strange는 익숙하지 않은 것(unfamiliarity)을 언제나 암시하고, 생소한 것·자연스럽지 않은 것·모르는 것 따위에 적용된다.

peculiar는 종잡을 수 없는 것·독특한 성질을 가진 것을 가리킨다.

odd는 보통인 것 또는 관습적인 것에서 벗어난 것을 암시하고, 거의 기괴한(bizarre) 것에 가까운 것을 나타낸다.

queer는 odd의 뜻에 기괴(eccentricity)·예사롭지 않은 것(abnormality)·수상스러움(suspicion)의 뜻이 강조되어 첨가된 것을 말한다.
