Finding evidence doesn't always mean a criminal will be convicted.
Proving that a person is guilty or innocent of a crime is the job of lawyers.
One of the most famous lawyers of all time was Clarence Darrow.
Darrow was very famous in America around the start of the twentieth century.
He often defended people who were thought to be guilty and took on many unpopular cases.
In particular, he defended poor people who usually would not be able to afford a good lawyer.
During trials, he was a great speaker and argued very well.
He won many cases, even when the evidence was against him.

The story of the Titanic and her first, and only, voyage has fascinated people ever since it happened.
The movie director, James Cameron, is one of these people.
Using late-twentieth-century technology and a team of thousands, he brought the great ship to life on the big screen.
The model was tilted by huge machines to show how the ship went down.
Just before the Titanic sank, the front of the ship went under the water, causing the back to stand up almost vertically.

Although the Chinese tried to ignore or resist the foreign traders, two factors worked against them.
The central government in China was weak, and the Europeans had superior weapons and ships.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Chinese were unable to stop foreign interests from influencing their country.

The rapid technological advances of the twentieth century have been bought at
the expense of an alarming depletion of our natural resources.

I would appreciate it if you could somehow arrange to meet me
on the afternoon of either the nineteenth or the twentieth.
Please let me know if this is possible.

In late eighteenth- century England, population growth and
technological advances happened together and helped each other along. The
increased population brought more demand for food, and more money went
into farming. Industrialization increased wealth, and that in turn led to
more cloth and other goods. Thus, more demand was met by more supply, and
more people did not mean a lower level of life. In the twentieth century,
however, that is no longer true, as will be seen below.

Just inside the walls of Florence stands a factory where silk is handwoven on machines that date back to the fifteenth century.
The factory, successful at the height of silk production in the eighteenth century, was almost unknown in the twentieth century until it was rescued about seven years ago by the Marchese Pucci, whose name has for so long been associated with beautiful and luxurious silks.
Once again the factory is producing some of the most beautiful and expensive handwoven silks in the world.

With the turn-of-the-century Crafts movement and the discovery of
nontraditional sources of inspiration, such as wooden African figures
and masks, there arose a new urge for hands-on, personal execution of
art and an interaction with the medium. Even as early as the 1880's and
1890's, nonconformist European artists were attempting direct carving.
By the second decade of the twentieth century, Americans ― Laurent and
Zorach most notably ― had adopted it as their primary means of working.
Laurent

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions
not only possible but pleasant and convivial. The growing custom of
regularly assembling from afar the representatives of all kinds of
groups ― not only for political conventions, but also for commercial,
professional, learned, and avocational ones ― in turn supported the
multiplying hotels. By mid-twentieth century, conventions accounted for
over a third of the yearly room occupancy of all hotels in the nation;
about eighteen thousand different conventions were held annually with a
total attendance of about ten million persons.

In the twentieth century, electron microscopes have provided direct
views of viruses and minuscule surface structures. Now another type of
microscope, one that utilizes x-rays rather than light or electrons,
offers a different way of examining tiny details; it should extend human
perception still farther into the natural world.
X선을 사용하는 현미경이 작은 미세 부분을 검사하는 다른 방식을 제공한다 ;

Margaret Bourke-White, one of the most prolific photojournalists of the
twentieth century, was a witness to world events from the 1920's through the
1950's. During her student days Bourke-White made a photographic record of
campus life. her career blossomed at a time when the American art world had
embraced Modernism and found a new beauty in technology.

Although the three currents which have been discussed so far in
twentieth-century painting may be found in sculpture as well, the parallelism
should not be overstressed. Whereas painting has been richer and more
adventurous, its leadership as an art form has not remained unchallenged, and
sculpture has often followed different paths.
