"휴강"이라고 써 있더군요. 외국인 친구가 왜 시험을 안 보고 내
려오냐고 해서, '휴강'이라는 말이 생각이 안나서 웃음으로 때우
고 내려왔는데...
"오늘 휴강입니다." "오늘은 강의가 없습니다."를 어떻게 표현하
나요?
[A] 오늘은 휴강입니다. 오늘은 강의가 없습니다.
휴강 = 수업이 없다.
=> There is no class today.

대학에서 강의를 듣지않고, 강의를 듣는 것을 청강
(Audit) 또는 "Sit in on"이라고 표현합니다.
미국의 대학에서 청강을 원할때는 반드시 담당교수에게
허락을 얻어야 되는데, 교수의 성격에 따라서 청괄을
좋아하기도 하고, 귀챦아 하기도 하지요.
아뭏든, 청강을 원할때는 교수님께 찾아가서

journalism 101은 journalism 원론이란 말입니다. 대학교 1학년생들이
신문방송학 과정 맨 처음에 배우는 원론 강의의 코드번호를 가리켜서
journalism 101..이렇게 이야기 하죠.
미국대학에서는 curriculum강좌 번호를 적을때에는 인문이나 개론 강의는
101로 표시합니다. 예를 들어 정치학 입문은 Politics 101, 경제학입문은
Economics 101..이런식으로 나타내죠.
본래 대학마다 차이는 있겠지만요 대체적으로 미국대학에는 백단위로
시작하는 것은 대학교 1학년의 교과과정이고 이백단위(201,222..)는
대학교 2학년과정, 삼백단위는 3학년과정, 사백단위는 대학교 4학년
과정.. 그리고 육백이나 팔백단위는 석사과정에서 박사과정 (박사과정은
구백단위도 있죠).. 이런 식으로 교과과목이름앞에 놓지요.
예를 들어 journalism 101은 대학교 1학년생이 듣는 강좌가 되겠고
journalism 910은 박사과정의 학생들이 듣는 과목.. 이런식으로
숫자로 구분하는 경우가 많습니다. 이렇게 대학강좌 가운데서 입문,
또는 개론을 나타내던 101은 그 뜻이 발전해서 각 학문의 원론이나 기초
라는 뜻 이외에도 기본상식이라는 의미로도 사용됩니다
저는 그분의 강의를 들은 적이 있습니다.

They started with fresh milk and cream and added lots of natural flavorings, lots of fresh fruits, and lots of imagination.
To get people to try their product, Jack and Bill gave out free samples of ice cream everywhere they went.

Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”
Archibald Spooner는 영국에서 말의 실수로 유명하다.

lecturing on the life and writing of Edgar Allan Poe. He noticed one
student with a blank stare and decided to try to catch him off guard.
"Mr. Thompson, since you seem uninterested in what I have to say, I can
only conclude that you already have a vast knowledge of Poe. Perhaps you
would care to give the other members of your class the benefit this wisdom
by describing the man in one word." Without a change of expression, the
student replied, "Dead."

One day, Miss Brown, the teacher whose turn it was, made the story
particularly exciting, and the youngsters were delighted. One boy asked if Miss
Brown might not give the lesson more often. "We like her very much," he
explained, "because she hasn't any morals."

대부분 딱딱한 느낌의 문장에 사용되는 일이 많다. 「do nothing
but+원형」이 되면 「~이외에는 아무것도 하지 않는다」라는
것으로부터 「~만 하고 있다」가 된다.
