The quota is a hardly defensible barrier to free trade,
regardless of the *rationale to *sustain it. No Korean would
deny that the preservation of our unique culture and its
identity has an essential significance. But, the strength of
our cultural identity is not so fragile as to totally
disintegrate upon the opening of our film market. Nor will
the scrapping of the quota make Korea an American cultural
colony, which was the case being made by protesters Thursday.
This incredible claim cannot be sustained on *empirical
grounds. None of the countries of the world has, thus far,
been a victim of American cultural imperialism, although
their markets are fully open to U.S. movies.
