It has its origin in the Sinla era more than two thousand years ago, when…
→ 대대로 전수되다: be passed on generation after generation
ANS) Historically it has its origin in the Sinla era more than two thousand years ago, when Sinla organized the Hwarang(Flowery Youth Corps) to train young people in the arts of war, literature and service to the country.
→ 많은 공통점을 갖다: have a great deal in common

→ 원무: circle dance
(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

「중요시하지 않다」는 「~의 중요성을 경시한다」즉 neglect(또는 be negligent of ~) the importance; underestimate the significance로 표현한다.
(ANS 1) Perhaps because of the historical course (which) the Korean people have gone through, they seem to have so far been rather negligent of the significance of taking good care of their health.
(ANS 2) It seems that the Koreans have so far rather underestimated the importance of taking good care of their health. This is perhaps due to the course of history they have passed through. ~31

Most people act superstitiously from time to time.
Many persons may joke about keeping away from bad luck by not walking under a ladder or avoiding the number 13.
But they have such beliefs anyway.
Scholars once believed that all superstitions dated back to man's early history.
But many superstitions have appeared in relatively recent times.

Many people went outside around August 27 this year to observe the close encounter between Earth and Mars.
On August 27, when Mars was closer to Earth than ever in human history,
the one-way travel time of light was just 3 minutes and 6 seconds.
Thus, if you had turned a light toward Mars that day, it would have reached Mars in 186 seconds.
Mars was so bright that even the lights of the city didn't get in the way.
If you missed this astronomical show, you're really out of luck.
Mars will not be this close again until the year 2287.

Throughout the short history of the exploration of space, several space stations have been put into orbits.
The first manned space station into orbit was the Soviet station Salyut 1.
It was in 1971.
Later, in 1986, the Soviet Union launched the Mir space station.
Mir stayed in orbit until March 23, 2001.
Over that time, 104 astronauts visited the station to stay for various lengths of time.
The person who stayed the longest in space so far is Russian astronaut Valeri Polyakov.
Working as the doctor aboard the station, he lived on Mir for 438 days without returning to the earth.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the rich of New York were deeply impressed by the parks in Europe and suggested establishing a park.
The 843-acre land made of marsh and gravel, which was hard to develop as land for housing, was purchased to be designed as a park.
Full-scale construction began after kicking the poor residents out to other regions.
In the respect that the United States adopted many ideas from Europe for development, the history of Central Park is that of the United States.

Nothing in the history of science can compare with a black hole.
Thought to exist far, far out if space, black holes are said to be small sphere-shaped areas where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
This, of course, makes them invisible and is the reason they are referred to as “black.”
They're called “holes” because, as far as we know, they seem to be bottomless pits which can suck in everything from tiny dust particles to stars many times larger than our sun, all of which disappear without a trace.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history.
As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell.
Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River.
As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats ― Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat ― were disclosed!
In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them.
By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

Writing is one of the greatest inventions in human history.
It helps us to store large amounts of knowledge and to hand them down to future generations in a clear and organized form.
Without it we would know very little about how our ancestors lived.
We would be completely shut off from the great people of the past.
In modern times some means of recording sounds and carrying speech a long way have been invented.
Take, for example, the tape recorder and the telephone.
As a result, it may now be regarded as much less important than before.

This discovery changed human history.
People were able to travel faster and farther with horses.
They were able to leave their own land.
Many people went to distant lands, met new people, and saw new places.
They taught other people how to use horses.
Then, about 3,500 years ago, people in Mesopotamia began to use horses to help them win wars against their enemies.
They drove chariots, or carts, pulled by two or more horses.
It was impossible for an enemy on foot to fight against a soldier in a chariot.
As a result, armies with horses and chariots were very powerful.

According to their cultures, people have pierced and decorated their bodies throughout history.
Ear piercing has been popular in Europe since the eighteenth century,
when rich women wore diamonds in their ears to show their wealth.
People in India have been piercing their noses for a long time.
Group members in America often show that they belong by piercing certain body parts.
And some cultures have considered it beautiful to push needles through their skin.

Some history researchers suggest Marco Polo never actually visited China.
Why do they say that?
First, they ask why he didn't write about the Great Wall.
It's hard to miss!
Then, they point out he also failed to mention Chinese tea-drinking ceremonies, a very important part of life there.
Moreover, no Chinese sources of the period mention Marco Polo, although they mention other foreigners.
Finally, some say he never traveled much farther than Turkey.
Travelers who tried to follow his route always became lost at this point.
Perhaps he copied details from guidebooks on China.

Suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, Stephen Hawking, aged 56, is unable to speak or move anything except his eyes and three fingers.
But the Cambridge University physicist, widely regarded as the greatest cosmic thinker since Albert Einstein, is attempting nothing less than “a complete understanding of the universe.”
No one, however, has dared accuse him of arrogant pride.
After all, this is the guy whose 1988 book A Brief History of Time proved the biggest unread bestseller of all time.

When I entered the ninth grade, I thought I would have to work very hard, and my teachers would be very strict.
So when the history teacher told us what we were going to study, I became confused and tired.
I stumbled into the English class, my head still spinning.

There is little doubt that early people passed family beliefs from one generation to another by telling stories.
We call this storytelling oral history because older members of families told younger members about their memories by talking about events in the past.
It is possible that some of our favorite legends began as stories thousands of years ago, but we have no written proof that this is so.
If we say that history began with writing, then history is only about 6,000 years old.
That is when the umerians in Mesopotamia began keeping records, using symbols on clay tablets.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

In the 1930s, Clive McCay, a nutritionist, discovered that rats deprived of food lived longer and looked younger than rats on a normal diet.
Since then, additional studies have shown that in animals from fruit flies to mice,
decreasing food intake by about 30 percent results in a 30 percent increase in life span.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

The extinction of each language results in the irrecoverable loss of unique cultural, historical and ecological knowledge.
Each language is a unique expression of the human experience of the world.
Every time a language dies, we have less evidence for understanding patterns in the structure and function of human language, human prehistory, and the maintenance of the world's diverse ecosystems.
Above all, speakers of these languages may experience the loss of their language as a loss of their original ethnic and cultural identity.

Even before the Romans took Greek statues away, art was treated as war booty.
Throughout European history, art works regularly changed hands through armed conflict or political domination.
And from the 19th century, the Europeans began bringing Asian, African and Latin American treasures into their museums
―to save them, it was claimed, from destruction.
Increasingly, however, “victim” countries are refusing to view history as a closed book.
For instance, Greece has long demanded the return of the Elgin Marbles, the 253 sculptures from the Parthenon that are in the British Museum.

In 1876, Japanese government ordered each province to send its own map in order to make a modern map of Japan.
Shimane inquired whether it should include Ulleungdo and Dokdo in the East Sea.
Japan's Department of the Interior conducted an investigation for five months and confirmed that Ulleungdo and Dokdo belonged to Joseon.
However, considering the importance of the matter, the Department of the Interior decided to leave the final decision to the Prime Minister.
Reviewing its consultation, he reconfirmed that those islands belonged to Joseon and then sent an official order that the province delete the two islands from its map.
These historical facts further prove that Dokdo belongs to Korea.

The question which comes first―society or the individual―is like the question about the hen and the egg.
Whether you treat it as a logical or a historical question, you can make no statement about it, one way or the other, which does not have to be corrected by an opposite, and equally one-sided, statement.
Society and the individual are inseparable; they are necessary and complementary to each other, not opposites.
'No man is an island, entire of itself,' in Donne's famous words: 'every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.'
That is an aspect of the truth.

Every human being at every stage of history or pre-history is born into a society and from his earliest years is moulded by that society.
The language which he speaks is not an individual inheritance, but a social acquisition from the group in which he grows up.

Every part of history is closely connected with every other part and melts imperceptibly into it; and no part of it would be quite as it is if it were not for the parts that went before.
No period in history can ever be considered quite separately, however different it may be from those that precede it.

The relationship of biography and history is clear.
We cannot understand the life of a man without having knowledge of the world in which he lived and the great events of his time.
For this information, the biographer will often turn to the historian to provide a detailed setting for the biographical study.

History is supposed to provide a knowledge of the longer context within which our lives take place.
History is not just the evolution of technology; it is the evolution of thought.
By understanding the reality of the people who came before us, we can see why we look at the world the way we do, and what our contribution is toward further progress.
We can pinpoint where we come in, so to speak, in the longer development of Civilization, and that gives us a sense of where we are going.

Wool is one of the oldest kinds of material used for clothing.
We do not know exactly when people started to use wool to make clothing.
However, we do know that people were wearing wool clothes very early in man's history.
People used the wool not only from sheep, but also from other animals.
For example, in the desert they used the wool from camels.
In the mountains of India they used the wool from cashmere goats.
And in mountains of South America, they used the wool from the llama.
All these kinds of wool have one thing in common.
They protect the body from outside changes in temperature.
This way, wool keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter.

Between historical events and the historian there is a constant interplay.
The historian tries to impose on these events some kind of rational pattern: how they happened and even why they happened.
No historian starts with a blank mind as a jury is supposed to do.
He does not go to documents with a childlike innocence of mind and wait patiently until they dictate conclusions to him.
Quite the contrary.

In more modern history, candidates have allied themselves with political parties.
Once a voter knows and favors the views of a certain political party, he may vote for anyone with that party's label.
Nevertheless, divisions of opinion develop, so that today there is a wide range of candidate views in any major party.

Though motion pictures (or movies, as they are usually called in the United
States) are just a little over fifty years old, they have grown to be the most
popular and widespread form of entertainment in the world.

Conquering sickness and poverty, Madame Curie made one of the most
magnificent discoveries of all time, the discovery of radium.

Possibly for the first time, a soccer match has been delayed by laughter.
Five thousand Athenian soccer fans, awaiting the start of an exhibition match
between a Greek team and a Chinese team last year, rose and stood in respectful
silence as what they took to be the Chinese national anthem reverberated from
the stadium's loudspeakers. The Chinese team on the field, observing all those
standing Greeks, also came to polite attention, assuming that the Greek anthem
was being played.
Then a lilting female voice rose above the unfamiliar music - to extol the
virtues of a local toothpaste.

Thoughout his long career as one of America's best-known novelists, Dos Passos
has remained true to his belief that a writer is an architect of history. Convinced that
tomorrow's problems can best be solved by searching the past, he has dedicated his life
to accurately portraying the sights and sounds of the world around him for
future generations
to see and understand. As a portrait of 20th-century America, Dos Passos' novels are
unsurpassed.

Thus the evidence is accumulating that history may be about to repeat itself.

Accident has a disconcerting way of making new history.

The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife, this
longing to merge his double self into a better and true self.
In this merging he wishes neither of the older selves to be lost.
He would not Africanize America, for America has too much to teach the world
and Africa.
He would not bleach his Negro soul in a flood of white Americanism, for he
knows that Negro blood has a message for the world.
He simply wished to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and
an Amercan, without being cursed and spat upon by his fellows, without
having the doors of opportunity closed roughly in his face.

We know very little about Shakespeare, because, in his days, historical stories
were devoted to the lives of kings. It was beyond imagining that a common actor
would be of interest in the future. Similarly in Scott Joplin's lifetime, it
never occurred to anyone that history would want to know what a songwriter
- especially a black one - was like.

A certain historian has said of history that "it devours the present." I do not quite
understand what he means, but in science it is surely the other way about: the present
devours the past. This does something to extenuate a scientist's misguided
indifference to the history of ideas.

As individuals, we find that our development depends upon the people whom we
meet in the course of our lives. (These people include the authors whose books we
read, and characters in works of fiction and history.)

Their cultures had developed in the course of a history of extreme, and extremely
sub-divided regionalism: the attempt to teach Germans to think of themselves as
Germans first, and the attempt to teach Italians to think of themselves as Italians
first, rather than as natives of a particular small principality or city, was to
disturb the traditional culture from which alone any future culture could grow.

In order to enjoy the detachment and to exercise the reason of a Hume or
a Gibbon, two things, besides intelligence, are required: self-knowledge and a
sense of humor. One must neither deceive oneself nor take oneself too seriously.

Some writers are only of historical interest. Their message may have
stirred men in their own time, but they do not move us today. Truly great
authors are those whose message speaks not only to their contemporaries but
also to succeeding generations.

Most histories in totalitarian countries are nationalistic, patriotic, sentimental, and
preoccupied with the national ego and the delusion of the particular country's
complete superiority.

But democracy is usually a tumultuous and unseemly affair, especially when men
feel strongly about vital issues. Probably since the first popular assembly convened
there have been presiding officers who turned a deaf ear to delegates they did not
like. Rival factions have always tried to pack the galleries and to shout down their
opponents. To take note of these historical facts is not to condone them. An unending
effort has to be made to create procedural sefeguards strong enough to curb the
ineradicable human impulse to unfairness. But critics should not pretend they were
born yesterday and are innocent of any knowledge of pressure tactics in politics.

That bit of history has some truth, but, as always, one bit is an imperfect
guide for other times.

소설의 역사적 환경 the historical milieu of a novel

It is common in our day, as it has been in many other periods of the
world's history, to suppose that those among us who are wise have seen
through all the enthusiasms of earlier times and have become aware
that there is nothing left to live for.
The men who hold this view are genuinely unhappy, but they are proud of
their unhappiness, which they attribute to the nature of the universe
and consider to be the only rational attitude for an enlightened man.

In France a man who has ruined himself for women is generally regarded
with sympathy and admiration; there is a feeling that it was worth while,
and the man who has done it feels even a certain pride in the fact;
in England he will be thought and will think himself a damned fool.
That is why Anthony and Cleopatra has always been the least popular of
Shakespeare's greater plays.
Audiences have felt that it was contemptible to throw away an empire
for a woman's sake.
Indeed if it were not founded on an accepted legend, they would be
unanimous in asserting that such a thing is incredible.

grow. Today a little more land may belong to the sea, tomorrow a little
less.
