(2) 추수축제일이나 추수감사절을 지내는 나라도 많고 조상을 추앙하는 날을 정해 놓고 있는 문화권도 많다. 그러나 한국의 추석은 그 유례가 드물다. 역사학자의 설명에 의하면 추석명절은 2000년 전 신라 3대 왕 재임시에 시작되었다고 한다. 추석은 여러 가지 의미를 내포하고 있다. 추석은 일년 추수를 하늘에 감사하는 날이며 또한 다음해에도 풍년이 되기를 기도하는 날이고, 일가친척에 은혜를 베푼 선조에 감사의 제물을 바치는 날이다. 또한 추석은 말할 것도 없이 가족들이 서로 모여 즐겁게 음식을 나누어 먹는 날이며, 밤에는 휘영청 밝은 만월의 달빛 아래서 원무를 추는 행사가 벌어지는 날이다.

(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

편지 라는 뜻으로서 이 때 bread and butter 라는 뜻은 '식사'를 의미
합니다. 미국에서는 누구의 집에서 묵거나 식사를 하고 나서는 감사의
편지를 보내는 것이 예의라고 생각하지요. 보통 bread and butter let-
ter에는 무사히 집으로 돌아왔다는 내용과 식사를 대접해 주어서 고맙
다는 내용을 적습니다. 그리고 bread and butter라는 말이 생계수단이
라는 뜻으로 쓰일 때에는 우리 말의 '밥줄'과 비슷한 말이 되지요. 즉
This is my bread and butter. 라고 하면 '이게 제 밥줄입니다.' 라는
뜻이 됩니다. 참고로 이런 말보다 좀 더 고상하게 표현하려면 This is
how I'm make my living. (이것은 제 생계 수단입니다.) 이렇게 이야
기를 하면 되겠습니다.
