There are no forests in Greenland; there are just some trees, shrubs, and mosses in the southern part and along the coasts.
Then how did this land get its name?
In 982, a Scandinavian explorer named Eric the Red sailed to Greenland and spent three years there.
When he returned home, he called the land he had seen “Greenland” in the hope of convincing some of his followers to settle there.

When the Spanish conqueror Pizarro transferred the capital of Peru from a site in the mountains 11,000 feet above sea level to lowland Lima,
it wasn't just for a change of scenery.
The Spanish conquerors observed that domestic animals taken to the mountains failed to reproduce.
And for over 50 years after the Spanish brought their wives and settled in the Andes,
no Spanish children were born in any of the higher altitudes.
The Indians, however, were fertile in the same climate.
The difference was that over the 9,000 years that the Indians had lived in the Andes,
they had developed enlarged lungs, a high red blood cell count, and lower blood pressure,
all of which made it possible for them to live normal lives at high altitudes.

People need water to survive, so naturally, the earliest civilizations were established on the banks of rivers.
The four major cradles of civilization were the Egyptian, on the Nile;
the Sumerian, between the Tigris and Euphrates;
the Indus Valley civilization in what is now Pakistan;
and the Chinese, on the Huang He.
The most important role of these rivers was in agriculture
because it was the ability to grow crops that allowed people to settle in one place.
Most of the world's major cities still lie on the banks of rivers.

When Dad asked Mom where we were staying, she didn't want to upset him, so she said, "We haven't settled on a place, but don't worry, we'll find something soon."
The wife of the patient in the next bed overheard her.
She invited Mom to come out in the hall and said, "I know what the hotel situation is like in this town.

We were overwhelmed by her generosity and accepted the invitation at once.
There is no way we can repay that dear woman for her extraordinary kindness.
She will always be in our prayers.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

The millions of people from different parts of the world, who have settled in America, have all contributed something to American English.
Though in the main conforming to the new ways of life they found in the new country, they could not help leaving some mark of their language on English.
In drawing upon these many elements which go to make up American culture, Americans have made their kind of English a melting pot in miniature.

Immigration in the United States has been increasing rapidly.
Each year about 600,000 new legal immigrants settle in this country.

Weinberger initially expected to reveal in March what sort of
intercontinental manned bomber the U.S. would build to replace its aging fleet
of 316 B-52s, whose mission it is to retaliate against the U.S.S.R. if a nuclear
strike is ever mounted. But here the Secretary ran into a dilemma that bedevils
all such programs: whether to wait for the development of hot new technology, at
the price of forgoing a weapon that could be used quickly, or order arms that
could be put into production rapidly, at the cost of settling for something less
effective than a later one could be.

A woman boarded an airliner after having obviously spent too must time in the
bar at the terminal. The stewardess, against her better judgement, complied with the
woman's request for a martini, but rejected a refill order minutes later. The incensed
passenger demanded, "What's your name, girl? I'm gonna report you!" "My name?"
said the stewardess. "Of course, it's right here." She pointed to the nameplate on her
uniform.
The passenger started at the nameplate. She blinked. She stared again. Then she
settled back in her seat in defeat. "Guess you're right," she muttered. "I can't read
it."

A farmer kept a prize cow in a pasture through which a railroad track ran.
Each day at the same time, a freight train passed by at great speed.
One day after the train had gone, the farmer discovered his cow was missing.
He promptly sued the railroad.
The railroad hired a young lawyer, and just before the case came to trial,
the attorney bargained with the farmer, getting him to settle for half of
what he had demanded. Proud of his achievement, the lawyer boasted as he
handed over the settlement check to the farmer: "You really had me worried.
I didn't have any witnesses. The engineer was asleep, and so was the
brakeman. You could have won the whole amount."
"Well, young fella," the farmer said as he pocketed the check, "you had me
worried, too. You see, that darned cow came home this morning."

Our Order 2781C
We have received your letter of 28th March.
We also confirm the replacement shoes you listed in that letter have arrived and appear to be in good order.
Although we realize you have now done your best to correct your earlier mistakes, we must emphasize we consider the compensation you offer totally inadequate.
It is ridiculous to suggest you will allow us an additional discount of 12% on the next order we place with you, for we have no intention of doing any further business with you.
What we want to know is what compensation you propose to offer us now.
We also want to emphasize we have no intention of settling your account until you have allowed us an adequate discount as compensation for the very considerable inconvenience you have caused us.

Then, in 1950 the Census Bureau radically changed its definition of
"urban" to take account of the new vagueness of city boundaries. In
addition to persons living in incorporated units of 2,500 or more, the
census now included those who lived in unincorporated units of that
size, and also all persons living in the densely settled urban fringe,
including both incorporated and unincorporated areas located around
cities of 50,000 inhabitants or more. Each such unit, conceived as an
integrated economic and social unit with a large population nucleus, was
named a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA).
Standard Metropolitan
Statistical Area (SMSA /

The labor that ran the factories and built the railways was recruited in
part from American farm areas where people were being displaced by farm
machinery, in part from Asia, and in part from Europe. Europe now began
to send tides of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe ― most of
whom were originally poor farmers but who settled in American industrial
cities. The money to finance this tremendous expansion of the American
economy still came from European financiers for the most part, but the
Americans were approaching the day when their expansion could be
financed in their own "money market".

The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950's, producing a
population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from
1951 to 1956. This rate of increase had been exceeded only once before
in Canada's history, in the decade before 1911, when the prairies were
being settled. Undoubtedly, the good economic conditions of the 1950's
supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived
from a trend toward earlier marriages

Besides living quarters, each pueblo included one or more kivas ―
circular underground chambers faced with stone. They functioned as
sanctuaries where the elders met to plan festival, perform ritual
dances, settle pueblo affairs, and impart tribal lore to the younger
generation. Some kivas were enormous. Of the 30 or so at Pueblo Bonito,
two measured 20 meters across. They contained niches for ceremonial
objects, a central fire pit, and holes in the floor for communicating
with the spirits of tribal ancestors.

Once settled, they begin to serenade their unseen females.
Now it's time for the females to make their move.
There's no shortage of suitors, but this female has already made her choice.
She's heading towards the loudest call, because loud calls come from big frogs
and big is best, but to reach him she must run the gauntlet of a gang of smaller suitors.
Their only chance of mating is to make a sneaky interception.
He's scored.

because they lie at a giant crossroads.
This is the meeting place for different seas the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.
Here everything demands a closer look.
On the surface of this sea fan, there are two polyps that are not polyps.
They're pygmy sea horses, the world's smallest, less than two centimeters high.

For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger.
Even if we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, however, our work to keep peace will not be done.
It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war.
To do this, we need to persuade mankind to settle international conflicts in a new way, not by force, but by agreement in accordance with principles of law.

- Rach, Rach, we gotta settle.
Settle what?
The... Jamestown colony of Virginia.
You see, King George is giving us the land, so...
The game, Rachel, the game. You owe us money for the game.
Oh. Right.
You know what, you guys? It's their first time, why don't we just forget about the money, alright?
Hell no, we'll pay!
OK, Monica? I had another answer all ready.
And you know what? We want a rematch.
Well that's fine with me. Could use the money.
So basically, you get your ya-yas by taking money from all of your friends.
...Yeah.
그럼
Yes, and I get my ya-yas from Ikea.

Seriously, Congressman, was that a joke?
I haven't seen something just lay there like that since...
I gotta go all the way back to my prom night.
Can we just settle this strike please?

So what did he say?
He says he won't talk to anybody except you.
So, can I go in?
Yeah.
그래
Thank you.
My colleague said you only wanted to speak to me.
Well, here I am. And guess what?
- Right now, you're speaking to everyone.
- What the hell is he doing?
- I thought we were going to talk alone.
- You killed a cop.
What you need to do right now is start telling me the truth.
- It was self-defence. You were chasing me.
What's he saying?
Go to hell! I'm done talking. Get this guy outta my face!
- You've got nothing. I want my lawyer! - Settle down.
- I'll take him. - Come on.
I want my phone call. You've got nothing! I want my phone call, now!
- Jack. Great job.
- He knows something.
- So are you gonna beat it out of him?
What's the plan, Jack? Hm? What's the plan?
Take a walk.
나가

Manslaughter? Are you kidding? Are you willing to settle for that?
Come on, Nick. You know as well as I do, there is more to this.
You're going 80 miles an hour in second gear.
Let's just slow down. All right?
Okay.

You find his watch and ring?
No.
아니
- My pockets are getting fat. - No. He travels light.
There's only a change of clothes in the damn suitcase.
God, did you see all that money in there?
Alright, the fumes have settled. Give me a hand, will you?

Get your hands off me. Let go of me.
Kristy, you're not going anywhere.
You got that?
Come on. Relax a little bit. Settle down.
Kristy!
You don't own me. Nobody does.
I know, I know.

So she decided, for now,
she could settle for just being his friend.

As the sun slowly settled on Wisteria lane,
an unsettled Susan racked her brain to find a way into her own house.

What are you saying?
Let's take it outside.
Let's take what outside?
Your sorry ass. We're throwing down.
You are crazy.
Just being practical.
Isn't it better to settle this once and for all,
rather than endure all this alpha mom crap until our kids graduate, hmm?
Come on.
I'll even let you take the first shot.
I don't have time for this.
Yeah, I didn't think so.

- Good morning. - Good morning.
And welcome to the first pitch meeting of "News Night" 2.0.
