Job은 구약의 욥기에 나오는 인물로 7자녀를 두고 수많은 가
축을 거느렸으나 한꺼번에 잃는 시련을 겪으나 믿음을 가져
이를 극복하고 하느님께 돌아간 신심이 두터운 의로운 사람
이다.
이 염주열매는 욥이 흘린 눈물방울과 비슷하다 해서 붙여진
이름이다.
Job's tears는 엄격히 말하면 염주열매를 가리키지만 율무와
비슷하여 별 구분없이 쓰이게 된다.
따라서 율무차를 위와 같이 부르게 되었다고 한다.

* college와 university의 차이점은?
-> college : 단과대학 또는 대학원이 없는 경우
university : 단과대학들이 모여 이룬 종합대학 또는 대학원
과정이 있는 경우를 말한다.
그러나 일반적인 경우는 위와같은 원칙을 따른 구분이 아니라
예외적인 경우가 더 많다.
즉, 단과대학의 경우 school이란 말을 써서
school of management : 경영대학
school of education : 사범대학
law school : 법과대학이라고 한다.
university 앞에 the를 붙이는 경우와 안붙이는 경우가 있는
데 이것은 학교마다 다르다고 한다.
즉 일률적으로 구분하기가 어렵다고 한다.
홍차는 red tea라 하지않고 black tea, Ceylon tea라 한다.
______ 우리가 마시는 홍차는 인스턴트 홍차로 물에 넣으면 붉은
색의 차가 된다. 하지만 영국에서는 찻잎을 우려내서 마시
기 때문에 우러나온 차의 색이 연한 검은색인데서 기인해
black tea라고 부른다.
그리고 영국은 식민지였던 실론, 인도, 아프리카의 케냐에
서 홍차를 들여왔었는데, 스리랑카가 차의 주산지라는데서
홍차를 Ceylon tea라고도 부른다.(註: 실론은 스리랑카의
옛 지명임.)
근데 실제 영국인들은 홍차를 녹차(green tea)나 다른 차
종류와 구분할 때가 아닌 경우에는 그냥 tea라고 부르며
이건 미국에서도 마찬가지이다.

# Journalism 101 (One O One)
journalism 101은 journalism 원론이란 말입니다. 대학교 1학년생들이
신문방송학 과정 맨 처음에 배우는 원론 강의의 코드번호를 가리켜서
journalism 101..이렇게 이야기 하죠.
미국대학에서는 curriculum강좌 번호를 적을때에는 인문이나 개론 강의는
101로 표시합니다. 예를 들어 정치학 입문은 Politics 101, 경제학입문은
Economics 101..이런식으로 나타내죠.
본래 대학마다 차이는 있겠지만요 대체적으로 미국대학에는 백단위로
시작하는 것은 대학교 1학년의 교과과정이고 이백단위(201,222..)는
대학교 2학년과정, 삼백단위는 3학년과정, 사백단위는 대학교 4학년
과정.. 그리고 육백이나 팔백단위는 석사과정에서 박사과정 (박사과정은
구백단위도 있죠).. 이런 식으로 교과과목이름앞에 놓지요.
예를 들어 journalism 101은 대학교 1학년생이 듣는 강좌가 되겠고
journalism 910은 박사과정의 학생들이 듣는 과목.. 이런식으로
숫자로 구분하는 경우가 많습니다. 이렇게 대학강좌 가운데서 입문,
또는 개론을 나타내던 101은 그 뜻이 발전해서 각 학문의 원론이나 기초
라는 뜻 이외에도 기본상식이라는 의미로도 사용됩니다
Q : 음주운전과 관련이 있다고 하는 DUI, DWI에 대해서 알 수 있을까
요?
A : 음주운전은 세계 어느나라에서건 불법이죠. 적발시에는 과중한 처
벌이 주어지구요! 미국의 경우 음주운전을 DUI, DWI 둘로 나누는
데 그 차이는 취한 정도에 따라서 구분하고 있죠.
DUI 는 Driving under the influence 의 약자로서 술을 마시거나
마약을 해서 그로인한 영향이 나타나는 상태에서의 운전을 말하고
요, 이것을 달리 Drink Driving라고 하기도 하고 이런 운전자를
Drink driver라고 말하죠.
DWI 는 Driving while intoxicated 의 약자로서 만취한 상태에서
의 운전을 말합니다. 이런것을 drunk driving 또는 drunk on
alcohol 이라고 얘기하고 이런 운전자는 Drunk driver 라고 하죠.

An announcer is anyone who announces something, anyone who gives
information, so an anchor and an M.C. is announcer and
sometimes a reporter can be an announcer.

Man is unique among animals in two broad ways.

우리는 스포츠 경기로 이루어진 가장 큰 행사인 경기를 올림픽 게임이라 부릅니다.
그렇다면 Game과 Sport를 특별히 구분해서 사용하는 이유가 있을까요?
일반적으로 Sport라고 할 때는 육체적 능력을 기반으로 고도의 숙련된 기술을 요하는
활동을 말합니다. Sport는 전통적의미로는 아래의 보기와 같이 공을 이용한 실외운동을
말합니다. 물론 지금은 그 밖의 운동도 지칭하게 되었지만요.

어쨌든 우리가 Game에 관하여 말할 때는 두 팀이나 두 개인이 서로 맞붙어서 하는 것을 의미하지요.
