이번 컴덱스쇼를 참관할 20만명 이상의 관람객들 대부분이 MS의 법적 시련을
화제로 올리면서 MS가 제공하는 윈도 2000의 시연회를 보게 된다. 관람객들은
인접한 리눅스관(Linux Business Expo)에서는 운영체제시장을 놓고 MS에 도전

Sun Microsystems Inc (Nasdaq:SUNW - news)., a developer of servers,
workstations and software for networked computing, plans to tout its
recent acquisition of Star Office, a free suite of office applications,
that competes with Microsoft's Office.
선 마이크로시스템즈(Sun Microsystems Inc.)는 서버와 워크스테이션,
네트웍컴퓨팅 소프트웨어 개발업체로 MS의 오피스(Office)에 대항하기 위해
만든 스타오피스(Star Office)를 내놓는다.

Corel will launch its distribution of Linux, called Corel Linux, with an
improved user interface and instant messaging software called Jabber.
Developed as an open source project, Jabber is now supported by Webb
Interactive Services.

Jabber를 단 Corel Linux를 개발해 윈도 환경에 익숙해진 컴퓨터 이용자가

Quicken.com is one of the most popular personal-finance sites on the
Web, with six million visitors a month. Mountain View-based Intuit also
makes the Quicken desktop financial software, which has 10 million
users.

During his speech, Gates painted a picture of consumers accessing the
Internet from a wide range of devices, many of them powered by
versions of Microsoft's Windows software.
``The Web will become more and more personal,'' Gates said. ``In a few
short years, we've watched computing become personal computing, and now
we will see the World Wide Web become the personal Web.''

access, smaller size and easier use.

And Microsoft, the world's largest software company, has reoriented

``We've updated Microsoft's vision for the first time in 25 years
to take advantage of the Web and to empower people through

The moratorium on customs duties, in place since a May 1998 WTO
agreement, applies only to communications, goods and services that are
transmitted electronically including digital books, music and software.

only 1 percent of worldwide customs collections.

The deal is designed to pave the way for China's admission to the World
Trade Organization, which would enhance the likelihood that the world's

technology imports, such as hardware and software. Currently, China
imposes a 6 percent tariff on computer chips and a 9 percent tariff on
computers.

Fiorina also announced plans to release a public version of HP's e-Speak
software Dec. 8. The e-Speak technology acts as a sort of universal
translator, allowing different types of computer programs to communicate
with each other.

HP is still trying to finalize the details of an open source licensing
agreement for e-Speak that would allow all users to freely copy and
change it. Although the proposed agreement is modeled on the one that
helped make the Linux operating system so popular, the company is still
wrestling with how to let other companies and individuals modify and
improve the software while still keeping control of it.

That scenario no longer looks likely, said Ken Delaney, vice president
of mobile computing for the Gartner Group in San Jose. Certainly
Microsoft will gain market share but Palm has ``solidified its OS'' as
the software of choice in a wide array of products from some of the
industry's most powerful brands.

Speculation exploded that MP3 would herald an era of limitless, free
music, but limitations quickly became obvious: The music industry thus
far has refused to release its music over the Internet until a secure
method is widely adopted for making sure they get paid for songs. Music
available on the Internet nowadays includes relatively unknown artists
and illegally posted songs.

Moreover prices of up to $400 for a player, buoyed by a recent spike in
prices of memory chips needed to store songs, excludes many everyday
buyers. And makers of software needed to download songs off the Internet
are still working out its kinks.

of copies of its free StarOffice software. Even Bluetooth, an esoteric
blueprint for standardizing wireless communications, created a fair
amount of buzz.

``I think most people here are too busy trying to build their businesses
to take advantage of all the opportunities that are out there for them
to worry about what's going on with Microsoft,'' said Mark Epperley, CEO
and founder of Traveling Software Inc. ``Particularly when that
situation might not be resolved for years to come.''

Even Microsoft's most important partners seem far more willing to
consider exploring alternatives, while continuing to rely on their close
relationship with the software company.

or replace their installed base of software. They just don't see that
benefit yet.''
