During much of the two months, the mother bear sleeps, and although her heart
rate, respiration, and metaboilsm drop considerably, her sleep is not
hibernation. Her temperature stays constant and unlike true hibernators who need
several days to awaken, the mother polar bear can spring into action almost
instantly. In December or January her cubs are born-blind, hairless, a pound and
a half in weight, more fetus than young animal. From this moment on, few mothers
in nature are so devoted to their young.
이 2개월의 대부분 동안 어미곰은 잠을 잔다. 그런데 맥박, 호흡, 신진대사는
상당히 떨어지지만, 어미곰의 잠은 겨울잠(동면)이 아니다. 왜냐하면, 체온이
일정하고, 며칠이 걸려야 깨어나는 정말 동면하는 동물들과는 달리, 어미곰은 거의
순식간에 깨어날 수 있기 때문이다. 12월이나 1월에 새끼가 태어나는데, 새끼는
시력이 없고, 털이 없으며, 무게는 1파운드 반인데, 이것은 동물의 새끼라기보다는
태아에 더 가깝다. 이 순간부터, 어미곰만큼 자기 새끼에게 헌신하는 어미동물은 거의
없다.
이 때문에 겨울잠에서 깨어난 뒤에는 일정한 휴식시간이 필요하다고 합니다.

평소 다람쥐가 활동할 때 심장 박동수는 1분에 150회 정도인데, 겨울잠을 잘 때는 1분에 5회 정도로 대폭 줄어듭니다.
