For these same reasons, the average American would be surprised if a seated passenger offered to hold her bag while she was standing.
According to our American standards, we'd have to politely refuse such an offer, believing that it would unfairly inconvenience the sitter,
that it was meant as a polite gesture, and not a genuine offer.
Another point to consider is that Americans who live in big cities have keen senses of suspicion about other people.

I once worked in a department store's service booth, at which customers could buy tickets for concerts, sporting events and theatrical productions.
One day a woman approached the window where I was on duty.
Pushing several packages at me, she said, "I need three shirt boxes, one tie box and a box big enough for a casserole dish."
"You'll have to go to gift wrap for that," I explained politely.
Stepping back to better view the sign above me, the woman shouted, "Don't give me the runaround, young lady.
That sign says, 'Box Office,' and I want my boxes now!"

When comedian Joey Bishop was host of the "Tonight Show,"he was plagued
with autograph seekers. One day, when someone stopped him on the street
and asked if he was Joey Bishop, he smiled politely and replied, "No. I
only look like Joey Bishop."
Then, on second thought, he asked the woman if she was a fan of Joey Bishop's.
She smiled politely and replied, "No. I only look like a fan of Joey Bishop's."-and
walked away.

Hal : Huh? She quit.
Louanne: Why?
Hal : She was a very high-strung individual.
Louanne: What? Did she have a breakdown?
Hal : No, she quit before that.
One of the substitutes, she had a breakdown.

Louanne: Who are these kids, rejects from hell?
Hal : No. They're bright kids with little or no educational
skills and what we politely call a lot of social problems.
Louanne: Damn it, Griffith.
YOU COULD HAVE WARNED ME!
