One mid-July day I visited Inner Mongolia.
There were endless fields of wild flowers.
Of 1,000 species of wild flowers, 500 herbs are used to make Chinese medicines.
About 80% of all Chinese herbal medicines are from this area.
We stayed in a Mongolian tent.
The grassland around the tent was a sea of forget-me-nots, though different from the ones I know in Korea.
Their leaves and stems seem lean and weak, yet are as hard as wires.
This is to protect them from the long, dry, cold, and windy winter, and to help them to survive through to the spring.

The giant panda bear is a favorite of children and animal lovers throughout the world.
Though so well known and loved, the panda is slowly dying out.
At present, there are only about 1,230 wild pandas left in the world.
They all live in China.
Pandas used to be common in other areas.
However, as the human population increased and the forests shrank, panda territory gradually disappeared.
And so did tile panda.
Now the Chinese government has created a number of “panda reserves” to protect pandas.
Within these reserves, human settlement and tree cutting will be limited.

All of the wild Giant Pandas in the world live in western China.
They are found in dense bamboo forests high up in the mountains.
The forests are so dense that it has always been hard for people to find out much about wild pandas.
The pandas stay hidden in the forest most of the time, where people can't even see them.
In many ways, the Giant Panda is still a mysterious animal.
Nobody is really sure what kind of animal they are.
Some scientists say that the Giant Panda is a member of the raccoon family.
But others claim that it belongs to the bear family.
And a third group is sure that it doesn't belong to either family.

Scientists believe that elephants become alcoholics for the same reason some people do.
They want to forget their everyday lives and problems, and getting drunk allows them to do that, at least for a short time.
The scientists have found that if elephants are put in stressful situations, they will consume a lot more alcohol than usual.
Sadly, these stressful situations are becoming more and more common in the wild.
As elephants face overcrowding, caused by the destruction of their habitat,
increasing numbers of them are turning to alcohol as the answer.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive.
Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs.
Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals.
Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass.
Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

Although there are thousands of species of wild animals, surprisingly few species have been domesticated.
The reason is that it takes special qualities to make animals suitable for domestication.
They must be strong enough to withstand removal from their mother at an early age.
They must breed freely in captivity and be easy to look after.
Domestic or farm animals must be able to develop a liking for man, enjoy comfort, and accept confinement and control.
And, of course, they must be useful: primarily as a source of food,
but also in the provision of wool or hide for clothing and sometimes as a means of transport or pulling power.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

In most parts of the world, rabbits have long been valued for their meat and pelts.
Europe has had wild rabbits since the Ice Ages.
During the twelfth century, Norman invaders brought European rabbits to England, where the rabbits flourished.
Australia had no rabbits until 1859.
Then, an Australian landowner had twenty-four European rabbits sent to him from England.
The rabbits multiplied.
Four years later, the landowner said that he had killed about 20,000 of them for their meat and pelts.
By 1930, the remaining rabbits had multiplied so fast that millions of them had spread over most of Australia.

The domestication of the wolf is by no means so difficult as is usually supposed,
especially in the case of the American species. There is, however, one striking
difference between the modern dog and his wild cousins.

Recent research has amply demonstrated that many caged animals are
in fact facing a survival problem as severe as that of their cousins
in the wild - a struggle to survive, simply, against the monotony of
their environment.

*bandit 산적; 비적 an armed robber, especially one of an armed band who attack travelers in wild places

There is always a quiet time in forests all over the world.
While only some people take a short sleep after the midday meal, there is
a tendency on the part of almost every wild creature to stop what it is
doing and rest in the afternoon.
Usually between the hours of one and three o'clock almost no wildlife is
moving.
If you are hunting for game then, you may as well put your gun down
and take a nap.
If you are freshwater fishing, the same thing generally holds true.
Maybe this instinct to rest is nature's way of preventing heart failure
among creatures.

Wild Palms : This five-episode series, premiering on ABC, is a slice of paranoiacs' heaven.
Co-executive producer and conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone has found a soul mate in writer Bruce Wagner, whose novel Force Majeure sketched the downward spiral of an alienated Hollywood screenwriter.
Wagner sets his Wild Palms, based on his magazine comic strip of the same name, fifteen tears in the future, in a postdepression Los Angeles that's far creepier than Twin Peaks.

Goats like eating weeds. In fact, they prefer weeds to grass. So they
are very useful for controlling weeds without using chemicals. The
digestive system of the goat is different from that of the sheep or the
cow. Weed seeds cannot pass through the goat's body, and so they cannot
grow into new weeds. Farmers don't like using chemicals to control weeds
because such poisons can kill wild animals or even pets, like dogs. A
company in Montana even rents out goats to eat weeds.

Brigid Gill was alone in her cottage waiting for her little son to
come from school. He was now an hour late. He was only nine and he was
her only child. He was a wild boy, always getting into mischief. She kept
telling herself that she would scold him when he came in. At the same
time her heart was thumping and she started at every sound, rushing out
to the door and looking down the winding road, which was now dim with the
shadows of evening.
Brigid Bill

But clean air is not the only reason. People can set up a tent in the
middle of the smell of wild flowers and trees. They can enjoy being alone
in the mountains, forgetting completely about the everyday cares of the
world. They are entirely free to talk among themselves, occasionally
entertained by the sweet sounds of trees and small animals. They don't
have to be bothered by noisy crowds that disturb their peace of mind.
These are other reasons why people like to go to the mountains.

The Girl With April In Her Eyes
Chris De Burgh
There once was a king who called for the spring
For his world was still covered in snow
But the spring had not been for he was wicked and mean
In his winter fields nothing would grow
And when a traveller called seeking help at the door
Only food and a bed for the night
He ordered his slave to turn her away
The girl with April in her eyes
-
Oh~~oh~ on and on she goes
Through the winter's night the wild wind and the snow
Ah~~ah~ on and on she rides
Someone help the girl with April in her eyes
-
She rode through the night till she came to the light
Of a humble man's home in the woods
He brought her inside by the fire light she died
And he buried her gently and good
Oh the morning was bright all the world snow white
But when he came to the place where she lay
His field was ablaze with flowers on the grave
Of the girl with April in her eyes

Mr.Big
Now that I lost everything to you
You say you want to start something new
And it's breaking my heart you're leaving
Baby I'm grieving
-
But if you wanna leave take good care
Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of things turn bad out there
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child girl
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breaking my heart in two
Cause I never wanna see you sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
-
But if you wanna leave take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child girl
-
Baby I love you, but if you wanna leave take good care
Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware
Oh baby baby it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh baby baby it's a wild world

One summer night
Chelsia Chan & Kenny
One summer night
The stars were shining bright
One summer dream made with fancy whims
That summer night
My whole world tumbled down
I would have died if not for you
-
Set me free
Like the sparrows up the tree
Give a sign
So I would ease my mind
Just say a word
And I'll come running wild
Give me a chance to live again
-
Chorus:
Each night I'd pray fot you
My heart would cry for you
The sun won't shine again
Since you have gone
Each time I'd think of you
My heart would beat for you
You are the one the for me

Another important role many alders play in the wild, particularly in
mountainous areas, is to check the rush of water during spring melt. In
Japan and elsewhere, the trees are planted to stabilize soil on steep
mountain slopes. Similarly, alders have been planted to stabilize and
rehabilitate waste material left over from old mines, flood deposits,
and landslide areas in both Europe and Asia.

Many people think the Canary Islands were named for the canary birds
that live there. This is not true. The word canary comes from the Latin
word canis, meaning dog. Early explorers of the island found many wild
dogs there. They named the islands "Canario," meaning "Isle of Dogs." So
the Canary Islands were not named for the canary birds, but the birds
were named for the islands !

Here nature stages one of her greatest dramas -
Every year three million caribou migrate across the Arctic tundra.
The immensity of the herd can only be properly appreciated from the air.
Some herds travel over 2,000 miles a year in search of fresh pastures.

Surprisingly, snow here never melts.
The air is just too cold and too dry for it to do so.

There is one simple and massive cause - the Himalayas.
Clouds blowing from the south hit this gigantic barrier.

Green : What are the health problems of keeping wild animals in zoos?
Andrew : Well, there are many.
Andrew:
First of all, people still try to give food to the animals or throw things into the cages that can harm them.
They can choke on some of these things.
Besides, animals can get sick easily from contact with people.

Wild dogs live together in groups.

For example, they say, “You are more important than I am,” by lying down in front of a more important dog.
Sometimes they use some action to teach their young how to behave properly in the group.
