Fresh Food Bank, the first in South Africa, has been set up by the Fresh Produce Market and Johannesburg City to help feed the needy.
The program was officially launched by Mayor Masondo yesterday.
“This program aims to provide for the immediate and basic needs of those who are most vulnerable in this city,” he said.
Fresh foodstuff will be distributed to orphanages, old age centers, the homeless and the disabled.
The program was originally designed by the market wholesale suppliers to help the orphans.
And its scope has expanded since Johannesburg City decided to cooperate.
Bernard Magabe, an executive of the food bank, said that the joint venture would serve as an example to other cities.
남아프리카에서 최초인 신선 식품 은행은 빈곤 계층에게 식량을 지원하기 위해 청과물 시장과 요하네스버그 시에 의해 설립되었다.
그 프로그램은 어제 Masondo 시장에 의해 공식적으로 시작되었다.
“이 프로그램은 우리 시의 취약계층에게 당면하고 기본적으로 필요한 것들을 제공하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다.” 하고 그는 말했다.
