Everyone told me that when I turned fifteen some great internal change would occur.
I truly expected it to occur, but nothing happened.
When asked by my grandmother, however, I replied, “Yes, I do feel a great change has taken place.”

A man was in his front yard mowing grass when his attractive blonde female neighbor came out of the house and went straight to the mail box.
She opened it, then slammed it shut, and stormed back in the house.
A little later she came out of the house and again went to the mail box and again opened it, then slammed it shut again.
Then, she went back into the house.
Puzzled by her actions, the man asked her, "Is something wrong?"
To which she replied, "There certainly is! My stupid computer keeps giving me a message saying, "YOU'VE GOT MAIL!"

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

It is said that Abraham Lincoln, when he was President of the U.S., was advised to include a certain man in his cabinet.
When he refused, Lincoln was asked why he would not accept the man.
"I don't like his face," the President replied.
"But the poor man isn't responsible for his face," responded his advocate.
"Every man over forty is responsible for his face," said Lincoln.

After he stopped boxing, Muhammad Ali became a good magician and frequently entertained guests with his tricks.
He often explained the secret behind each trick.
“Never do a trick twice,” he once said.
“And never show the audience how you do it.”
“I don't get it, champ,” one of his friends said.
“If that's the case, then why did you show them?”
“To prove to them how easy they can be tricked!” Ali replied.

My literature class was talking about the implications of a scientist's statement
that a free fish can only see the struggles of a hooked fish but cannot know why it twists violent.
Noticing one student of the class wasn't paying attention, I asked him what he thought about that statement.
Without hesitation, he replied:
"Who cares what the free fish thinks?
I want to know what kind of lure was used to catch the hooked one."

A young lawyer began working in our office.
Her first trial was coming up, and she worked diligently on her case.
Several other experienced lawyers occasionally dropped in to see how she was doing and to offer help.
The day before her trial, she mentioned that she wasn't getting much sleep lately with the upcoming trial on her mind.
One of the experienced lawyers overheard and stopped to offer his support.
“Relax,” he said.
“Your case is well prepared, and you know your stuff.”
The beginning lawyer turned to him and replied with a smile,
“I'm not worried about my case - I'm worried about what to wear.”

Driving fast last Monday, I was pulled over by a police officer.
The officer noticed that my shirt had the name of a local secondary school on it.
“I teach math,” I explained.
He smiled and said, “OK. Here's a problem. A teacher is speeding on the highway at 25 kilometers over the limit.
At $12 for every kilometer over the limit, plus $40 court costs, what is her total cost?”
I replied, “taking that total, subtracting the low salary I receive, multiplied by the number of kids that hate math,
then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I'd say zero.”
He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”

The captain of a luxury liner was instructing a new crew member on part of his job.
“Your responsibility, sailor, in case of danger, is to yell ‘Man the lifeboats! Man the lifeboats!'”
The sailor practiced it and soon had it down perfectly.
A few hours later, the boat was hit by an iceberg and began sinking.
The sailor yelled, “Woman the lifeboats! Woman the lifeboats!” The captain was surprised.
“What's going on?” he demanded.
“Listen, captain,” the sailor replied, “you fill your boats the way you want, and I'll fill my boats the way I want!”

Sometimes I get mail from kids whom I have taught in my writing class.
They talk about their school, friends, family, and even dating and love!
I smile at their stories, replying to their mail.
One thing I notice in each piece of mail is that they all use strange language.
People say that it’s part of Internet culture and Internet users like to speak this colloquial language.

Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
“Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.

One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

When I stopped at the liquor store to buy some champagne for a wedding gift, the clerk asked to see my ID.

"They could be your nephews," she replied, unimpressed.
"How about a driver's license?"
Rummaging through my purse, I took out two rubber worms, a matchbox car, a set of baby keys, an odd sock, a smashed pack of bubble gum and a ball.
But I couldn't find my license.

"Forget it," the clerk said suddenly.
"Only a mother of three boys would have that collection in her purse!"

The man stirred finally and said, "The balcony."

"The same way you can jump up and scream when some guy you've never met scores a touchdown," she replied.

"Doctor!" exclaimed the receptionist.
"That can't be!"
"Of course not," he replied.
"But it sure cured her hiccups."

Two explorers, camped in the heart of the African jungle, were discussing their expedition.
"I came here," said one, "because the urge to travel was in my blood.
City life bored me, and the smell of exhaust fumes on the highways made me sick.
I wanted to see the sun rise over new horizons and hear the flutter of birds that never had been seen by man; I wanted to leave my footprints on sand unmarked before I came.
In short, I wanted to see nature in the raw.
What about you?
"I came," the second man replied, "because my son was taking saxophone lessons."

A parent decreed one Christmas that she was no longer going to remind her children of their thank-you-note duties.
As a result, their grandmother never received acknowledgments of the generous checks she had given.
The next year things were different, however.

The woman looked startled and replied, "Of course I do."
I said, "Well, please put her in her seat belt so you can love her longer."
In 1984, I lost twin daughters because I told myself, "Why bother with seat belts? We're only going a few blocks."
I shall never forgive myself for making that terrible mistake.
Accidents don't always happen to other people.

I replied that it was.
After a moment's pause he continued.

Betty replied rather abruptly, "Fifty pounds or so.
I'm not sure exactly how much."
Sally was surprised.
Later, however, she learned that Betty had lost a lot of money at a fancy department store.

The psychologist explained that it was a verbal test and that some of the questions were easy, while others were difficult.
The first question, for example, was "What two days in the week begin with T?"

The psychologist paused, studied his papers, and moved to the next question.

Without blinking an eye, the man said, "Twelve."
"What did you say?" asked the psychologist.

The literature instructor had spent almost the entire class period
lecturing on the life and writing of Edgar Allan Poe. He noticed one
student with a blank stare and decided to try to catch him off guard.
"Mr. Thompson, since you seem uninterested in what I have to say, I can
only conclude that you already have a vast knowledge of Poe. Perhaps you
would care to give the other members of your class the benefit this wisdom
by describing the man in one word." Without a change of expression, the
student replied, "Dead."

One of the major embarrassments to which lecturers are submitted is the
audience's looking at their watches. I once asked John Erskine if he found the
ordeal particularly trying.
"No," he replied, "not until they start shaking them!"

My husband and I first met while we were theachers in Idaho. We planned to be
married during spring vacation in my hometown in New Mexico. Since we had such
a long distance to drive, we wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools asking
if we might be granted two days of personal leave in order to make the trip. The
superintendent replied that the school board, in determining valid reasons for
personal leave, did not include getting married. Since there was no such provision,
he went on, he would grant us the two days as medical leave - on the premise that
we were both clearly suffering form lovesickness!

"I know," I said, "but I've got the time and I'd like to spend some of it before it
stacks up." She mumbled something and gave me a disconnect.

Asked why he was giggling, one boy replied: "Oh, we know they make you tell us
those things."

"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

"You always stay so fresh after hearing patients all day."
The doctor replied, "I never listen."

Before the arrival of our son, my husband and I attended birthing classes at
the hospital. One day we toured the maternity ward. The instructor mentioned
that on the last evening of our stay we'd be given a complimentary dinner

the tour, I whispered to my husband, "Honey, I'm getting so excited."
"Me too," he replied. "I'm going to order the lobster."

With the tape deck going full blast, he didn't notice the rust bucket
that pulled around to pass until it sideswiped him. The yuppie pulled
to a stop.
"My car!" he cried. "My beautiful car!"
When a policeman came by, the yuppie told him about the accident.
His car was a wreck, and it didn't even have 50 miles on it.
"You've got more to worry about than your car," the officer replied.
"You need an ambulance. Your arm is badly injured."
The yuppie looked at his arm and cried, "My Rolex watch―my beautiful
Rolex!"

A couple whose passion had waned consulted a marriage counselor.
Several appointments later, after little success, the therapist suddenly
swept the woman into his arms and kissed her.
"You see," the counselor said to the husband, "this is the treatment
your wife needs―Monday, Thursday and Saturday, at least."
"Well," replied the husband, "I can bring her in here on Thursday and
Saturday, but Monday is my poker night."

As the deadline for a major project drew near at our publishing firm, both
our facsimile machines were put to the test. Secretaries were sending and
receiving messages, making last-minute corrections and additions.
One young assistant, holding a handful of new instructions to be distributed
to various departments, asked the office manager, "Whatever did we do before
fax machines?"
A man of few words, the manager replied, "We did things on time."

A new executive went to his first high-level meeting. At the end of the
conference table sat a fellow who, whenever a tough problem came up,
would say something like, "Well, it never rains, but it pours." or
"It's a long road that has no turning." or "If life gives you lemons,
then make lemonade."
"Exactly what does that guy do?" the new exec asked a colleague after
the meeting.
"He gives us our spirit of unity." was the reply. "We'd all like to
strangle him."

The dance at the local social club was in full swing as a couple who had
just met chatted with each other. The conversation inevitably turned to
their former marriages.
"I lost my husband at sea," said the woman.
"I'm so sorry," replied the man. "How did happen? Was he swimming?"
"Oh, it wasn't like that," she answered. "I lost him to a redhead on a
cruise ship."

"You're blocking the way, sir," said the usher to a man sprawled in the
aisle of a movie theater. "Please get up."
The man didn't move or reply. The usher called the manager over, who
said, "I must ask you to move."
Still the prone man didn't reply. So the manager called the police.
"Get up or I'll have to take you in," the officer said. "Where did
you come from anyway?"
The man stirred finally and said, "The balcony."

Three boys were bragging about their fathers. One said, "My dad's so fast
he can shoot an arrow and get to the target before the arrow does."
"That's nothing," the second boy replied. "My dad's so fast he can shoot
a deer at 500 yards and get to the deer before it falls."
"Big deal!" the third said. "My dad works for the government and gets off
work at 4:30, but he's so fast he gets home by 3:45."

One afternoon my younger sister, Connie, phoned me. "I have company coming
for dinner tomorrow," she said, "but I can't decide what to serve."
I gave her some simple recipes for a complete menu. Surprised that she
hadn't contacted our older sister, who is an excellent cook, I asked
Connie why.
"Because," she replied, "I knew that if you could make it, I could."

After directory assistance gave me my boyfriend's new telephone number,
I dialed him and got a woman. "Is Mike there?" I asked.
"He's in the shower," she responded.
"Please tell him his girlfriend phoned," I said and hung up.
When he didn't return the call, I dialed again. This time a man answered.
"This is Mike," he said.
"You're not my boyfriend!" I exclaimed.
"I know," he replied. "That's what I've been trying to tell my wife for
the past half-hour."

A girl doing her homework asked her father to explain the difference
between anger and exasperation. Going to the telephone, he dialed a
number and had his daughter listen. "Hello," he said to the man who
answered, "is Melvin there?"
"There's no one here named Melvin," was the reply. "Why don't you look
up numbers before you dial them?"
The father dialed the number again. "Hello, is Melvin there?" he asked.
"Now look!" the man yelled. "I just told you that there's no Melvin
here!" Then he slammed down the receiver.
"You see," the father explained, "that was anger. Now I'll show you
exasperation."
Again he dialed the number, and when a voice roared "Hello," he calmly
said. "This is Melvin. Has there been any calls for me?"

Lunching at a local eatery, I overheard a conversation between a mother
and daughter about plans for a wedding. The young woman protested that
she was the one being married and should be allowed to make the decisions.
"After all, Mother," the bride-to-be said, "you had your wedding 23 years ago."
"No, dear," came the reply. "That was my mother's wedding."

My sister, Sharon, and I are close, and that allows us to be honest
with each other. As I fidgeted in front of the mirror one evening
before a date, I remarked, "I'm fat."
"No, you're not," she scolded.
"My hair is awful."
"It's lovely."
"I've never looked worse," I whined.
"Yes, you have," she replied.

At the library, I told the reference librarian I needed information on an
automatic breadmaker. "It's a machine I'm interested in buying that kneads
dough and bakes bread for you, with just the touch of a few buttons,"
I explained.
The librarian shook her head sadly. "There is so much satisfaction in
kneading the dough and watching it rise," she replied. "Why must you young
people have a machine do everything for you? Why can't you do things the
old-fashioned way?"
"Can you just point me to the card catalogue?" I pleaded.
"Card catalogue?" She laughed. "Nobody uses a card catalogue anymore?
Let me take you to the computer index."

Traveling on a bus, I overheard a small boy asking his father numerous
questions, all of which were answered by, "I don't know, son."
Undaunted, the child persisted, with the same result.
Finally he asked, "Dad, do you mind me asking you all these questions?"
"Not at all, son" came the reply. "It's the only way to learn."

When I telephoned my sister's house from my office, her teen-age son
informed me she wasn't home. I knew from past experience that leaving
a message to return my call would be futile. "Do me a favor, Eric,"
I said. "Move the tea kettle from the stove to the coffee table.
When your mother asks what it's doing there, tell her I told you to do
it and she should call me to find out why."
Later on I had to leave the office, and I returned to find my wastebasket
perched on top of my desk. "Why is this here?" I asked the secretary.
"Your sister returned your call," she replied.

During my lunch hour, I made a purchase at a crowded bookstore and decided
to charge it. The two clerks were harried, and my transaction was traded
from one woman to another.
When I got outside, I noticed I had both the customer and merchant copies
of the charge form. I thought to myself that I'd just gotten a free book.
But by the time I sat down at my desk, my conscience was bothering me,
and I reached for the phone. When a clerk answered, I explained the
situation and told her I'd return their copy after work.
"Thank you," the woman replied. "I'm glad you called. You left your
charge card on the counter."

A newspaper photographer, my husband would often get home late with the
excuse "I had to shoot a car wreck," or "I had to shoot a football game."
Once, some unexpected company dropped by and asked how late my husband
would be. "I don't know," I replied, not intending to shock them.
"He has to shoot the governor."

As a fellow painter and I were hanging "Wet Paint" signs on a freshly
whitewashed hospital wall, a construction worker happened by.
Shaking his head, he remarked, "This wall is being torn down this
afternoon for the new elevator."
"No problem," my buddy replied. "It'll be dry by then."

As a free-lance writer working at home, I squeeze in my household chores
between assignments―not always with the best results. For example, there
was the day I overheard my sons talking as they came home from school.
"I'm starved," said one. "I hope there's something good for dinner."
Replied the other, "Well, do you smell anything in the oven or do you
hear the typewriter?"
