The two-phase project for the 18-km waterway primarily intended
to alleviate heavy inland cargo traffic will be completed in
2010, according to the ministry's basic plan.
건교부의 기본계획안에 따르면 심각한 육상 화물 교통난 완화를 주목
적으로 하는 총연장 18km의 경인운하는 2단계로 나눠 건설되며 2010
년 완공 예정이다.
``Currently, the transportation of containers to Seoul from
Pusan is heavily dependent on the Seoul-Pusan Expressway,'' said
a ministry official. ``When the canal is completed, containers
will be carried on sea to Inchon and then through the canal, to
Seoul.''
건교부 관계자는 "부산에서 서울로 올라오는 컨테이너 운반은 거의
전적으로 경부선에 의존하고 있는 실정이다. 운하가 완공되면 해상을
통해 컨테이너를 인천으로 옮긴 뒤, 운하를 거쳐 서울로 가져올 수 있
게 될 것"이라고 말했다.
