사용되는
말이므로 잘 알아 두시기 바랍니다.

물가에 대한 기사를 읽다 보면 CPI 라는 말이 등장하는데 이는
Consumers' Price Index라 하여 소비자 물가 지수를 의미하는
말입니다. 즉, 일상 생활에서 가장 밀접하게 사용(즉, 소비)되는
물품들의 가격 변동분을 지수화 하여 나타내고 있는 것으로서
consumers' goods는 "소비재"를 의미합니다.
이러한 consumers' goods에 포함되는 물품(item)으로서는 여러
가지가 있겠지만 가장 대표적인 것으로서 생필품(daily
necessities) 가격, 교통비 (transportation charge),
농수산물(agricultural & fisheries products 또는 간혹
agro-fisheries products라고 하는 경우도 있습니다) 가격을 들
수 있습니다.
이들 가격은 물가 상승(하락)을 소비자들이 피부로 느낄 수 있는
것들로서 중요한 경제 지표(economic indicators)중의
하나입니다. 이러한 소비자 물가의 변동을 보도하는 기사를 하나
소개해 보도록 하겠습니다.

국제선 항공요금 역시 내일부터 15% 인상될 예정이며 지하철
요금도 조만간 동반 상승할 것으로 보인다. 원화의 대폭 절하에

제조업자들은 생산품의 가격을 다투어 인상해 왔다.
버스, 지하철, 항공기 등의 교통수단(transportation)에 대한
교통비는 통칭하여 transportation charge라 하나 각각의 경우
fare를 붙여서 bus fare, subway fare, air fare와 같이
표현합니다.
예문에서의 fare on international flights는 물론 국제선 요금을
가리킵니다. (참고로 국내선은? domestic flight). "몇 퍼센트
오르다/내리다"라는 표현에서 퍼센트 수치 앞에 전치사 by가
쓰이고 있는 것에 주의하시기 바랍니다.
"언제부터"는 보통 "beginning ~"의 형태로 쓰이나 그 외에도
from ~도 있으며 조금 더 격식을 차린 것으로서 effective (from)
~과 같은 것도 함께 알아 두시면 좋습니다. effective (from)을
사용한 문장을 하나 예로 들어 보면, "지난 3월 30일부터 택시
요금이 상승했다"라는 간단히 Taxi fare rose effective March
30와 같이 할 수 있습니다.
예문에서의 be expected to follow suit은 follow suit이 "~의
전철을 밟다, 따르다"이므로 앞에서 언급한 국제선 요금의 인상을
뒤이어 똑 같은 수순을 밟는다는 의미가 되어 지하철 요금도
뒤이어 오른다는 것을 가리킵니다.
cite가 남의 말 또는 글을 인용하는 것을 의미하므로 "Citing
~"은 "~을 인용하여" 즉, " ~을 예로 들어"가 됩니다. 기사
뿐만이 아니라 뉴스에서도 자주 사용되는 문구이므로 잘 기억해
두시기 바랍니다.
"물가가 오르다"를 나타내는 표현 중에는 rise가 대표적인
경우인데 "물가를 올리다"에는 타동사 raise가 사용됩니다.
예문에서는 jack up이라는 표현을 사용했는데 jack은 자동차 등을
수리하기 위해 들어 올릴 때 사용하는 말입니다. 자동차 용구
중에 우리가 흔히 말하는 jack을 생각하시면 되는데 자동차 뿐만
아니라 어떠한 것을 들어 올릴 때에도 사용하는 말입니다.
lift(들어 올리다)와의 차이는 lift가 말 그대로 들어 올리는
것을 가리키는데 비해 jack은 들어 올리긴 올리되 한번에 들어
올리는 것이 아니라 여러 번 펌프질 하듯이 반복적인 행위를 통해
위로 올리는 것을 의미한다는 데 그 차이가 있습니다. 이 jack이
쓰인 jack up이 바로 "물가를 올린다"는 의미로 사용되는 경우가
많습니다. 따라서 jack up the price of ~와 같은 표현도 잘 알아
두실 필요가 있습니다.
CPI에 대한 기사를 계속 읽다 보면 교통비 외에 다른 품목, 예를
들어 construction materials (건설자재), livestock goods
(축산품), vegetables (야채)를 비롯하여 dairy products
(유가공제품), liquor (주류, alcohol도 가능), home appliances
또는 home electronic appliances (가전 용품)와 같은 것들이
줄줄이 나오고 있는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
Major manufacturers of dairy products are poised to raise the
prices 7 to 10 percent further. The prices of powdered milk
will be the first to go up.
주요 유가공 업체는 제품 가격을 추가로 7~10% 인상할 채비를
갖추고 있다. 분유 가격 상승이 그 첫번째가 될 것이다.
be poised to ~는 "~을 할 준비를 갖추다," 즉 be ready to ~와
같은 의미로 사용되는 것으로서 다른 말로 표현하자면 The
manufacturers will soon raise ~와 같이도 나타낼 수 있습니다.
앞서 상승(하락)분을 나타내는 % 앞에 사용되는 전치사 by가 없이
사용된 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이 by는 실제의 표현에서는
생략되어 쓰이는 경우가 많습니다만 여러분이 직접 글을 쓰는
경우에는 가급적 by를 사용하여 작문하는 습관을 들이는 것이
좋습니다.
일반적으로 information은 있는 사실에 대한 객관적인 내용을
가리킨다고 할 때 intelligence는 information을 가공하여
전략적으로 이용할 만한 가치가 있는 형태로 만든 것을
지칭한다고 할 수 있습니다.
몇 달 전 우리 사회를 시끄럽게 만든(that stirred up our
society) 것 중의 하나가 국내 기업의 반도체 제조
기술(semi-conductor manufacturing technology)의 대만
유출(leakage) 사건과 관련된 산업 스파이(industrial espionage
agent) 사건입니다.
국제 무역을 무역전쟁(trade war)이라 표현하는 것이 조금도
이상하지 않은 상황에서 스파이(spy, intelligence agent)라는
말도 자연스럽게 사용되어 산업 스파이라는 용어가 심심찮게
오르내리고 있습니다. 이 부문에서도 여러 가지 관련 용어 및
표현을 걸러낼 수 있는데 오늘은 이와 같은 용어들을 몇 가지
살펴보기로 하겠습니다.
먼저 기본적으로 스파이는 spy 뿐만 아니라 남을 위해서 정보를
빼내오는 대리인이라는 의미에서 secret agent라고 부르는 경우가
더 많으며 그냥 agent라고 부르기도 한다는 사실을 알아두시기
바랍니다. 이러한 spy 활동을 espionage (activity)라 하며
방첩활동은 anti-를 붙여서 anti-espionage라 합니다.
산업 정보의 유출은 leakage를 사용해서 나타내기도 하지만
draining 또는 drainage를 써서 technology drainage라고도
합니다. 기술을 훔치는 것이므로 steal 또는 get away with를
이용해도 무방합니다.

예문에서 볼 수 있듯이 사용되는 표현은 앞서 말씀 드린 몇
가지만 알아 두고 있으면 같은 것들이 반복되어(repetitively)
나타나고 있으므로 그다지 어렵게 생각하실 필요는 없습니다.
문제는 이러한 용어들이 여러분들의 머리 속에 한 묶음으로
얼마나 잘 정리되어 있느냐 하는 것입니다.
유출되는 정보는 일반적인 수준의 것(common or mediocre
technology)은 해당이 안되고 보통 잘 나가는 첨단
기술(up-to-date technology)입니다. 따라서 이러한 기술, 정보
유출과 관련하여 같이 알아두실 것 중의 하나가 첨단기술을
가리키는 말일 것입니다.
첨단 기술은 간단히 advanced technology라고 해도 되나 그
외에도 많이 사용되는 것으로 high-technology (줄여서
high-tech)가 있고 예술의 경지에 이른 기술이라 해서
state-of-the-art technology라고도 합니다. 여기서 state는
경지, 상태라는 말이므로 직역해서 예술(the art)의
경지(state)가 되므로 쉽게 기억하실 수 있을 것입니다.
state-of-the-art는 많이 사용되는 표현이므로 잘 기억해 두시기
바랍니다.
그 외에도 top-notch technology라는 말이 있는데 notch가 기다란
기둥 같은 것에 눈금을 새겨 넣어 비교 따위를 위해 이용하는
것이라 하면 그러한 눈금 표시 중에서 가장 높은 것에 해당된다는
의미에서 top notch는 가장 높은 수준의, 가장 발달한 것을
비유할 때 사용되고 있습니다. 따라서 top-notch technology 역시
첨단 기술을 가리키는 용어 중의 하나입니다.
"정교하게 잘 발달된"이라는 의미로 사용되는 것으로는
sophisticated가 있습니다. sophisticated technology라는 말도
많이 사용되고 있으므로 함께 알아 두시기 바랍니다.
