This is a wonderful invention.
No one knows who invented it or when it happened.
A Swiss described it in a book in 1565.
He said it was a piece of wood with lead (Pb) inside it.
It wasn't popular at that time.
Then in 1795 someone started making it from graphite and it became very popular.
Graphite is a kind of coal.
Today people make it in the same way.
They grind the graphite, make it into the shape of a stick, and bake it.
Then they put it inside a piece of wood.
It can write 50,000 English words or make a line 55 kilometers long.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
“A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

When I was working in the yard, my four-year-old son, Tommy, came running over to me.
He asked me to get his ball out of a hole.
He said that the ball had rolled into the hole while playing soccer in the driveway.
I tried to reach my hand for it but the hole was too deep.
I brought a long stick, but it was not helpful.
I said to my son, “I'm sorry, but there seems to be no way to get it out.”
Then my son said, “Why don't we float it out?”
We filled the hole with water and, to our great relief and delight, the ball floated to the top!

My love of kite began one day last March.
I was sketching a robin in my backyard when a loud noise startled me.
An eagle was swooping down from the sky.
As it fell, it screamed “Waaah!"
It lay still.
The eagle was made of painted paper!
Then I heard the sound again behind me: "Waaah!"
Turning, I saw Tommy, the seven-year-old who lives next door, crying.
"Is it broken?" he asked through tears.
"I don't know," I said.
"What happened?"
"It hit a tree and fell."
I lifted the toy and studied it.
The round wooden stick that supported the kite was broken.
Fixing and flying it for two hours, I was so excited that I couldn't believe the fun I had.

should a similar situation arise in the future, we won't make the same mistakes.
And finally, regret is a signal to others that we are sorry that it happened,
which may get them to stick with us and trust us in the future.

If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
“My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.

The very moment he *yanked up his zipper, the bus *lurched and the woman seated next to him flipped the tail of her fox fur over her shoulder.
The fur got stuck in the man's zipper, and they were hopelessly entangled.
The woman, furious and not at all accepting of the man's apologies, suddenly yelled, "This is my stop!"
She got up to leave and of course, the man had to get off the bus with her.
The last my friend saw of this ill-fated couple was the two of them on the street corner, struggling to get free from one another.

And many a failure turns about
When he might have won if he'd stuck it out;

Stick to your task, though the pace seems slow―
You may succeed with one more blow.

It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit―
It's when things seem worst that YOU MUSTN'T QUIT.

One of the first things a visitor does upon arrival in another country is familiarize himself with the local money.
American money is unlike the money used in many countries, since the bills, or paper money, are all the same color and size regardless of their amount.
Visitors should be careful to look at the bill before giving it out.
In addition, as is often the case with all the paper money, new bills often stick together.

Supermarket managers have all kinds of tricks to encourage people to spend more money.
Their aim is to make customers go more slowly through the supermarket.
They place colorful displays in surprising places to catch the customers' attention.
They also make the corridors near the cash registers more narrow.
Then customers with large shopping carts will get stuck or have to slow down.
In some supermarkets, the floor is even slightly uphill for people going towards the exits.
Managers hope that when customers slow down, they will buy a few extra items.

All night the man on the rig had been pushing the drilling pipe deeper
into the soil below Louisiana's Lake Peigneur. At about 1,240 feet the
pipe, a 39-ton string of steel, got stuck and they couldn't work it loose.

A man who can stick to nothing is sure to fail, no matter what he may undertake.

In a town near Amsterdam they had to erect a statue to somebody no Dutchman
ever heard of - "Pieter." He's the brave little Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the
dike and saved the area form flooding.
The story of Pieter is entirely an American invention, but so many American
visitors asked about him that the Dutch decided it was only sensible to erect a status
in his honor.
