There are about 350 species of sharks, and although they are all carnivorous,
only a few species will attack people.

A group of sharks were spotted off the coast earlier this month.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

Each year, thousands of Americans die from fires. In too many of the
cases, death occurs because so much skin is burned away that vital body
functions are disrupted. Essential fluids ooze out, and natural defenses are too
weakened to fight off bacterial infection. To prevent these complications,
doctors try to cover burn sites with skin grafts from undamaged portions of the
patient's body, but often there is too little skin left and they have to resort
to using skin from pigs or cadavers. Being foreign tissue, these grafts are
usually rejected in three to 25 days. The ideal solution would be artificial
skin, a goal that has eluded scientists. But last week a team of Boston
researchers announced they had a successful skin substitute made from a
startling mixture of ingredients: cowhide, shark cartilage and plastic.

When my friend and I went for a swim at a beach near the mouth of the
Zambezi River in Mojambique, I asked a young boy, who was fishing nearby,
whether there were sharks in the water. "No," he answered.
My friend and I jumped into the water and started swimming.
After several minutes, I called out to the boy, "Are you sure there
are no sharks here?"
"No sharks," he replied. "Sharks are afraid of crocodiles."

Summer is the time of plenty, and it's now that the seals start to breed.
The strike of a great white shark lasts a mere second.
Slowing it down forty times reveals the technique
and immense strength of this massive predator.
If surprise fails, there will be a chase.
The shark is faster on a straight course but it can't turn as sharply as the seal,
its agility versus power.

Once the seals have finished breeding the giant sharks will move on.
It's now becoming clear that great whites migrate thousands of miles across the oceans
to harvest seasonal abundances in different seas.

After dark, predatory dolphin fish emerge from their daytime lairs among the rocks.
Like packs of sharks, they're on the prowl for sleeping cichlids.
In the darkness these electric fish hunt
by detecting distortions in the electric field they create around their bodies.
Any cichlid that trenches out will be snapped up.

The largest expanse grows in the shallow waters of Shark Bay, in Western Australia.
These vast aquatic grasslands stretch for fifteen hundred square miles
and, like terrestrial prairies, they support herds of grazers.
Dugongs.
Dugongs are the largest herbivores in the sea.
They can be three meters long and weigh half a ton
and they eat nothing but seagrass, mostly the fleshy risomes,
which they excavate with their mobile lips.

The aptly named ragged tooth shark.
Raggies grow to three meters long, but they share these waters with a shark twice their size.
The great white.
The largest predatory fish on the planet.

Each dawn cape fur seals leave their colony to go fishing.
To reach the open sea, they must cross a narrow strip of water

and that is patrolled by great whites.
Each seal is indeed swimming for it's life.
The shark relies on surprise.
The great white's turn of speed is powered by a high metabolism.
They only thrive in cold temperate seas
for only these waters contain sufficient food necessary to fuel such a ravenous predator.

Baitfish have come for the same reason to feed on the plankton.
The whale shark has timed it's arrival exactly right.
Oddly, the tiny fish swarm around it.
They're using it as a shield.

Now the tuna have a chance to attack the unprotected baitfish
but then
back comes the giant.
It has taken a vast mouthful of the baitfish itself.
Plankton, it seems, is not the only food for a whale shark.

Both shark and tuna feast together
but the tuna must be wary.
Even they can end up in the whale shark's stomach.

Many predators spend much of their time cruising the open ocean
endlessly searching.
Plankton feeding rays do so, gliding with minimum effort.
The oceanic whitetip shark
another energy efficient traveler.
It specializes in locating prey in the emptiest areas of the open ocean
patrolling the top one hundred meters of water.
Taste in water, is the equivalent of smell in the air.
An oceanic whitetip is able to detect even the faintest trace.

Small pilot fish swim with it.
The shark can find prey far more easily than they can
and they'll be able to collect the scraps from it's meals.
It's long, fixed pectoral fins
enable it to soar through the water, with the least expenditure of energy.

This shark has found a school of rainbow runners.
It would eat one, given the chance
but rainbow runners are swift and agile and not easily caught
so, it bides it's time.
There's a chance that, eventually, it may spot a weakened fish that's catchable.

When you hear the word shark

you probably think of a big, dangerous fish that kills and eats people.
Most people are afraid of sharks because they've heard that sometimes sharks attack swimmers.
In reality, though, most sharks do not attack people at all.

Every year, fewer than 100 people in the whole world are attacked by sharks and only 5 to 10 people die from shark attacks.
But how many sharks do people kill? In fact, people hunt and kill thousands of sharks.
One reason people kill sharks is for sport; they hunt them just for fun.

After people saw the movie Jaws, many of them became more afraid of sharks and wanted to kill sharks.

Another reason that people kill sharks is for food.
In the United States and Great Britain, shark meat is a popular food.
In China and Korea, people use shark fins to make soup.
Because so many people like to eat shark, fishing boats catch a lot of sharks to sell for food.

Some biologists are getting worried that the number of sharks is getting too small.
Therefore, many biologists think we should stop killing so many sharks, and instead try to protect them.

Some countries have already passed laws to help protect sharks.
The United States, for example, has passed laws that limit the number of sharks that people can kill for food or for sport.
So even though some people like to hunt sharks, we need to protect them.

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
Will에도 추정의
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
When you get there, please call me.
5. For nothing:
Good for nothing이라는
You're good for nothing.
pull in한다고 합니다.
7. Didn't bother to line up:
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm
The loan sharks stormed into my office.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요.
10. Jumping the line:
Jump the gun이라는 말도
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
He forced his way through the crowd.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
He felt his way out of the room.
She kept up the relationship with them.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
They've kept up with each other even as they broke up.
I try to keep up the relationship with those I met when I
worked as a teaching student.

"I've seen a lot of office workers, who just joined the workforce, regret so much after borrowing much without knowing the difference between banks, non-bank financial institutions, and loan-sharks," a commercial bank insider said. "The difference in lending rates would be a good enough reason to try banks first."

'a loan shark'라는 표현이 있다.
Sailor:So you bought this boat on a loan?
Sailor:That's what I'm saying, and today is the day I have to pay the
interest.
Sailor:Do you have to pay a lot of money?
Sailor:Right. Darn it,I must have gone to a loan shark. Imagine! The
interest is 30 a year.
Sailor:you must have been crazy.
Sailor:Whoops! There comes the loan shark! I'll plunge into the water.
Sailor:Are you crazy? This wharf is teeming with real sharks.

Dexter: It seems to me that the depth of the water would be the key.
Obviously, in the middle of the ocean, the shark would win.

And on dry land the lion would win.
So, HOW MUCH WATER ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?
Erik : Two and a half feet.
Dexter: And how big is the shark?
Erik : Eleven feet.
Dexter: I STILL SAY THAT THE LION WOULD WIN.
Erik : Wrong.
Dexter: How can you be sure?
Erik : 'Cause they did research on it at Stanford University.
* 'cause = because
THE SHARK WON EASILY.
Dexter: They just let two animals kill each other as a college?
Erik : No, you idiot. They just had them fight long enough to see
who was going to win.
And then their trainers pulled them apart.
Dexter: How?
Erik : Haven't you ever heard of a leash?
Dexter: I NEVER HEARD OF A SHARK WITH A LEASH.
Erik : Well, there's a lot of things you've never heard of.
