알아둘 일
지불에는 현금과 수표 등의 지불 수단과 기간의 문제, 일시불인지
할부인지, 몇 회에 걸쳐서 지불하는 것인지 등의 문제를 결정해야
합니다. 일반적으로 국제적 거래에서는 「신용장」 letter of
credit, LC의 개설이 행해지고 있습니다. 즉, 구매자 측의 거래
은행이 지불에 대한 책임을 진다는 취지의 서류를 작성하여
이것을 매도자 측에 교부하고, 그것을 수취한 매도자 측은 지불
보증을 받은 셈이 되기 때문에 안심하고 제품을 출하할 수
있습니다.
[경제영어 이해하기] Savings account
Short accounts make long friends 라는 말을 들어 보셨는지요?
account는 무엇보다도 먼저 은행 계좌를 떠올리기가 쉬우므로
short accounts라 하면 "짧은 계좌?"라고 의아해 하실지도
모르겠습니다만 account의 기본적인 뜻은 "계산," "셈"이므로 이
속담은 계산이 빨라야 친구와의 관계가 오래간다는 말입니다.
다시 말해 친한 사람일수록 금전 관계 등은 깨끗이 해 둘 필요가
있다는 것을 암시하고 있는 말입니다.
account와 관련된 표현은 상업의 역사가 엄청나게 오래 된 만큼
매우 다양하게 사용되고 있습니다만 account가 응용된 표현은
우선 제쳐 두고 계좌라는 의미에서의 account를 살펴보기로
하겠습니다.
미국에서와 같이 개인 수표 발급이 자리를 잡은 곳에서는 은행
구좌를 열 때 savings account와 checking account라는 두 가지
계좌를 개설하여 한쪽에는 돈을 넣어 두고 다른 한 쪽은 수표
발급시 (when drawing checks) 돈이 인출되는 용도로 사용하게끔
하고 있어 우리에게는 약간 익숙하지 않은 면이 있습니다.
그러나 보통 savings account라 하면 미국에서나 우리나라에서나
마찬가지로 돈을 넣어 두는 계좌라는 의미에서는 별다른 차이가
없습니다. 최근의 저축 규모의 증가와 관련된 기사를 한 번
보기로 하겠습니다.

고금리의 영향으로 국내 은행의 저축 예금 규모가 이 달 들어
처음으로 170조원이 넘었다고 한국은행이 어제 발표했다. 은행을
비롯하여 제2금융권에서도 더 많은 저축을 끌어들이기 위해
경쟁적으로 금리를 올리고 있는 가운데 사람들이 단기간에
고수익을 올릴 수 있는 저축 상품을 찾고 있는 것이다. 은행
관계자는 "대부분의 예금주들은 3개월에서 6개월 짜리의 단기
저축 상품을 선호하고 있다"고 말했다.
예금하는 것을 deposit이라 하므로 예금자는 depositor라고
한다는 것은 기본적으로 알아 두시기 바랍니다.
위 예문에서는 문맥상 별로 어려운 표현이 있는 것은 아니나
이러한 부문에서 자주 등장할 만한 것들을 몇 가지 짚고 넘어갈
필요가 있습니다.
예컨대
interest rates hike-up (금리 상승)
domestic banks (국내 은행)
exceed ~ (~을 넘다)
for the first time this month (이 달 들어 처음으로)
high-yield (고수익, high-yielding이라 하면 "고수익의," 또는
"고수익을 내는")
banking sector (일반적으로 제1금융권을 지칭)
non-banking sector (일반적으로 은행권을 제외한 제2금융권을
생각하면 무리없음)
attract more deposits (attract 대신 draw를 써도 무방)
opt for ~ (~을 선호하다. prefer A to B를 사용한다면 이
문장에서는 opt for를 prefer로 대체 가능)
와 같은 표현들은 잘 기억해 두시기 바랍니다.
참고로 예문에서와 같이 bank official이라 해서 번역할 때 "은행
관리"라는 어색한 표현 대신 자연스런 우리말로 "은행
관계자"라고 하는 것이 좋습니다. 사소한 것 같더라도 막상
사용하거나 들어 보면 금방 어색한 것을 느낄 수 있으므로 이러한
것에도 주의를 기울이시기 바랍니다.
예금에 따른 수익은 보통 이자(interest)로 대표되는데 이러한
이자 등의 수익을 yield라고 하므로 저축 상품에서 발생하는
소득은 yield on savings deposit라고 합니다.
요즘과 같이 금리 변동(interest rate fluctuation)이 심한
때에는 금융기관 (financial institutions)들이 시장 금리와
연동되어 움직이는 저축상품을 많이 내놓게 되는 것이 일반적인
현상입니다. 이와 같이 "~에 연동되어 움직이다"는 영어로는
"move in combination with ~"라 하면 되는데 다음 문장에서
사용된 표현과 한 번 비교해 보시기 바랍니다.

이 예문에서는 앞서 말씀드린 in combination with와 같은
우리말과 직접적인 대응 관계에 있는 표현을 사용하지는
않았습니다만 그와 같은 의미로서 bear fluctuation이라는 말을
썼습니다.
bear는 "~을 품다," "~을 담다"라는 의미이므로 여기서는 reflect
또는 represent (반영하다)와 같은 의미로서 사용되어
금융시장에서의 금리 변동 (interest rates fluctuations)를
반영하는 상품이라는 의미를 충분히 살려 주는 표현이 됩니다.
예문에서의 new products for savings는 new savings accounts라
바꾸어도 같은 뜻이 됩니다. 번역할 때 항상 염두에 두셔야 할
부분은 우리말로 자연스럽게 나올 수 있도록 어느 정도의
융통성을 가질 필요가 있다는 것입니다. savings account라 해서
반드시 저축계좌라고 번역하지 마시고 전후 문맥을 파악하여 저축
상품이라고 옮기는 것이 좋습니다.
account가 응용되는 표현은 상당히 많습니다. "계좌"라고 단순히
암기만 하지 마시고 이번 기회에 사전을 펴고 여러 가지 응용
표현을 몇 가지라도 공부해 두실 필요가 있습니다.
기존에 주식거래계좌가 있는 사람도 금거래를 위해서는 증권사에서 금거래계좌 개설이 필요하다.
