Seven North Korean Agents Still On Run

He said that about seven North Koreans were believed to be still
at large as of yesterday afternoon, including three special
commandos, two guides and two submarine crew members.

조원 2명등 모두 7명이라고 국방부는 밝혔다.

Lee Kwang-soo, 31, who was captured Wednesday evening in
southern Kangnung, was quoted as saying that each of the three
special North Korean commandos at large wore South Korean Army
uniforms and helmets and each possessed an M-16 rifle, 90 rounds
of ammunition, two grenades, a handgun, a camera and a sack.

But a military source said that the three special commandos may
have already escaped a cordon, as they had left the wrecked
submarine five to six hours before the massive manhunt started at
around 5 a.m. Wednesday. There's a possibility that they may try

around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Lee has confessed.

Some key members of the remaining five North Korean armed
infiltrators may have escaped the South Korean military search
cordon already, an ex-North Korean armed agent said yesterday.
과거 북한 무장 공작원으로 활동했다 귀순한 김신조씨는 23일 "도주
중인 5명의 침투 간첩 중 일부 핵심공작원들은 이미 군수색지역을 벗어
났을 것"이라고 추정했다.

``North Korea spares no effort in raising an armed agent by
pouring in years of training and education into the developing of
agents, so that hundreds of ordinary combatants can never match
one armed agent,'' he said.
김씨는 "북한은 공작원 한명을 양성하기 위해 수년간의 훈련과 교육
을 투입한다. 따라서 일반 전투원 수백명도 공작원 한 사람과 대적할
수 없을 정도다"라고 말했다.

He charged that prompting continued clashes with military search
troops in the cordon set up by the Army around Kangnung areas may
be aimed at offering armed agents ``enough'' time to safely
escape.
그는 "작전지역 내에서 수색 부대와 계속적인 교전을 촉발시키고 있
는 것도 공작원의 안전한 도피를 위해 '충분한' 시간을 벌어주기 위한
목적"이라고 밝혔다.

Crew members or other ordinary combatants, accompanied with
fleeing North Korean armed agents, may possibly be used as just
``consuming issues'' for the agents' safety, he contended.
승조원이나 일반 전투원들은 도주중인 공작원을 보호하기 위한 일종
의 '소모품'이라는 것이 그의 주장이다.

But he said the exact nature of the mission of dispatched armed
agents is hard to ascertain now because armed agents on missions
are the only to be briefed on the mission.
김씨는 그러나 "공작원의 임무는 공작원 자신 밖에 모르기 때문에 남
파 공작원의 정확한 임무에 대해서는 현재로서는 확신을 가지고 말할
수는 없다"고 밝혔다.
