typist는 typewriter는 사용하는 사람이고 ‘타자하다’의 typewrite는 지금은 폐어가 되어 대신 type가 쓰이며, 이것은 구어적인 말이 아니고 표준영어이다. 또한 영국에서는 지금도 typist는 활자를 사용하는 사람, 즉 ‘식자공’(compositor)이라는 옛 뜻으로 쓰이고 있다.
