Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

→ 「그러는 것이 ~을 덜게된다」는 그 앞의 내용을 it로 받아서 Then it will save~의 구문이 자연스럽다.「처음」은 for the first time.
→ 「누군가의 안내를 받다」는 have someone show you around 혹은 ask somebody to take you around.「시간과 노력」을 고지식하게 옮기면 time and energy이지만, time and trouble도 있다.
Will you go to the shop for me? It'll save me a trip.
(ANS 1) If you are going to London for the first time, you'd better have someone show you around the city. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble.
(ANS 2) If this is your first time to go to London, you'd better ask somebody to show you around the city. You can save a lot of time and energy that way.
(ANS 3) If this is your first visit to London you'd better get someone to guide you around the city. Then you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

→ 혼자 여행을 하다: travel alone; travel without a companion
(ANS 1) Though the old proverb says, "Pleasant company shortens the miles," we sometimes wish to travel all by ourselves.
(ANS 2) We know the old saying, "Good company makes short miles." For all that we sometimes feel like going for a trip without a companion.

[比較] accompany, attend, escort
His wife accompanied him on his trip to London./ He attended her to the concert./ May I escort you to your car?

[比較] journey, voyage, trip, travel, tour
a trip to Europe/ a vacation trip/ a bus trip
We went on a guided tour round the castle.
Rumours travel like lightening.

[比較] plan, design, project, scheme
ex) make plans for a trip to Europe/ What are your plans for today?
ex) plan a garden
ex) It was his design to separate us.
ex) He introduced a project for slum clearance.
ex) a scheme to embezzle the funds(자금을 횡령하려는 음모)

(X) I had a nice travel.
(O) I had a nice trip.

ex) I tripped over something.

To discourage Koreans from making foreign trips, the government
plans to collect this ``tourism fund fee,'' which is really an overseas

Currently, funds for tourism promotion are raised only from casinos. The
implication is that the government is classifying outbound Korean
tourists with casino gamblers.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.

Just that morning when she woke up in her own bed she thought, “Another hot, humid, dull day, just like every other day this summer.”
But then she remembered! Today was different.
Her favorite aunt and uncle, Melissa and Sean, had invited her to join them on a backpacking trip.
They picked her up at 8:00 A.M. and drove most of the day to get to the national park.
They just had time to pitch their tents, build the fire, and cook dinner before it got dark.
Emily went into the forest to gather firewood.
Then she helped Melissa make hamburger patties.
She didn't realize how hungry she was until she smelled them cooking.
Everything tasted better.
Emily

Jack arrived home from work one sunny afternoon.
He noticed a letter on the hall table.
He picked up the letter and opened it.
The letter began:
“Dear Jack, Congratulations! You have won an all-expenses-paid 5-day trip to Fiji!
Thank you for entering the competition at Franklin’s Supermarket at Downtown Shopping Center.”
He couldn't believe how lucky he was.
He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of champagne.
He sat back in the sofa and sipped on his glass of champagne.
Then he noticed the date of the trip―March 20th.
Jack screamed with horror.
“I can't believe it! I'm going to kill the mail carrier! They're always late!”
Today was March 21st.
Jack
Jack

On the surface, e-commerce appears to offer a big environmental bonus by eliminating hundreds of thousands of trips to the shopping mall.
A closer look, however, reveals that e-commerce may not be so friendly to the environment.
On-line book shopping, for example, may reduce energy use by less frequent visits to bookstores, but this actually creates more serious problems.
Every book ordered on the Web is heavily packaged and travels on a transportation network.
Instead of shipping, say, 10 copies of “Harry Potter” in one box to a bookstore, 10 boxes with one copy are shipped to e-commerce customers.
After all, this method requires more plastic bags which take a long time to decay.

What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

Millions of live cows, pigs, sheep, goats and horses are transported across long distances within the European Community each year.
In many cases the animals are so densely packed into trucks that some are trampled to death or suffocated, or sometimes they are so loosely loaded that they are painfully thrown about.
Often they must endure trips of more than 24 hours before being fed and watered.
Such conditions horrify many Britons, who are among the world's most vigorous defenders of animal welfare.

A day of apple picking is, in fact, a popular way to spend a fall day in New England.
From Connecticut to Maine, it is generally possible to find an orchard within an hour's drive and the trip is well worth the time.

He fared well on his trip.

The trip can easily end in tragedy, as happened when a rickety 30-ft.
sailboat carrying 63 Haitians was swamped in the Florida surf last month,
claiming the lives of 33.

My husband and I first met while we were theachers in Idaho. We planned to be
married during spring vacation in my hometown in New Mexico. Since we had such
a long distance to drive, we wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools asking
if we might be granted two days of personal leave in order to make the trip. The
superintendent replied that the school board, in determining valid reasons for
personal leave, did not include getting married. Since there was no such provision,
he went on, he would grant us the two days as medical leave - on the premise that
we were both clearly suffering form lovesickness!

Although most honey bees are industrious, some are like humans and take a

The journal of their extraordinary trip of eight thousand miles,

On a plane trip, I took along my 18-old son, Jonathan. As a business
traveler, I understood the grimacing faces I saw as we boarded the
7 a.m. flight. I vowed that my son wouldn't create a disturbance.
I read to him, played games and constantly kept him occupied.
When the flight was almost over and I had just congratulated myself
that Jonathan hadn't cried once, one businessman turned to me and
said, "Your son has been great, but you are driving me out of my mind."

A fiery diplomat was the survivor of a dozen duels of honor.
For one of them he had to journey to a country town some distance from Paris.
He and his adversary arrived at the railroad station simultaneously.
The adversary bought a round-trip ticket; the diplomat asked only for
a one-way tab.
"You haven't very much confidence in yourself," said the adversary
with a sneer.
"On the contrary," replied the diplomat. "I always use my opponent's
return ticket after a duel."

While on an auto trip we stopped for lunch at a crowded cafe. A man,
whom the waitress apparently knew, walked in and sat in a booth where
the dirty dishes had not been removed. Upon seeing him, the waitress
shouted, "You would have to take the one table that hasn't been
cleared!"
Replied the man, "I just wanted to feel at home."

A fellow went on a business trip with his boss, the cheapest man alive.
One night the boss was late getting back to the hotel.
He said he'd met a young lady, they'd gone out and then he dropped her
at her hotel.
"Was she pretty?" the fellow asked.
"Was she?" the boss replied.
"The entire cab ride to her hotel I could hardly keep my eyes on the meter."
