Students' Violent Clash With Police :
^^We deplore the violent clashes that indiscreet student activists had
with riot police from Tuesday in Seoul in connection with the
unauthorized unification festival organized by the federation of student
councils, or Hanchongnyon. We also recognize the inevitability of the
joint direction the three Cabinet members responsible for home affairs,
justice and education issued on Wednesday to deal sternly with the
radical students, sending in riot police and helicopters to fire tear gas
to disperse the militant pipe-wielding students hurling stones and
firebombs.

^^Of course, a similar pro-Pyongyang line was followed fully or partially
from the 1980s by its predecessors, Chondaehyop, Minmintu and other
radical anti-government opposition groups. However, Hanchongnyon is
quite different from these other radical opposition groups in the degree to
which it is prepared to resort to violent and militant action by its
members just like an organized militia, admittedly without guns and
swords, but equipped with souped-up firebombs, iron pipes and stones,
which can be lethal too.

Diamonds are older than nearly everything else on earth.
They have been used to cut glass, cure snakebites, and charm kings and queens.
Famed for their flashing beauty, diamonds are the hardest substance on earth and among the most useful.
However, digging for diamonds is an expensive and exhausting operation.

Will you have good luck if you carry a silver dollar?
Many people believe that carrying a certain coin can bring good luck.
Sometimes women wear a coin on a bracelet for luck.
A coin with a hole in it is supposed to be especially lucky in some countries.
This idea got started long ago, before coins were used.
People believed that a shell or a stone with a hole in it could keep away evil spirits.
Coins with a hole would do the same.
There are many other beliefs about how money can bring good luck:
a jar of pennies in the kitchen will bring good luck.
A coin in the bride's shoe at a wedding will lead to a happy marriage.

At that moment, all the children were afraid and ran away except Ted.

Finally he picked up a big stone and threw it to break the aquarium glass.
Everybody admired him because he was calm and clever.

Wealth is not merely banknotes or even gold and silver and precious stones.
Ultimately it is things - the food in the stores, the minerals from the ground, the

Wild Palms : This five-episode series, premiering on ABC, is a slice of paranoiacs' heaven.
Co-executive producer and conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone has found a soul mate in writer Bruce Wagner, whose novel Force Majeure sketched the downward spiral of an alienated Hollywood screenwriter.
Wagner sets his Wild Palms, based on his magazine comic strip of the same name, fifteen tears in the future, in a postdepression Los Angeles that's far creepier than Twin Peaks.

It would be best if the "viewing" could be done here in Seoul. This
would permit us to assemble a representative group of inter-
ested parties, which would be impractical at another location. This
group would comprise representatives of several leading, corporations
and some possible collaborators in the distribution effort, including a
well production firm and publisher. We would also have the chance tp
discuss prospects firsthand. Thus, the Seoul venue would permit us to

While holding a fishing rod on the river bank, a little girl suddenly
felt something and saw the fishing rod bowing like a question mark. She
grasped it tightly as a powerful fish took her line. The stones on the
river bank rolled under her feet, and she was being pulled into the
river. The seven-year-old girl looked around in fear, but couldn't see
anybody. Though she tried hard to pull the fish towards her, she was
pulled deeper into the river. She was about to be drowned by the
creature.

My heart wants to beat

Like the wings of the birds
That rise from the lake to the trees
My heart wants to sigh like a chime
That flies from a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook
When it trips and falls over stones on its way
To sing through the night
Like a lark who is learning to pray

The population problem set in, and was dealt with in two different ways:

those who lived in the middle of the forest learned to throw coconuts with such accuracy as to disable adversaries, whose consequent death relieved the pressure of population,

ith Robert Laurent and William Zorach, direct carving enters into the
story of modern sculpture in the United States. Direct carving ― in
which the sculptors themselves carve stone or wood with mallet and
chisel ― must be recognized as something more than just a technique.
Implicit in it is an aesthetic principle as well : that the medium has
certain qualities of beauty and expressiveness with which sculptors must
bring their own aesthetic sensibilities into harmony. For example,
sometimes the shape or veining in a piece of stone or wood suggests,
perhaps even dictates, not only the ultimate form, but even the subject
matter.

The most important feature of the Australopithecus robustus hand was the
pollical distal thumb tip, the last bone in the thumb. The bone had an
attachment point for a "uniquely human" muscle, the flexor pollicis
longus, that had previously been found only in more recent ancestors.
That muscle gave Australopithecus robustus an opposable thumb, a feature
that would allow them to grip objects, including tools. The researchers
also found primitive bone and stone implements, especially digging
tools, in the same layers of sediments.
Australopithecus

The most financially rewarding of all the Academy-Institute awards are
the Mildred and Harold Strauss Livings. Harold Strauss, a devoted editor
at Alfred A. Knopf, the New York publishing house, and Mildred Strauss,
his wife, were wealthy and childless. They left the Academy-Institute a
unique bequest : for five consecutive years, two distinguished (and
financially needy) writers would receive enough money so they could
devote themselves entirely to "prose literature"(no plays, no poetry,
and no paying job that might distract). In 1983, the first Strauss
Livings of $35,000 a year went to short-story writer Raymond Carver and
novelist-essayist Cynthia Ozick. By 1988, the fund had grown enough so
that two winners, novelists Diane Johnson and Robert Stone, each got
$50,000 a year for five years.
Alfred A.
Mildred
Robert Stone

Anthropological evidence pushes the record of handedness in early human
ancestors back to at least 1.4 million years ago. One important line of
evidence comes from flaking patterns of stone cores used in toolmaking:
implements flaked with a clockwise motion (indicating a right-handed
toolmaker) can be distinguished from those flaked with a
counter-clockwise rotation (indicating a left-handed toolmaker).

Even scratches found on fossil human teeth offer clues. Ancient humans
are thought to have cut meat into strips by holding it between their
teeth and slicing it with stone knives, as do the present-day Inuit.
Occasionally the knives slip and leave scratches on the users' teeth.
Scratches made with a left-to-right stroke direction (by right-handers)
are more common than scratches in the opposite direction (made by
left-handers).

Another early Native American tribe in what is now the southwestern part
of the United States was the Anasazi. By A.D. 800 the Anasazi Indians
were constructing multistory pueblos - massive, stone apartment
compounds. Each one was virtually a stone town, which is why the Spanish
would later call them pueblos, the Spanish word for towns. These pueblos
represent one of the Anasazis' supreme achievements.

At least a dozen large stone houses took shape below the bluffs of Chaco
Canyon in northwest New Mexico. They were built with masonry walls more
than a meter thick and adjoining apartments to accommodate dozens even
hundreds, of families. The largest, later named Pueblo Bonito (Pretty
Town) by the Spanish, rose in five terraced stories, contained more than
800 rooms, and could have housed a population of 1,000 or more.

Besides living quarters, each pueblo included one or more kivas ―
circular underground chambers faced with stone. They functioned as
sanctuaries where the elders met to plan festival, perform ritual
dances, settle pueblo affairs, and impart tribal lore to the younger
generation. Some kivas were enormous. Of the 30 or so at Pueblo Bonito,
two measured 20 meters across. They contained niches for ceremonial
objects, a central fire pit, and holes in the floor for communicating
with the spirits of tribal ancestors.

Each pueblo represented an astonishing amount of well-organized labor.
Using only stone and wood tools, and without benefit of wheels or draft
animals, the builders quarried ton upon ton of sandstone from the canyon
walls, cut it into small blocks, hauled the blocks to the construction
site, and fitted them together with mud mortar. Roof beams of pine or
fir had to be carried from logging areas in the mountain forests many
kilometers away. Then, to connect the pueblos and to give access to the
surrounding tableland, the architects laid out a system of public roads
with stone staircases for ascending cliff faces. In time, the roads
reached out to more than 80 satellite villages within a 60-kilometer
radius.

Building materials are among the oldest human artifacts, but today's
materials differ appreciably from those used prior to the nineteenth
century. Superbly sculptured buildings of natural stone, built several
thousand years ago, survive to prove that the skill is of very ancient
origin. Even civilizations that lacked metal tools succeeded in working
stone with remarkable precision. These were exceptional even in their
own time, however, the most common building materials in the Ancient
World and in the developing countries until recently being timber (or
bamboo or reeds) and sun-dried bricks. These readily available materials
were, and are, nondurable, but simple buildings using them could, and
can, be erected quickly and cheaply.

The potter uses one of the Earth's most basic materials, clay. Clay can
be found almost anywhere. Good pottery must be free from all small
stones and other hard materials that would make the potting process
difficult. Most North American artisan-potters now purchase commer-
cially processed clay, but some find the clay they need right in the
earth, close to where they work.

The fortune-tellers of the Middle Ages selected a gem for each month and
told people that wearing these stones would keep them from harm.

The early history of the human race is most clearly and readily studied by
observing the stages of human technological progress. That is why it was a
longstanding convention to divide early history into broad periods according to
the hard materials-stone, copper, bronze, and iron, in that order-from which
cutting tools and weapons were made. Then, as knowledge of the past increased,
the broad periods were further subdivided. The Stone age was divided into the
Old (Paleolithic) period and the New (Neolithic) period when it was noticed that
the technique of sharpening flint and other stones changed from flaking to
grinding.

Historians generally agree that the English alphabet descended from ancient
Egypitian hieroglyphics, or "sacred writings," that were first rercorded by
priets more than 5,000 years ago. Hieroglyphics are pictures carved in stone or
inscribed on papyrus. For centuries after Egypt's decline, explorers who
discovered hieroglyphic carvings in Egypt were mystified as to their meaning.

But in 1799 an officer in Napoleon's army discovered near the Egyptian village
of Rosetta a smooth, thick black stone covered with carvings that were divided
into three separate sections. One section was a historical account in Greek, one
was in hieroglyphics, and one was in demotics or simplified hieroglyphics. The
Greek account said that it was exactly the same as the Egyptian writing and this
finding enabled scholars to decipher the mysterious ancient carvings.

We have all been raised with the phrase "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me."
This statement is not true.
In fact it is an outright lie!
Words do hurt.

Driving at close to 45 miles per hour on a straight stretch of road, Mary took little notice of a dump truck approaching from the opposite direction.
Suddenly a rock fell from the truck's load.
It bounced high off the pavement, directly into the path of her blue 1991 Ford.
At a great speed, the stone was rushing into her car.
