◆ allegory, parable, fable
우리말로 번역했을 때 모두 "우화, 비유담" 등에 해당되는 말들입니다.
1) allegory : 풍유, 우화, 비유담 -> 윤리를 직접적으로 언급하진 않으나 독자로 하여금
깨닫게 해주는 이야기로 보통 많은 인물들과 사건들을 엮어서 길고 정교하게 만듭니다.
Dante's Divine Comedy is an allegory based on the struggle between the city-states of what is now Italy.
(단테의 신곡은 현재 이탈리아인 당시의 도시들 사이에서 벌어지는 고난을 담은 풍유이다.)
2) parable : 우화, 비유(담) -> parable도 allegory와 같이 윤리를 직접적으로 언급하지는
않습니다. 그러나 비슷한 이야기를 끌어내어 윤리를 간접적으로 보여줍니다.
The parables of the New Testamet make abstract moral principles concrete and vivid.
(신약성서에 나오는 우화들은 구체적이면서도 생생한 윤리적 이론들로 되어 있다.)
3) fable : (동물을 사람에 비긴) 우화,[총칭] 전설, 신화, 지어낸 이야기, 꾸며낸 일(fiction),
잡담, 객담, 거짓말(lie) -> 동물이 사람처럼 말하고 행동하면서 그리는 이야기로 보통
맨 나중에 윤리를 가르칩니다.
The fable of the tortoise and the hare drives home the moral that steady, persistent
application is more rewarding in the end than arrogant, unstable brilliance.
