2/3의 상피, 뇌막, 안면 하방부의 피부 등에 일반적인 감각 신경을 분포한다.
trigeminal nerve (삼차신경) 발생학적으로 구강과 안면을 포함하는 제1새궁 (first brachial
arch)으로부터 유래되는 구조물에 대한 체성 감각 분포 (somatosensory innervation)를 담당
하는 두개신경 (제V뇌신경)으로서 3개의 주된 분지 - 안지 (ophthalmic, V1), 상악지
(maxillary, V2), 하악지 (mandibular, V3) - 에 의해 분포된다. 이 혼합 신경의 운동 섬유는
주로 악설골근 (mylohyoid), 악이복근의 전복 (anterior belly of the digastric), 구개범장근
(tensor veli palatini), 고막장근 (tenor tympani muscles)은 물론 저작근에 분포한다.
