[比較] apt, likely, liable, prone
apt(자칫～하기 쉬운)와 likely(～함직한)는 to-부정사를 거느리는 경우 가까운 동의어가 된다.
likely는 어떤 모욕적인 말에 대해서 재치 있고 아주 날카로운 대답을 한 경우 다음처럼 말할 수 있다.
It was an apt answer; just the sort of thing that so-and-so would be likely to say.(경우에 꼭 맞는 대답이었다. 바로 아무개가 말함직한 대답이었다.)
He is apt to stammer when he is excited.(그는 흥분하면 말을 더듬기를 잘한다.)/ Cast iron is apt to break.(무쇠는 부러지기 쉽다.)
likely는 단순히 가능성을 나타내지만, 어떤 특수한 형편이나 환경에 쓰인다. 예를 들면, 11월 말경의 시카고의 날씨가 눈이 내릴 낌새를 보이는 경우, It is likely to snow today.라고 할 수 있다. 한편 apt는 Snow is apt to fall in Chicago in late November.처럼 일반적인 경향을 나타낸다.
또한 apt가 「잘하는, 재주가 있는」을 의미하는 경우에는 to-부정사를 거느리지 않고 at+동사의 -ing형을 취해서 He is apt at painting.처럼 쓰이기도 한다.
liable(자칫 ～하기 쉬운)은 부담이 될 일이거나 불리한 일을 당하기 쉬운 것을 나타낸다. liable과 apt는 뜻이 가깝기 때문에 서로 바뀌어 쓰이는 수가 있지만, liable은 주어에 대해서 부담 또는 불리함을 줄 가능성이 있는 경우에 사용되는 것이 원칙이다. We are liable to be overheard.(남이 우리의 말을 엿듣기 쉽다.)는 남이 엿듣는 것이 우리에게 불리한 것임을 표시한다.

prone(～하기 쉬운)은 거의 피할 수 없는 성질이나 성벽을 암시하며 반드시 to-부정사를 취하지 않는다.

Honor Box는 미국에서 쓰이는 말로 길거리에 있는 신문자동판매기를
뜻하는 말입니다. 원래 honor는 명예, 영광, 신의.. 그런 뜻이죠.
예를 들면 give one's word of honor..하면 명예를 걸고 맹세하다
다시 얘기해서 promise, swear 맹세하다와 같은 말입니다. 그리고
be on one's honor는 명예를 걸고 맹세한 상태를 말하죠. 그리고 어떤
일에 있어서 사람들이 정직하게 규칙을 준수하고 요금을 지불할 것을
믿고 어떠한 간섭도 받지 않는 제도, 즉 honor system(명예제도)라고
하죠. 예를 들어서 미국에는 honor system에 따라서 운영되는 가게들이
있는데 이러한 가게의 손님들은 필요한 물건을 구입한 다음에 비치해둔
상자안에 적정 금액을 넣고 그냥 가면 됩니다. 또는 우리나라에서도
요즘 동사무소에 가면 서류에 필요한 인지값을 알아서 비치된 바구니에
넣고 거스름돈을 챙겨가게 되어 있는데 이것도 honor system에 따른
지불 방식이라고 볼 수 있죠. 그래서 여기서 honor box에서 honor..하는
것은 신문과 관계가 있는 것이 아니고 요금을 지불하는 방식을 두고 하는
이야기입니다. 물론 신문 자동 판매기는 알맞은 금액을 넣지 않으면
신문이 나오지 않지만 어쨌든 남의 간섭없이 필요한 물건을 구입하고
요금을 낸다는 점에서 honor system에 의해서 운영이 된다고 볼수 있죠.

< 작품배경 >
1960년 대에 많은 사람들의 인기를 한몸에 받고 있던 쿠바출신
권투선수 Benny Perat는 어느날 시합 도중 불의의 일격을 맞고
쓰러져 병원으로 후송되었으나 결국 죽고 말았다.

이 사건은 당시 인기절정의 스포츠였던 권투 경기의 위험성에
대해 일반인들의 인식을 새롭게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라 생활을
꾸려나가기 위해 여러가지 어려운 직업에 종사하며 힘든 삶을
영위하고 있는 New York을 비롯한 대도시 빈민계층의 처절한
