disciple은 a disciple of Jesus처럼 성서의 영향을 크게 받아서, 어원적인 pupil의 뜻으로는 영어에서는 별로 쓰이지 않는다. 때로 옛 시대와 관련해서, 또는 유머러스한 용법에서 쓰이지만, 그런 경우에도 스승의 가르침에 대한 헌신적인 신봉의 뜻을 품고 있다.

unique와 singular는 동의어로 쓰일 수 있다. singular는 같은 종류의 것과는 다른 것을 뚜렷이 나타내서, 개성을 강조한다.

exceptional 역시 예외를 만드는, 예외적인, 비상한 사례를 이루는 것이라는 뜻에서 unique의 동의어로 쓰일 수 있지만, 흔히 singular처럼 ‘보통이 아닌’(unusual), '비범한‘(extraordinary)의 뜻으로 사용된다.

retire에 관하여.......
* 원래 retire는 '은퇴하다' 는 뜻으로 많이 쓰나 그 외도
'잠자리에 든다'는 뜻도 있다. 예를 들면 기자 회견에서 기자가
어떤 저명한 정치인에게 When are you going to retire?라고
물었는데 대답이 At ten o'clock이라고 했다. 질문을 한 그
신문 기자는 '언제 은퇴할 생각이십니까?'란 뜻으로 질문을
했는데 '10시에'란 동문서답을 한 것이다. 이것은 retire의
'잠자리에 든다'란 뜻 때문에 농담삼아 질문에 답한걸로
생각하면 될 것이다. '잠자리에 든다'는 go to bed, go to sleep

Linda was walking home from work one day last month, when she saw a man who was trying to break into a car.
She asked him what he was doing.
