A fundamental change is happening in entertainment around the world.
People are relying more and more on their televisions and CD players for their entertainment.
The problem is that people want to choose what they do and when and where they do it.
This makes home-based entertainment more attractive than live performances.
The biggest theaters located in large cities find they have to focus on glamorous productions with top stars to attract the crowds.
Meanwhile, many small and medium-sized arts organizations face growing financial pressures.

The Apollo Theater, the Harlem landmark in New York, has been a major showcase for top black entertainers since the 1930s.
Built in 1913, it began as a comedy house where blacks weren't allowed as an audience.
But in 1920 it was offering shows that usually included Jazz and in 1932 it became a black comedy house.
It wasn't until renovations were made in the mid-1930s that the Apollo became a world-renewed place for Jazz musicians.
Recently the Apollo has been operating as a nonprofit performance center.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

I recall watching Das Boot as originally distributed in the U.S.―in German, with English subtitles.
It was a fabulous movie, and I thought the actors' native German language contributed substantially to the feeling of compelling unreality that gave the movie such a powerful effect.
I enthusiastically took friends to see it again some months later―after it had gotten popular and was dubbed into English
―and found that the dubbing had stripped much of the movie's dramatic power.
Exiting the theater, I didn't have the same remarkable feeling I'd had with the original,
when I'd felt like I was a German sailor escaping a steel-walled watery tomb.

Film is the director's medium, television the writer's, but the theater is the actor's.
When the actor is onstage, it is he and he alone who drives the moment.

That's the real magic of the profession.
The actor onstage is all-powerful, for once the curtain rises, he is in control.
There is nothing the director or author can do once the curtain goes up.
The actor can choose to do or say anything he likes; he is the governor; he cracks the whip.

As long as the term "art" is applied to a realm so vast and indefinite as to embrace
literature, music and dance, theater and film, the visual and decorative arts, and other
equally diverse activities, their classification - the way in chich each is regarded as
being either unique or like others - will remain a controversial but necessary undertaking.

Eisenhower's major virtue, which appeared less important in 1962 than it does
now, was a sense of proportion; he had an instinctive knowledge of what could be
done and, more important, what could not be done. As far back as 1951, for example,
when the French were fighting in Viet Nam, he forsaw nothing but swamps. "I'm
convinced that no military victory is possible in that kind of theater," he noted. In
1955 members of his Cabinet predicted imminent war with Red China in the Formosa
Strait. Ike knew better: "I have so often been through these periods of strain
that I have become accustomed to the fact that most of the calamities that we
anticipate really never occur."
* a sense of proportion:

India has one of the largest film industries in the world. Its producers crank

It is evident that no professional writer can afford only to write when he
feels like it. If he waits till he is in the mood, till he has the
inspiration as he says, he waits indefinitely and ends by producing
little or nothing. The professional writer creates the mood.
He has his inspiration too, but he controls and subdues it to his bidding
by setting himself regular hours of work. But in time writing becomes
a habit, and like the old actor in retirement, who gets restless when
the hour arrives at which he has been accustomed to go down to the theater
and make up for the evening performance, the writer itches to get to his
pens and paper at the hours at which he has been used to write.

When the farmer and his wife returned home from a visit to the city,
their friends asked what they had thought of the place.
"It's beautiful," the man answered, "and the people are very kind.
One evening we went to a theater that said, 'ballet,' and we had
just sat down when my wife fell asleep. Well, about 20 men and women
came out on stage, and so as not to wake her, they all danced on
their toes."

In the day of Mussolini's prestige, it is said that he was once stranded
in a small town due to the breaking down of his automobile.
He went into a local cinema. When his picture appeared on the screen
everyone rose but he remained seated. The manager of the theater came
forward, tapped him on the shoulder, whispering in his ears, "I feel
the same way but you'd better stand up. It's safer."

A:How about taking a taxi to the theater?
B:I think we had better take a bus.
A:Why?
왜?
B:It's never easy to catch a taxi during rush hour.
*
how about taking a taxi?=Shall we take a taxi?=Would you like to take a
taxi?=Let's take a taxi, shall we?=Do you think we had better take a
taxi? Why?는 Why do you think we had bertter take a
bus? It's ne
ver easy는 It's almost impossible과 같은 뜻이다. We had better take a bus를
We may(might) as well take a bus

A:What do you do inyour spare time?
B:Oh, nothing special. I read, watch TV, or go to the movies.
**
여가시간을 영어로 spare time, leisure time, free time 또는 extra time
[영화 보러 간다]는 go to the movies 나 go to a movie 혹은 go to the theater

A theater was demolished by a 50-mile-an-hour gale.

I got a ticket on the way to the theater.

A few weeks ago at a large theater I turned to my wife and said, "The
picture is out of focus." "Be quiet," she answered. I obeyed. But a few
minutes later I raised the point again, with growing impatience. "It will
be all right in a minutes," she said in a low voice not to disturb the
audience around. I waited. It was just out of focus -- not glaringly out,
but out. So after bothering my wife throughout the first part of the
movie, I finally prevailed upon her to admit it was off, and very
annoying.

I remember I had quite pleasant activities after school. When I
returned home after school, dinner was usually ready. When I finished my
homework after dinner, I went to the swimming pool or to the public
library. During the weekends, I went with my father to the movie theater
or to a museum. These activities, however, were quite different from my
mother's.

Throughout much of civilized history, people have made distinctions between the arts, ranking some higher than others.
Classical music, for instance, has long been viewed as being more serious or sophisticated than folk or popular songs.
And so it is with the other arts:
painting is thought to be higher than cartooning, theater higher than movies, literature higher than drugstore fiction.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those
rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and
costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be
provided for performances, and when the entire community did not
participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area"
and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since
considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the
enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task.

Another theory traces the theater's origin from the human interest in
storytelling. According to this view, tales (about the hunt, war, or
other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of
impersonations, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the
assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related
theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and
gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.

Aside from perpetuating itself, the sole purpose of the American Academy
and Institute of Arts and Letters is to "foster, assist and sustain an
interest" in literature, music, and art. This it does by
enthusiastically handing out money. Annual cash awards are given to
deserving artists in various categories of creativity: architecture,
musical composition, theater, novels, serious poetry, light verse,
painting, sculpture. One award subsidizes a promising American writer's
visit to Rome. There is even an award for a very good work of fiction
that failed commercially ― once won by the young John Updike for the
Poorhouse Fair and, more recently, by Alice Walker for In Love and
Trouble.
(American Academy and
Institute of Arts and Letters)
최근에는 Alice Walker 에게 In Love and Trouble 이라는 작품에 주어졌다.

As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and
perhaps a cellist, would be added to the pianist in certain cases, and
in the larger movie theaters small orchestras were formed. For a number
of years the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in
the hands of the conductor or leader of the orchestra, and very often
the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or
taste so much as the ownership of a large personal library of musical
pieces.

Eat popcorn!" were flashed tachistoscopically during the regularly scheduled

Commented one writer." ... we have reached the sad age when minds and not

[John's Diary]
It felt like a typical cool autumn day this morning. Thanks
to last night's rain, the sky was high and the morning air
was real fresh and moist. Never did I think getting up early
would feel this good. Again, I couldn't hear the next door
mutt barking his head off. Maybe the owner decided it was
time to eat old spot to mark the dog days of summer.
Tsk...Tsk... Poor mongrel. Jill and I would see the first
showing of Neo Killer II. I had plenty of time left, but I'd
better hurry not to be late again.
Today was like ...
표현이 never did I ~식의 부정 도치구문이지요.
Never did I dream you'd love me too.
I never dreamed you'd love me too.
The next door mutt is barking.
이렇게 쉬운 문장을 barking his head off라고 썼습니다.
She cried her eyes out.
She screamed her head off.
Today marks our 30th wedding anniversary.
Spot.
Tsk.
Tsk. Mongrel.
말이니 the first showing이면 되지요.
The Neo theater
offers an extra discount for the matinee showtimes just
before 6 PM.
언제든지 문장을 chop it off!

[John's Diary]
The 2 minutes felt like 2 hours! I hurried out of the station
and ran towards the theater. I crashed into an oncoming lady.
A pile of papers the lady was holding dropped and scattered
everywhere. I apologized again and again, and broke into a
run. Well, today would not have been complete without so many
people on the street! The crowds added to the absurdity of it
all. It was disgustingly hot and humid, as usual. I finally
got to the theater and saw a never-ending line of people.
1. Hurried out of the station: Hurry
명사로 써서 in a hurry를 쓸 수도 있습니다.
I ran out of the station in a hurry.
2. Crashed into an oncoming lady: Crash
Hey, are you driving towards my house?
Nope. I'm driving INTO your house.
I'm not ready for the oncoming shockwave of societal
transformation.
3. Broke into a run: Break
He broke into a smile when he heard it.
His voice broke.
4. Today would not have been complete without so many people
Today would not have been complete without a construction in
the middle of the road!
5. The crowds added to the absurdity of it all: 하필이면
His father's death added to his misery.
6. Disgustingly hot and humid:
7. Never-ending line of people: Never-ending story
He gave me a "who-the-hell-are-you" look.
He looked at me as if to say "who the hell are you."
Teens model themselves after the movie stars.
Model oneself after(on) someone
Teens look at our movie stars and they model themselves after them.
He tried to model himself after his father.

Profoundly disturbing in this regard was a protest rally,
staged on Thursday by people in our film industry, against
the government's possible move to relax or scrap the "screen
quota system" which makes it *mandatory for local movie
theaters to show domestic films for at least 146 days a year,
with possible 20-day reduction to 106 days available by
permission.

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
