Plants are known to react to environmental pressures such as wind, rain,
and even human touch. Coastal trees, for example, become shorter and
stronger in response to strong winds and heavy rainfall. In a laboratory
study conducted at Stanford University, the same changes in plant growth
patterns were brought about by touching plants twice a day. The
researchers also found that these growth changes resulted from gene
activation. Their findings indicate that this gene actuation did not
occur unless there was direct stimulation.

1. (사역) <남에게> 시키다[하게 하다];▶ have 대신에 get을 쓰는 것은 주로 (口)이나,
get에서는 [Ⅴ명to do]형이 되는 일에 주의. 의미상으로 have는 get보다 간접적이고 소극적인 사역을 나타냄이 보통).

The center is very close to the large islands like Puerto Rico
and Hezbanella that blocks off the inflow from the south and
the Caribbean. And they have a hard time strengthening and
in fact they often even, uh, weakened somewhat. In this case
as seen looks to us like it's gonna stay far enough off, uh,
these, uh, to the north of these islands and we sure do
indeed see some strengthening. With 75-mile-an-hour winds,
Debby apparently caused little damage on Antigua and other
small islands in the Caribbean.
