외국어로서 영어를 공부하는 것을 언어학에서 분류할 때 영어권 밖에서
배우는 것은 Foreign Language..이렇게 이야기 하고요. 영어권 나라에서
배우는 영어는 Second Lagnuage.. 이렇게 분류가 되지요. 여러분께서
영어 교육학에 관심이 있으신 분은 ESL이라던가 EFL이라는 말을 들어 보
셨을 겁니다. ESL(English as a Second Language) 라는 말이구요. EFL은
(English as a Foreign Language) 라는 말이거든요. 바로 이런 것도 이
앞에서 분류된 관점에서 분류된 명칭입니다. 가끔 Second language를 우
리 학교에서 공부하는 제 2외국어와 혼동하고서 우리의 Seond language
는 영어입니다..하시는 분이 있는데요, 그것은 잘못 된 겁니다. 우리에
게는 Second language는 없습니다. 전부다 Foreign language입니다.

approaches the study of a new language with knowledge of social customs
and of history, and with a world picture of change and growth gained by
general reading or study.
어린이보다 어른이 언어를 배우기 어렵다는 일반적인 이론은 현대 교육학자들이
행한 실험 연구로 사실이 아니라는 것이 밝혀졌다.
조기 교육의 노력은 어린이의 경험과 흥미에 한계가 있기 때문에 실패한다.
어른은 아이보다 생활 경험과 어휘가 다양하며 지적인 어른은 생활 관습과
역사에 관한 지식을 가지고 새로운 언어 공부를 시작한다. 또한 일반적인
독서와 학습을 통해 얻어진 세계적 변화와 발전에 대한 인식도 도움을 준다.
