Windows 윈도우즈 *미국 마이크로 소프트사의 operation system 상품으로, GUI(Graphical Users Interface)가 특징이다.

And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography.
우리가 설계한 매킨토시에 그 기능을 모두 집어넣었으니까요. 아마 아름다운 서체를 가진 최초의 컴퓨터가 아니였나 생각합니다.
If I had never dropped in on that single course in college,
만약 제가 그 서체 수업을 듣지 않았다면
the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.
매킨토시의 복수서체 기능이나 자동 자간 맞춤 기능은 없었을 것이고
And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.
맥을 따라한 윈도우도 그런 기능이 없었을 것이고, 결국 개인용 컴퓨터에는 이런 기능이 탑재될 수 없었을 겁니다.

그나마 오늘은 다행스럽게도 앞에 서 있던 차들이 모두 나가서
쉽게 차를 뺄 수 있었다. 계기판을 들여다보니 기름이 별로
없었다. 가는 도중에 기름을 먼저 넣어야겠다. 기껏 안전벨트까지
매고 보니 사이드 미러가 접힌 채로 그대로 있다. 할 수 없이
투덜거리며 다시 나와 원상태로 돌려 놓았다. 백미러와 좌우
사이드 미러를 조정하고 시동을 걸었다. 김이 서리는 것을
방지하기 위해 창을 조금 열어놓았다. 악셀레터에다 발을 올려
놓았다. 주차장에서 차를 뺄 때마다 그 놈의 사각 지대 때문에
애를 먹는다. 사각 거울이라도 장만해야지.
But, today, I was lucky. All the cars in front of my spot
were gone, so I could easily drive out. The fuel gauge on the
dashboard was on empty. I thought I'd gas up on the way. It
was only after I buckled up that I found the driver's side
mirror had been pushed back out of position. Grumbling, I got
out, set it properly, got back in the car. After adjusting
the rear view mirror and side mirrors to get a clean view, I
started the engine. I left a window open a little bit to keep
the windshield from fogging up. I put my foot on the gas
pedal. The damn blind spots make it hard for me to back out.
I'd buy a couple of extra mirrors.
◈ 설명
1. Spot: 자신이 있던 주차 공간을 말합니다. Parking Space와
같습니다.
2. Drive out: 차를 몰고 (drive) 빠져 나온다 (out)는 말이지요.
차를 몰고 들어가는 거면 drive in이라고 했겠지요? 그래서 차를
몰고 들어가서 영화를 보는 극장을 drive-in theater라고 하지요.
3. Fuel gauge는 자동차 계기판의 연료계를 말합니다. 연료
게이지라고도 하지요. 연료계가 empty를 가리키고 있다는 말을
the fuel guage was on empty 라고 한 것입니다. 연료계가 full을
가리킨다면?

4. Dashboard: 자동차 계기판을 말합니다. 일반적으로
"다시방"이라는 말을 쓰지요? Dashboard를 일본식으로 말하는
거지요. 운전석에 있는 장비와 계기들을 살펴보겠습니다.
햇빛을 가리는 바이져. 차양: Visor
백미러: Rearview mirror
계기: Dashboard/instrument panel
연료계. 연료 게이지: Fuel guage/gas gauge
온도계. 온도 게이지:Temperature gauge

악셀: Accelerator/gas pedals. Gas pedal을 더 많이 씁니다.

4. Gas up: 기름을 넣는다는 말입니다.
5. On the way: 가는 중에. 목적지까지 밝히려면,
I'd gas up on my way to school.
학교가다 기름 넣어야지.
6. buckle up: 안전 벨트를 멘다는 말이지요.
Be sure to buckle up when you drive.
운전할 때는 안전벨트를 메야지.
7. driver's side mirror: 운전석 사이드 미러. 자동차의 외관을
살펴보지요.

방향지시등. 깜빡이: Turn signal

8. Pushed back out of position: 뒤로 젖혀져 있었다는
말이지요. Out of position은 제 자리에서 벗어나 있다는
말입니다.
9. Grumble: 투덜거리는 거지요. 발음을 해보세요. 정말 투덜대는
느낌이 들지요.
Stop grumblig, and do your work!
그만 투덜대고 일 좀해라!
10. To get a clean view: 깨끗한 시야를 확보한다는 말이지요.
11. Start the engine: 시동을 걸다.
12. Fog up: 비오는 날에는 창에 김이 서리지요.
13. Put my foot on the gas pedal: 가속 페달 (악셀)에다 발을
올려 놓는다는 말입니다.
발을 뗀다면?
Take you foot off the gas pedal.
가속 페달에서 발을 떼야지.
가속 페달로 속도를 조절하지요?
속도를 줄이는 건:
You slow down.
속도를 내는 건:
You pick up speed or speed up.
브레이크는 제동을 거는 데 쓰고,
브레이크를 밟는 건:
You jam or slam on the brakes, or simple brake gently (or
violently).
14. blind spots: 사각 지대를 말합니다.
15. Back out: 후진해서 나오다. Drive out의 반대지요? 후진을
하려면 기어를 후진에다 놓아야 합니다.
Before you back out, put the car into reverse.
기어를 전진에다 놓으려면
Put the car into drive.
기어를 주차에다 놓으려면,
Put the car into park.
