brink는 벼랑, 낭떠러지 따위의 끝을 말한다. 그래서 the river's brink라고 하면 강 언덕이 가파른 것을 강조하고, the river's brim이라고 하면 강변에 대단히 가까운 것을 강조한다.
이상의 낱말들은 다 비유적 용법을 가지고 있다.

strike는 보통 겨냥을 하고 일격을 가해서 바라던 효과를 거두는 것을 암시한다. 그러나 특히 at를 거느리거나 자동사로 쓰이는 경우에는 반드시 바란 효과를 거두는 것을 의미하지는 않는다.
He struck the boy hard several times./ He struck at his opponent with his fists but the latter neatly eluded him.
이 말은 또한 손·곤봉·지팡이 따위를 사용해서 치는 것을 나타내는 대표적인 말이다.

strike는 또한 흔히 어떤 일정한 점을 조심스럽게 겨냥하고, 그 목적을 이루는 데 필요한 힘으로 그것을 건드리는 동작으로서, 자국·소리 따위를 내는 것을 암시한다.

또한 hit는 탄환 따위의 날아가는 무기·자동차 등과 확대된 용법에서는 정신·감정에 영향을 주는 충격에도 쓰인다.

smite는 고문체·시적·수사적인 말이나 글자대로의 뜻, 비유적 뜻에서 strike, hit의 대신으로 쓰일 수 있고, 때릴 때에 쓰인 힘을 강조한다.

slap은 손을 펴서 때리는 것을 말한다.

clout는 구어적 내지 방언적인 말로, 몸이나 머리를 한 번 때리거나 연거푸 때리는 것을 말한다.

* Take care of damage early. Damage to edges and fringes can be easily repaired if caught early. If worn areas are allowed to expand, repair can be costly.
