The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

Three-quarters of the Earth's fresh water supply is still tied up in
glacial ice, a reservoir of untapped fresh water so immense that it
could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years. Floating on
the oceans every year are 7,659 trillion metric tons of ice encased in
10,000 icebergs that break away from the polar ice caps, more than
ninety percent of them from Antarctica.

Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth
to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is
formed when the sea itself freezes ; rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away
from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a
direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because
they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been
known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the
Atlantic Ocean.

From an evolutionary standpoint polar bears are quite new. The first
ani- mals that taxonomists recognize as bears go back about 20 million
years to the Miocene epoch. The size of a small dog, those early bears
gradually grew much larger and began living in caves; some were even
bigger than present- day bears. They spread to all the continents except
Australia and Antarctica.

During much of the two months, the mother bear sleeps, and although her heart
rate, respiration, and metaboilsm drop considerably, her sleep is not
hibernation. Her temperature stays constant and unlike true hibernators who need
several days to awaken, the mother polar bear can spring into action almost
instantly. In December or January her cubs are born-blind, hairless, a pound and
a half in weight, more fetus than young animal. From this moment on, few mothers
in nature are so devoted to their young.
