[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

The Apollo Theater, the Harlem landmark in New York, has been a major showcase for top black entertainers since the 1930s.
Built in 1913, it began as a comedy house where blacks weren't allowed as an audience.
But in 1920 it was offering shows that usually included Jazz and in 1932 it became a black comedy house.
It wasn't until renovations were made in the mid-1930s that the Apollo became a world-renewed place for Jazz musicians.
Recently the Apollo has been operating as a nonprofit performance center.

My literature class was talking about the implications of a scientist's statement
that a free fish can only see the struggles of a hooked fish but cannot know why it twists violent.
Noticing one student of the class wasn't paying attention, I asked him what he thought about that statement.
Without hesitation, he replied:
"Who cares what the free fish thinks?
I want to know what kind of lure was used to catch the hooked one."

A young lawyer began working in our office.
Her first trial was coming up, and she worked diligently on her case.
Several other experienced lawyers occasionally dropped in to see how she was doing and to offer help.
The day before her trial, she mentioned that she wasn't getting much sleep lately with the upcoming trial on her mind.
One of the experienced lawyers overheard and stopped to offer his support.
“Relax,” he said.
“Your case is well prepared, and you know your stuff.”
The beginning lawyer turned to him and replied with a smile,
“I'm not worried about my case - I'm worried about what to wear.”

When I was growing up, television wasn't encouraged ― but I was permitted to watch return of “I love Lucy.”
And did I ever love her!
When I was six, I asked my father, a minister in San Diego, to arrange a meeting with my idol.
He tried reasoning with me, but I didn't listen.
Papa paused, looked me straight in the eye and said, “I want you to be real.”
Over the years Papa's words became increasingly important to me.
Being ‘real' meant knowing who I was, being true to myself, and standing up for my beliefs.
그러나 나는 “I love Lucy.”

This is a wonderful invention.
No one knows who invented it or when it happened.
A Swiss described it in a book in 1565.
He said it was a piece of wood with lead (Pb) inside it.
It wasn't popular at that time.
Then in 1795 someone started making it from graphite and it became very popular.
Graphite is a kind of coal.
Today people make it in the same way.
They grind the graphite, make it into the shape of a stick, and bake it.
Then they put it inside a piece of wood.
It can write 50,000 English words or make a line 55 kilometers long.

After Germany and Austria lost World War Ⅰ, inflation ruined their economies.
The governments printed huge quantities of paper money.
Naturally, the more they issued, the more worthless it became.
By 1922, the money wasn't even worth the paper on which it was printed.
A clever Swiss soap maker bought up all the Austrian money that he could find.
He realized that it was just the right size needed to wrap his soap.
He printed the name of the soap on the blank side.
Then, he put his money-wrapped soap on the market and waited.
Just as he had hoped, his soap sales escalated.
Many buyers bought the soap, hoping that someday the “wrappers” would be worth just as much as they were before the war.

Michael Jordan wasn't born a star.
He had natural talent, but a part of his success was a result of his parents' support.
Michael's parents taught their children that all races are equal.
But at the age of seven, Michael was put to the test.
A white girl told him to give up his seat at the front of a bus.
When he refused, she called him a “nigger.”
In anger, he hit her, and was suspended from school.
He learned to overcome obstacles such as this with his mother's wisdom.
His mother repeated what she often said, “Outside this door, all sorts of things will happen.
Don't let it affect you.
If people call you nigger, that's their ignorance.”
Michael Jordan

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

The bear hesitated but eventually agreed, thinking he would secretly eat the pies when he went into the forest.
When the bear wasn't looking, Marsha hid in the basket.
Then the bear picked up the basket and set off.
On the way, he decided to rest and eat a pie, but Marsha cried out, “I can see you! I can see you!”

She told me that I was suffering from a bad attitude.
And even after she told me, it took me a while to see she was right.
It is easy to see another person's bad attitude but difficult to admit our own.
I should have realized that it was my negative attitude that really annoyed me, not the doubled commutes.
I wasn't sleeping well at night; I felt nervous.
One's body is, after all, prone to weakness or failure when one is subjected to continued stress.
And the early signs of such problems were already beginning to show.

When the Spanish conqueror Pizarro transferred the capital of Peru from a site in the mountains 11,000 feet above sea level to lowland Lima,
it wasn't just for a change of scenery.
The Spanish conquerors observed that domestic animals taken to the mountains failed to reproduce.
And for over 50 years after the Spanish brought their wives and settled in the Andes,
no Spanish children were born in any of the higher altitudes.
The Indians, however, were fertile in the same climate.
The difference was that over the 9,000 years that the Indians had lived in the Andes,
they had developed enlarged lungs, a high red blood cell count, and lower blood pressure,
all of which made it possible for them to live normal lives at high altitudes.

When I started snow-boarding and then decided to turn professional, it wasn't really a career option.
There was little money in it, you know.
Even though I was ranked number one, I wasn't making a living at it.
So I just figured I would probably do something else.
Since I was always focused on computers,
I thought at some point that if I had to, I probably would go into web design or something.
That's probably what I would have done, if I had not beaten my first competitors.

It was a Friday afternoon, and the last bell had just rung, which meant it was time to go home for the weekend.
Everyone was excited and hurried out of school shouting goodbye and making weekend plans.
Everyone except Sharon.
Sharon envied the other boys and girls because she wished she could be just like them.
The school was almost empty of students by the time she was ready to leave.
She wasn't in any hurry to go home because she knew what to expect when she got there.
She slowly picked up her stuff and trudged home.
Sharon

My family and I lived in an apartment until last spring.
We weren't happy there because the building was crowded and noisy.
We decided to move.
Finally, my husband and I found a small house in a neighborhood that wasn't bad.
The problem was the house itself.
The wallpaper was horrible; there were scenes of hunting all over the bedroom walls!
The porch and roof needed repairs.
The garden consisted of weeds, and a few half-dead plants with insects all over them.
When our kids first saw their new home, they burst into tears.
I understood that.
I wanted to cry, too.

I remember Anne.
She wasn't the best player on the women's soccer team.
For one thing, she was too short.
Some of the rest of the team members were taller, and they could run faster and kick harder.

Still in the dark, he reached for the lamp that was on the table to the left of the door, but it wasn't there.
Then Adams' foot hit something on the floor.
Adams turned back to the door and moved his hand over the wall until he found the light switch.
He flipped it up.
When he looked around the room, his eyes and mouth opened wide.
Adams couldn't believe his eyes.
Adams

The train's conductor, an African American, started a conversation.
This was the era of Civil Rights, Kent State and the Vietnam War.
He was highly intelligent and well-informed.
When it began to get dark, he stopped by to remind me that the dining car was closing "in case you want to eat."
I said I wasn't hungry, which was not true.

An eclipse used to be a losing proposition: entire populations, surprised by the sudden darkness, would lose their cool; pregnant women feared that they would lose their babies; court astrologers who had failed to predict the celestial occurrence would lose their heads.
And then scientists discovered that an angry sky god wasn't erasing the sun: eclipse could be forecast.

Tribute to Dad
A few days ago, my best friend died.
He was my teacher, my idol, my symbol of strength and protection.
He was also my father.
Last year on my 17th birthday, I obtained my driver's license.
Three weeks later, I had a minor accident.
I was scared to death of what my father would say when the police called him.
I wasn't hurt, but I had a few scratches and was dazed by the impact.

I didn't want to be tied up in line, nor did I want to see her embarrassed, so I placed two singles on the counter.
The elderly lady said I couldn't do that, and the clerk told me the same thing.
I said I wasn't going to take the money back and she was just going to have to accept it.

One evening, my sister-in-law's family decided that they would fly the American flag
every day instead of just on special days. The next morning they carried out
that decision.
Soon after the flag was placed in the bracket on the porch, there was a knock on the
front
door. When my sister-in-law answered it, she found the mailman standing there. Pointing
to the flag, he asked, "Why is the flag flying today?"
After listening to the explanation, the mailman walked away saying, "Thanks. I just
wanted to make sure I wasn't working on my day off."

He'd annoy me, and I went down the stairs to my mailbox, simply to walk off
my annoyance. I wasn't eager to see the mail.

The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the
house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now,
Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me."
"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy."
"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

The dance at the local social club was in full swing as a couple who had
just met chatted with each other. The conversation inevitably turned to
their former marriages.
"I lost my husband at sea," said the woman.
"I'm so sorry," replied the man. "How did happen? Was he swimming?"
"Oh, it wasn't like that," she answered. "I lost him to a redhead on a
cruise ship."

I was worried that my work wasn't good enough, but the teacher reassured me.

When I telephoned my sister's house from my office, her teen-age son
informed me she wasn't home. I knew from past experience that leaving
a message to return my call would be futile. "Do me a favor, Eric,"
I said. "Move the tea kettle from the stove to the coffee table.
When your mother asks what it's doing there, tell her I told you to do
it and she should call me to find out why."
Later on I had to leave the office, and I returned to find my wastebasket
perched on top of my desk. "Why is this here?" I asked the secretary.
"Your sister returned your call," she replied.

*later on 나중에 afterwards:
It wasn't until later on that we realized she'd gone.

After my release from the U.S. Navy, I answered a newspaper ad for a
forklift-operator at a soft-drink bottling company. I was taken on a
tour of the plant by the warehouse foreman, who stressed how important
it was not to break any bottles.
"In the Navy," I explained, "I wasn't allowed any mistakes with the forklift."
"What did you handle?" he asked.
"Bombs," I replied.
"Son," he said, "you're hired!"

As a real-estate agent, I had spent six months showing homes to one
young couple. At last I found two that they liked, but they couldn't
decide which to buy. The wife and I returned to the second house, and
she began wandering about for another look while I waited upstairs.
Eventually she told me they would take the first home.
I asked how she had made her decision. "I was standing in the family
room," the woman explained, "and I asked God to give me a sign. Right
then and there, a plane came zooming over on its flight path to the
airport, and I knew that wasn't the house for us."

It was my first job, and I was determined to be a terrific waitress.
I would serve my customers efficiently and cheerfully, as I would like
to be treated.
The restaurant wasn't busy, and I was able to give the couple seated
at my table my complete attention. We chatted amiably as I took their
order, and I soon served them their meal. Then I stood across the room,
delighted when they waved at me. I waved back.
We kept up this friendly interchange until the man got up and came over.
"Would you bring us some silverware?" he asked.

Trying to cut down on expenses, I decided to bring my own lunch to work.
Unfortunately, I kept forgetting my sandwiches in my morning rush.
One night I left myself a note near the front door.
Next morning I spotted the message and went to the refrigerator, but
my lunch wasn't there. I retraced my steps and took a closer look at
the note. Underneath "Don't forget your lunch," my roommate had
scrawled, "Thanks!"

I owe you thirty dollars more, don't I?

That' right. Thank you.

Sorry about that! It was my mistake. I just wasn't thinking.

It wasn't my mistake.

She wasn't surprised -- disappointed, but not surprised. The priorities
were well known : male students first, regardless of academic status, and
then if there were enough money left, it would go to advanced female
students. Education for male is practical but for females it is
luxurious. It is the males, after all, who are destined to hold jobs that
require learning; the females -- well, a measure of common sense is
sufficient for bringing up children.

There were no PC game rooms where kids could hang out or get into trouble.
The only way to contact people was through the telephone, so keeping in touch with friends wasn't as easy as it is today.

If this wasn't moving, you might think it was a shell or a rock. In fact it's an octopus.

About an hour later, he woke up suddenly in the middle of a dream.
In his dream, he was in a crowded tunnel.
People were pushing him from all directions, and pulling at his clothes.
As he woke up, he realized that it wasn't only a dream― somebody was really pulling at his coat pocket.
He opened his eyes to catch sight of a man slipping out of the *compartment.
His hand went to his pocket―his wallet was missing!

Who wasn't invited to the wedding.

That wasn't a real date?!

Oh, like I wasn't dreading tomorrow enough, having
to give it back to him...

Hey, hey, hey, her stuff wasn't in it.

I'm sorry, you know, maybe I wasn't being clear. Uh, this is our cart.

C'mon, you guys, it wasn't that bad. It was better than that thing I did with the trolls, at least you got to see my head.

That is so unfair!
Oh c'mon! When we were kids, yours was the only Raggedy Ann doll that wasn't raggedy!
Okay, so I'm responsible, I'm organised. But hey, I can be a kook.
Alright, you madcap gal.

Maybe this wasn't your shot.

Although, uh, y'know, back in college, Susan Sallidor did.
You're kidding! Did you tell her I wasn't?
No.
아니.
No, it's just 'cause, uh, I kinda wanted to go out with her too, so I told her, actually, you were seeing Bernie Spellman...
who also liked her, so...
Well, this is fascinating. So, uh, what is it about me?
I dunno, 'cause you're smart, you're funny...
Ross is smart and funny, d'you ever think that about him?
WHAT IS IT?!
Okay, I-I d'know, you-you just- you have a quality.
Yes. Absolutely. A quality.
Oh, oh, a quality, good, because I was worried you guys were gonna be vague about this.

If it wasn't for you and your stupid balloon, I would be on a plane watching a woman do this right now. But I'm not.

Yeah, we played, we watched TV.. that juggling thing is amazing.
What, uh... what juggling thing?
With the balled-up socks? I figured you taught him that.
No.
아니
Y'know, it wasn't that big a deal. He just balled up socks... and a melon...

Nothing, I just thought I'd stop by.. y'know, after the uh... that I.. y'know, so what are you doing here?
I'm not really here. Just thought I'd drop these off...on the way.. my way... Do you come here a lot? Without me?
No. No! No! ...So, um, do you think he's doing any better than he was this morning?
How would I know? I-I wasn't here.
Really? Not even to, um, change his PAJAMAS?!

I wasn't- I mean, I-

You mean that?
Yeah, why not. So I told her.
Yeah? How'd it go?
Awful. Awful. Couldn'ta gone worse.
Well, howdya feel?
Pretty good! I told her.
Well, see? So, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea, y'know, me kissing your mom, uh? Huh? But.. we don't have to go down that road.
Okay. Now this is just the first chapter, and I want your absolute honest opinion. Oh, oh, and on page two, he's not 'reaching for her heaving beasts'.
What's a 'niffle'?
You usually find them on the 'heaving beasts'.
Alright, alright, so I'm not a great typist...
Wait, did you get to the part about his 'huge throbbing pens'? Tell ya, you don't wanna be around when he starts writing with those!

Wasn't this supposed to be just a fling, huh? Shouldn't it be...flung by now?
I mean, we are way past the fling thing, I mean, I am feeling things that I've only read about in Danielle Steele books, you know?
I mean, when I'm with him, I'm totally, totally...
...nauseous, I'm physically nauseous. What am I supposed to do, huh? Call immigration?
I could call immigration!

No, it's only been six years.
I just wanted to put a nice memory in your head so you'd know that I wasn't always such a terrible guy. Joe. Y'ever been in love?
...I d'know.
Then y'haven't.
You're burning your tomatoes.
You're one to talk.

Nonono, thatthat's not what I was saying
Y'know, all these years, I thought you were on my side.
But maybe what you were doing was sucking up to Mom and Dad so they'd keep liking you better!
Hey, I married a lesbian to make you look good!
You're right!
