English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

The two-day weekend is a great opportunity for students to relax after a week of hard study.
They can indulge in recreations and hobbies, and meet friends.
They can also do extra reading for self-improvement, for which they normally cannot find time.
However, there are students who waste their time on weekends.
Sometimes they waste both time and money playing computer games or hanging around on the street,
and as a result, are too tired on Monday to concentrate on their studies.
The best way to spend the weekend is to revise the previous week's lessons and prepare for those of the coming week.

Even native speakers have to check sometimes to see if they understand information correctly.
If the information we get is very complicated or we have heard it second-hand,
we sometimes want to reconfirm that the information we have is correct.
On the other hand, sometimes we have to correct someone who has either received wrong information or misunderstood what they have heard.
In such cases, we have to set the record straight and tell them the actual facts.
Repeating and connecting what we've heard leads to a clear understanding of information.

As a consumer of goods and services, you will sometimes need to communicate with a manufacturer concerning the quality of what you have purchased.
Notes of praise take very little effort and can make a big difference to the receiver.
It is especially thoughtful in the case of direct service.
Waiters, gas station attendants, or flight attendants all deserve positive feedback.
Sending an acknowledgment to the management of the organization that provided the service is a means of communication that consumers can use more often.
These contacts can be made in writing or verbally.

Robert: Do you think e-mail is convenient to use?
Sophia: I'm afraid not. It can take time to check and clear my e-mail box.
And it is wasteful of my time. Sometimes, the lines are busy, and it's difficult to log on.
Sometimes, the system crashes and can't be used.
Robert: Have you made mistakes when you send an e-mail?
Sophia:Yes, of course. The other day I complained about my boss in an e-mail to another employee.
I pressed the wrong key to send it, and everyone in the office got the mail, including my boss.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

During childhood sisters and brothers are a major part of each other's lives, for better or for worse.
As adults they may drift apart as they become involved in their own careers, marriages and families.
But in later life, with retirement, when parents and sometimes spouses are gone, brothers and sisters often turn back to each other for a special affection and link to the past.
“In the stressful, fast-paced world we live in, the sibling relationship becomes for many the only intimate connection that seems to last,” says a psychologist.
Friends and neighbors may move away, former coworkers are forgotten, but our sisters and brothers remain our sisters and brothers.

Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

During his years as mayor of New York City, Guardia sometimes presided as judge in a night court.
In one case, a man was found guilty of stealing a loaf of bread.
He claimed that he had committed that theft to feed his starving family.
“The law is the law,” La Guardia declared.
“I must therefore fine you $10.”
When the man sadly confessed that he had no money, the judge took $10 out of his wallet and paid the fine.
He also asked each person in the courtroom to contribute 50 cents to help the man.
There and then, they accepted his request.
Finally, the law-breaker was set free and even blessed with an undeserved gift.

The experience is a familiar one to many in an emergency-room.
A patient who has been pronounced dead and unexpectedly recovers later describes what happened to him during those moments―sometimes hours―when his body showed no signs of life.
According to one repeated story, the patient feels himself rushing through a long, dark tunnel while noise rings in his ears.
Suddenly, he finds himself outside his own body, looking down with curious detachment at a medical team's efforts to revive him.
He hears what is said, notes what is happening but cannot communicate with anyone.
Soon, his attention is drawn to other presences in the room―spirits of dead relatives or friends―who communicate with him nonverbally.
Gradually, he is drawn to a vague ‘being of light.'
This being invites him to evaluate his life and shows him highlights of his past in panoramic vision.
The patient longs to stay with the being of light but is drawn back into his physical body and recovers.

Ice sometimes can protect crops.
Some growers actually spray their crops with water on a freezing night.
Water freezes quickly on the plants―and then a strange thing happens.
As long as ice stays wet, it cannot get colder than 0℃, a temperature many plants can stand.
If the ice ever became entirely frozen and dry, it might drop many degrees lower, ruining the plants.
But by continually spraying water on the ice, the growers keep it from going below 0℃, saving the plants.
This strange kind of “ice blanket” works only on plants that are strong enough to stand the weight of frozen spray.

Sometimes I get mail from kids whom I have taught in my writing class.
They talk about their school, friends, family, and even dating and love!
I smile at their stories, replying to their mail.
One thing I notice in each piece of mail is that they all use strange language.
People say that it’s part of Internet culture and Internet users like to speak this colloquial language.

The word “natural” appears in large letters across many cans and boxes of food.
But this word, and others like it, sometimes give shoppers false ideas about the food inside.
Even though laws require that all food labels give truthful information, this does not always happen.
The word “natural” has not been defined by the FDA, the agency in charge of food labels.
So any food maker can use the word on a package.
Even the worst junk food is certain to have something natural in it.
So the makers of these foods can use “natural” on their packages.
Consumers should read labels carefully and write letters of complaint to the FDA
whenever they come across products that are not truly natural.
Everyone in the marketplace can help to make truth in labeling work effectively.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive.
Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs.
Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals.
Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass.
Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

Sometimes, people in the European country of Greece do not even try to give directions:
that’s because tourists seldom understand the Greek language.
Instead they may gesture or say, “Follow me.”

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

Although there are thousands of species of wild animals, surprisingly few species have been domesticated.
The reason is that it takes special qualities to make animals suitable for domestication.
They must be strong enough to withstand removal from their mother at an early age.
They must breed freely in captivity and be easy to look after.
Domestic or farm animals must be able to develop a liking for man, enjoy comfort, and accept confinement and control.
And, of course, they must be useful: primarily as a source of food,
but also in the provision of wool or hide for clothing and sometimes as a means of transport or pulling power.

Will you have good luck if you carry a silver dollar?
Many people believe that carrying a certain coin can bring good luck.
Sometimes women wear a coin on a bracelet for luck.
A coin with a hole in it is supposed to be especially lucky in some countries.
This idea got started long ago, before coins were used.
People believed that a shell or a stone with a hole in it could keep away evil spirits.
Coins with a hole would do the same.
There are many other beliefs about how money can bring good luck:
a jar of pennies in the kitchen will bring good luck.
A coin in the bride's shoe at a wedding will lead to a happy marriage.

Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.

Hermit crabs occupy the empty shells of dead sea snails for protection while still retaining their mobility.
They are capable of discriminating among a selection of shells of various sizes and species,
and they choose the one that fits the body most closely.
Hermit crabs change shells as they grow, although in some marine environments a large enough variety of shells may not be available
and hermit crabs may be forced to occupy a smaller-than-ideal “house."
When a shell becomes too small for the hermit crab to occupy,
it will sometimes become aggressive and fight other hermit crabs to gain a more comfortable one.

Some researchers believe that many instances in which body and personality go together are due to stereotyping;
that is, we expect a certain type of person to have certain traits, so we see those traits whether they are there or not.
For example, muscular people are believed to be dominant and forceful, so we treat them as leaders.
But sometimes they are actually shy and timid.
Fat people are supposed to be happy and warmhearted, but in reality they can just as easily be depressed or mean.

Sometimes when I'm flying from one speaking engagement to another, I find myself sitting next to someone who's quite talkative.
This is often a pleasing experience for me because I enjoy meeting people.
I learn so much by watching and listening to the people I meet and see every day.
I've heard stories of sadness and delight which would be better than those on well-known TV programs.

If you take a closer look at your life, you'll find that you have a life purpose you've been trying to carry out.
For some people, their purpose may be as simple as raising a family or being a good friend or emotionally encouraging others.
These purposes may sound simple or insignificant, but consider how they can be a pleasure to many other lives.
Your life purpose is eventually what benefits you and others as well.
I mean, if you do something that gives you a better life and makes you feel better, it's for the benefit of all.
Sometimes, what you are aiming at may seem like an unimportant detail, but it does good to the whole.

You've passed the interview and landed the job.
Now it is your first week on the job.
Is this job right for you? Is the job what you expected?
Maybe you thought you loved working alone,
but now you're stuck in a tiny office with minimal human contact,
realizing that you hate working in a secluded setting.
A job is like a marriage or having a spouse.
Sometimes you don't know it's right for you until you live with it.
So as the saying goes, “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”
