Once I began writing my essay at 2:30 a.m.
At that time, I was proud of my material I had gathered.
However, after handing in my essay, I began to worry about what I had actually written.
Several days later, my teacher handed back the corrected essays.
Mine came back with red ink all over it.
Not only had I made a lot of spelling mistakes, but I had written strange sentences like, “Jazz, a direct result of hot dogs and hamburgers....”
Needless to say, I did not get a very good grade on that essay.

In Cairo, university students were given lower grades on papers if they used anything other than the proper British spelling of words.
Today many teachers and professors in Egypt who spent time studying in the United States allow either spelling for a word like “centre/center.”
Thailand has experienced a similar situation.
In schools and English newspapers in Thailand, British English is still considered the standard,
but many teachers and professors who were trained in the United States speak with an American accent.
Even in Europe, British and American English have begun to mix so much that linguists are now studying what they call “mid-Atlantic” English.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

"There are two things in Japan that determine one's life," explains Taizo Kato, a professor of sociology at Waseda University.
일본에는 사람의 삶을 결정짓는 두 가지가 있다고 와세다 대학 사회학과의 다이조 가토 교수가 설명한다.
"One is marriage and the other is the college entrance examination."
"하나는 결혼이고 다른 하나는 대학입학 시험이다."
Passing is everything.
합격이 곧 모든 것이다.
A good score justifies the nearly round-the-clock routine of study that begins in grade school; the result is a ticket into the highest levels of industry, finance or government.
좋은 점수는 초등학교 때 시작되는 거의 하루 종일 규칙적으로 공부하는 것을 정당화시킨다.
그 결과는 가장 높은 수준의 산업, 재정, 정부로 들어가는 티켓이다.
Failure spells abject humiliation for the family and the likelihood of a dismal career.
실패는 가족에게 비참한 굴욕과 우울한 직업의 가능성의 주문을 건다.

Many of my students were producing homework essays typed on their computers.
많은 나의 학생들은 컴퓨터로 타자쳐진 수필과제를 제출했다.
These essays were very neat.
이 수필들은 매우 깔끔했다.
In addition, the spelling was impeccable, since the students used spell-check devices.
더욱이, 철자법은 완벽했다.
왜냐하면 학생들이 철자확인장치를 이용했기 때문이다.
Some even had grammar checkers.
심지어 몇몇은 문법확인기까지도 사용했다.

I didn't know how to deal with this.
나는 이 문제를 어떻게 다루어야할지 몰랐다.
The students with computers had a big advantage over their classmates.
컴퓨터를 가진 학생들은 그들의 동급생보다 큰 이점을 가졌다.
On the other hand, they had taken the time to become computer-literate.
반면에 그들은 컴퓨터를 사용할 수 있는 능력을 가지기 위한 시간을 투자했다.
It was impossible to compare a painstakingly handwritten essay with spelling errors to the sanitized computer version.
손으로 성실하게 썼지만 철자 오류가 있는 수필을 컴퓨터로 깨끗이 검토한 것과 비교한다는 것은 불가능한 것이다.

I suppose it was worth all the aggravation you caused, not to mention the potential for accidents.
나는 사고의 가능성을 배제한다면 당신이 했던 소란은 가치가 있다고 생각한다.
You must have known that if traffic was averaging 30 mph you could shave all of two minutes off of your total travel time for every 264 car lengths that you gained.
당신은 차들이 30마일로 움직일 때 당신이 264대를 추월하는데 걸린 시간의 2분을 줄일 수 있는 것을 알았음이 틀림없다.
For those who need to have things spelled out for them, here it is.
상세히 설명된 것을 원하는 사람들에게 그것들이 여기 있다.

Another is that, as Europeans go, the English are not intellectual. They have
a horror of abstract thought; they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic
"world-view." Nor is this because they are "practical," as they are so fond of
claiming for themselves. One has only to look at their methods of town planning
and water supply, their obstinate clinging to everything that is out of date
and a nuisance, a spelling system that defies analysis, and a system of weights
and measures that is intelligible only to the compilers of arithmetic books,
to see how little they care about mere efficiency.
