Our understanding of the past is based on written records, oral
traditions, and physical evidence, all of which must be interpreted.

Model is a reappearance of physical conditions being close to an actual state. Modeling is to try to explain the reaction observed by using various rules which are simple and understandable. These rules can be used to anticipate an experimental results including a given physical situations. Profitable model explains all viewpoints concerned with a given situation.
1) 텔레비전이 발달한 오늘날: today thank to the development of television; today when television is so much advanced
2) 가만히 앉아서 ~을 볼 수 있다: we can stay at home and watch ~
3) 외국의 동향: the trend of the world
We can stay home and see Mt. Namsan.
What a blessing it was (that) you weren't traveling on that train!
How much we owe to our parents!
ANS 1) What a blessing it is that today, thanks to the development of television, we can stay at home watching the activities of people and beauties of nature in foreign countries.
ANS 2) Today television has so much advanced, so we can stay home and learn the trends of the world as well as enjoy the beautiful nature of foreign lands.

→ 키가 더 커지다: grow taller than~
→ 보기에 즐겁다: be pleasant to see; nice to see
It would be better if~; I wish~<참고> 네가 내 곁에 있으면 좋겠다.
도: not only~ but (also) …; … as well as
(ANS) It is pleasant to see children growing taller than their parents. I wish their growth were not only physical but also mental.

Various officials receiving money in return for the granting of early exemption is
a somewhat classic story. There are other cases under investigation that feature
individuals being exempted after the very first preliminary physical checkup.

The government should enforce provisions governing early exemptions and the
physical examinations required for military service. Over the past 20 years,
provisions for physical examinations have changed 11 times.
It is clearly the responsibility of the Ministry of National Defence that the
absurdity surrounding the examinations does not reoccur.

A lack of appetite may be indicative of a major mental or physical disorder.

As we sat in the locker room after our heartbreaking loss, the ambient gloom was so thick that it seemed almost to have physical weight.

He had the calloused and grimy hands of a man who has done hard physical labor for many years.

It is only in superior mental powers, not in physical strength or acuity of the senses, that man surpasses other living things.

Looking at a lovely young girl, I feel a certain sense of sadness because I realize how ephemeral physical beauty is.

Overindulgence debilitates character as well as physical stamina.

We do not, indeed, know the exact relationship of our physical to our mental being, the extent to which our bodily condition causes our temperament or the exact process by which the brain makes the intangible thing called thought.

People who are interested in physical fitness need not spend hundreds of dollars on fancy exercise equipment or health club memberships.
Instead, they can get into good shape simply by climbing stairs.
Walking up and down two floors of stairs a day instead of riding an elevator will take off six pounds a year.
Climbing stairs is also good for the heart and can prevent heart attacks.

In North America, physical punishment by parents, as long as it is not severe, is seen as necessary discipline by many people.
However, sociological researchers and parents have insisted that we seriously consider stopping the physical punishment of children.
The most important reason is that all people have the right to protect themselves, and children are people, too.

Men who drink a lot of alcohol may have a higher chance of having children with physical or mental problems.
Doctors have long been aware that women alcoholics may give birth to defective babies.
However, scientists have recently discovered that alcoholism in men may be responsible for birth defects too.
Large quantities of alcohol may affect the quality of the father's genes.
This genetic change may cause a child to be born defective in some way.
Scientists are not sure how this happens.
But the statistics of the study seem to leave little doubt that it can happen.

Our experience of life comes through our five senses.
Each sense gives us specific and useful information about our physical world.
Imagine for a moment that you didn't have the sense of smell.
How much less rich your world would be.
In our traditional work culture we act as if we have only one sense, either visual or auditory.
Most of us are trained to use one of these two senses as our dominant sense, to the exclusion of our other senses.
Learning to use all your senses is a good way to enrich every moment of your life.

Roger now tours the country, speaking to groups about what it takes to be a winner, no matter who you are.
“The only difference between you and me is that you can see my handicap, but I can't see yours.
We all have them.
When people ask me how I've been able to overcome my physical handicaps, I tell them that I haven't overcome anything.
I've simply learned what I can't do ― such as play the piano or eat with chopsticks ― but more importantly, I've learned what I can do.
Then I do what I can with all my heart and soul.”

Laboratory experiments performed decades ago, are now considered unethical and inhumane.
Past experiments included keeping baby monkeys from being touched by their mothers.
Without touching, the babies became unemotional and failed to progress.
Deprived of their mothers, they did not explore, as young primates normally do.
For humans, insufficient touching in early years can have lifelong results.
Research indicates, in touching cultures, adult aggression is low, whereas in cultures where touch is limited, adult aggression is high.
Studies of a variety of cultures show a correspondence between high rates of physical affection in childhood and low rates of adult physical violence.

The experience is a familiar one to many in an emergency-room.
A patient who has been pronounced dead and unexpectedly recovers later describes what happened to him during those moments―sometimes hours―when his body showed no signs of life.
According to one repeated story, the patient feels himself rushing through a long, dark tunnel while noise rings in his ears.
Suddenly, he finds himself outside his own body, looking down with curious detachment at a medical team's efforts to revive him.
He hears what is said, notes what is happening but cannot communicate with anyone.
Soon, his attention is drawn to other presences in the room―spirits of dead relatives or friends―who communicate with him nonverbally.
Gradually, he is drawn to a vague ‘being of light.'
This being invites him to evaluate his life and shows him highlights of his past in panoramic vision.
The patient longs to stay with the being of light but is drawn back into his physical body and recovers.

Bill : School education should include the skills needed in adult life as well as the study of knowledge and information.
Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.
Children who haven't been given the chance to take part in physical activities can lose out on social skills when they get older.
On the other hand, if forced to take part in sports in school, they may well discover hidden talents.
Many famous sports people started their careers in this way.
Given this fact, everybody should take a sports class in school.

Overall good health is composed of five unique spheres of wellness:
the physical, the mental, the family and social, the spiritual, and the material.
Picture the Olympic symbol with five interlocking rings.
Like the Olympic rings, the five spheres of wellness overlap and interact.
Most of us have experienced the way the spheres affect another.
To live a happy life, you must have good health in all five spheres.
Knowing which areas need improvement and which are already healthy is the key to increasing your happiness.

Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
A distance of thirty feet made the difference between friends and strangers!

School location can influence children's physical health.
When new schools are built at a long distance from where their families live, children need to be driven to school,
and they are deprived of an opportunity for exercise.
On the other hand, if schools are located within walking or biking distance from where they live,
and if safe routes to school are provided, then children can make walking or biking a part of their daily lives,
establishing good habits that can last lifetime.
Besides, when new schools are built, it is considered whether the places where new schools will be built provide plenty of light and fresh air.

side the studio.
This enables the film makers to use actual physical landscape as the scenery.
If the movie calls for rivers, mountains, or jungles,
it may be cheaper to film in real places than to build imitation scenery.

Although lie detectors are being used by governments and police departments that want guaranteed ways of detecting the truth,
the results are not always accurate.
Their aim is to measure bodily changes that contradict what a person says.
A machine, called ‘polygraph machine,' records changes in heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and the electrical activity of the skin.
In the first part of the test, you are electrically connected to the machine and asked a few neutral questions.
Your physical reactions serve as the standard.
Then you are asked a few critical questions among the neutral ones.
The assumption is that if you are guilty, your body will reveal the truth, even if you try to deny it.

Tales from the past generally associate heroism with physical strength and raw courage in the face of danger.
Recently, however, new definitions of heroism and new kinds of heroes have emerged.

I will say that banning the junk food and vending machines in schools is ridiculous.
Above all, junk food is not bad in itself.
In moderation junk food can be part of a healthy diet.
Students should be trusted to make decisions about their diet.
Schools should provide information about healthy eating, but leave the decisions up to the students.
Besides, the “obesity crisis” isn't the schools' fault, and there isn't much they can do to fix it, either.
Fat kids are the result of modern lifestyles that lack physical activities―the Internet, video games, 400+ channels on the TV, etc.
If parents are worried about having fat kids, they should motivate their kids to go out and exercise.

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.

More than 60 percent of adults do not perform a minimum 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily.
Worse, 25 percent are completely inactive.
This sedentary life style increases as we grow older and is even more common among women than men.
Some reports make clear that this widespread inactivity contributes to "premature death and unnecessary illness" for millions of people each year.
It's true that people can optimize their fitness by taking up moderate physical sports such as walking or jogging.
But it's not necessary to disrupt your hectic daily schedule by rushing off to a gym, swimming pool or jogging track.

The word, “globalization” came after in the early 90's after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The idealogical and physical barriers that prevented the spread of international commerce were all but gone.

Bad weather, poor road condition, and defects in cars do cause some accidents, but, generally, such circumstances appear to be of minor significance compared with the mental and physical condition of the driver.
And a recent research indicates that the driver's physical condition is of less importance than his personality and his emotional state.

Indeed, the latest research shows that laughter may have numerous benefits.
Laughter provides excellent exercise, may strengthen the immune system, muffle pain, lighten stress and improve circulation and breathing.
In theory, laughter could even prevent heart attacks and combat cancer.
You would never think that, in laughing, you are actually perpetuating an act of health.
Just think about the last time you laughed really hard ― a real fall-on-floor special. Remember?
Oh, you were some spectacle.
Your mouth twisted open.
With so much blood engorging the veins of your head and neck, your face turned red.
You doubled over, gasping, wheezing like some haywire accordion symphony.
Your stomach, chest and ribs ached.
Rendered speechless, you dribbled your vodka-and-tonic without shame.
Sounds like fun, yes?
A real life-extender, no?
Well, believe it or not, this mirth experience ― this volcanic physical event, this seizure, really ― was quite good for you.

The key to success, to mental and physical health, is adaptability.

We know and accept this fact or principle of process in the area of physical things, but to understand it in emotional areas, in human relations, and even in the area of personal character is less common and more difficult.

His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

Man is capable of various kinds of education.
He is possessed of physical, social, religious, intellectual and moral capabilities.
Each requires education.
The education of all makes him complete: the education of part only leaves him deficient.

After the fall of the medieval world view, we in the west suddenly became aware that we lived in a totally unknown universe.
In attempting to understand the nature of this universe we knew we had to somehow separate fact from superstition.
In this regard we scientists assumed a particular attitude known as scientific skepticism, which in effect demands solid evidence for any new assertion about how the world works.
Before we would believe anything, we wanted evidence that could be seen and grabbed with the hands.
Any idea that couldn't be proved in some physical way was systematically rejected.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity.
It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or, in winter, skating or skiing.
It may be a game of some kind―football, hockey, golf, or tennis.
It may be mountaineering.

What I believe is that our unspoken fears create blocks or crimps in the body's energy flow, and it's these blocks that ultimately result in problems.
The fears keep manifesting in ever-greater degrees until we deal with them.
Physical problems are the last step.
Ideally these blocks would be dealt with early, in a preventive way, before illness develops.

Exercise is beneficial to your heart.
A 22-year study was conducted by doctors in California.
They found that people who work at physical jobs experience fewer heart attacks than other people.

No matter how wonderful his other qualities may be, do not marry a man who has hit you, threatened you or humiliated you.
In fact, don't go out with him a second time.
Recognize the fact that he is hazardous to your emotional and physical health and avoid him like the plague.

If you ask most people to explain why they like someone when they first meet, they'll tell you it's because of the person's personality, intelligence, or sense of humor.
But they're probably wrong.
The characteristic that most impresses people when meeting for the first time is physical appearance.
Although it may seem unfair, attractive people are frequently preferred over less attractive ones.

Purely physical fatigue, provided it is not excessive, tends to be a cause of happiness; it leads to sound sleep and a good appetite and enhances the pleasures that are possible on holidays.
But when it is excessive it becomes a very grave evil.

Difficult as it may be in some instances to ascertain quite accurately whether an overworked man had perfectly sound bodily health to begin with, the facts remain, that the excessive exercise of the mental powers is injurious to bodily health, and that all intellectual labour proceeds upon a physical basis.
No man can safely forget this and act as if he were a pure spirit, superior to physical consideration.

It is possible that science may in principle describe the structure and
actions of man as a part of physical nature. It is clear, however, that man is
not thus completely accounted for. Left wholly out of consideration is the realm
of ideas and idealism, of understanding and emotion, that gives life its human
significance.

strung out : (slang) suffering from the physical or mental effects of addiction to a
narcotic drug.

Men are not equal in physical strength, intelligence, attractiveness, or health.
In these characteristics the law of nature is diversity.

The view of a knowledge of physical science as a means of 'getting on' is
unquestionable. There is no occupation whose pursuer will not find some knowledge of
science to be profitable.
* physical science: 자연과학.

The number of physical phenomena amenable to scientific explanation increases
with each passing decade, whereas our scientific knowledge of human conduct
remains relatively insignificant. The teachings of Aristotle concerning astronomy and
physics have long since been superseded, but we yet to replace his doctrines on
ethics.

Many boys and girls who achieve brilliant results at school seem to go to
pieces when they reach a university and, on the other hand, some pupils
with undistinguished school records seem to develop wonderfully on reaching
the more agreeable environment of a university.
The difference between the two groups may be explained in part by differences
in the rate and timing of the candidate's intellectual growth.
Intellectual development, like physical growth, proceeds in a series of
jerks rather than at a uniform pace.

The processes of creative activity display several striking features.
One of the most frequent is the occurrence of flashes of insight outside
the hours of regular work, during periods of physical activity or at odd
moments of relaxation. So familiar is this phenomenon that many have
taken advantage of it.
Haydn, the great musician, says, "When my work does not advance, I
retire into the chapel and say a prayer; immediately ideas come to me."
Many, like Hamilton, have found that walking encourages the appearance
of ideas.
Many persons devoted to creative work have carried scraps of paper with
them everywhere so that nothing of the precious flashes of revelation
may be lost.

A buddy and I frequently take long walks together. Because he is blind,
I describe to him the interesting sights and people that we pass along
the way.
One day I spotted an exceptionally beautiful woman walking toward us,
and I begun to describe her physical attributes. As the young woman
passed by, I turned to watch so that I could give a complete report
and I bumped hard into a light pole. My friend heard the crash and
stopped. "You walked right into a pole." he said in amazement.
Embarrassed, I sheepishly replied, "Right."
My friend grinned. "Here,"
he said, "you had better take my arm before you hurt yourself."

What we desperately need is a worldwide movement for responsible technology.
First, we must submit new technology to a set of severe environmental tests
before we release it in our midst, so that we may stop adding to pollution,
noise and filth.
Second, and much more complexed, we must question the long-term impact of
a technical innovation on the social, cultural and physiological
surroundings, as well as on the physical environment.

Many of us, however, would overlook the overwhelming changes taking place
in one of our most vital systems, the physical environment.

Scientists demonstrate that our physical environment is shifting beneath
us with stunning speed and unpredictability.

The local fitness center offers a comprehensive physical examination which will provide useful information to make your workout more effective.

Final candidates will be required to complete an application for employment, and pass a physical exam prior to their first day of work.

The emigrants have endured physical and mental pain.

Some people change their eating patterns to meet the needs of different
situations. They have certain ideas about which food will increase their
athletic ability, help them lose weight, or put them in the mood for
romance. For example, these people choose fruit and vegetables to give
them strength for physical activity. They choose foods rich in fiber,
such as bread and cereal for breakfast, and salads for lunch to prepare
them for business appointments. For romantic dinners , however, they
choose shrimp and lobster.

Comfortable living conditions include not only chemical and physical
cleanliness, but also privacy, space, and quietness, Since these belong
to needs deeply rooted in human nature, the demand for them will increase
as we prosper. Unfortunately, however, these comforts will soon be
unavailable if developments are continued without paying due attention to
these needs. Before it is too late, strong actions should be taken so
that clean, private, spacious, and quiet dwellings can be guaranteed.

For centuries there has been a tendency for us to think of health only in
terms of physical bodies. The medical community did not look seriously at
the possibility that our mind could play an important role in illness and
healing. Recently, however, there has been a lot of research that proves
our mind affects illness and healing. A medical center reported that a
larger portion of their patients were people who did not have an organic
disease but were seeking psychological help.

Competition implies a set of rules that govern the conduct of the opposed
parties. In all cases, tricks and physical threats are prohibited. For
instance, when two soccer teams play against one another, each team tries
to score more points than the other. But points can be scored only in
limited number of right ways, and the game is governed by a set of rules.

Most scientists believe that by resting our bodies, we keep ourselves in
good physical condition. Any damage can be put right more quickly if
energy is not being used up doing other things. Injured animals certainly
spend more time asleep than usual while their wounds are healing. And
quite a few illnesses make us feel sleepy so that our body can get on
with curing us.

ntact with the natural world are not reserved just for
the artists. They are available to anyone who will place himself under
the influence of a lonely mountain top or the stillness of a forest. I
believe natural beauty has a necessary place in the spiritual development
of any individual or any society. I believe that whenever we destroy
beauty, or whenever we substitute something artificial for a natural
feature of the earth, we have slowed down man's spiritual growth.

According to psychologists, your physical appearance makes up 55% of a
first impression. The physical appearance includes facial expressions,
eye contact, and general appearance. The way you sound makes up 35% of
the first impression This includes how fast or slowly, loudly or softly
you speak, and your tone of voice. The actual words you use count for
only 10% . Therefore, it is safe to conclude that people form their first
impressions based mostly on how you look, then on how you speak
and least of all on what you say.

Elements of culture can be divided into two categories. The first is the
material culture, which is made up of all the physical objects that
people make and give meaning to. Books, clothing, and buildings are some
examples. We have a shared understanding of thief purpose and meanings.
In contrast, nonmaterial culture consists of human creations that are not
physical. Examples of nonmaterial culture are values and customs. Our
beliefs and the languages we speak are also part of our nonmaterial
culture.

My best school report was in the first grade from Mrs. Varulo. First,
she told my parents about my amazing physical energy: "Lisa never tires
of chasing and punching her classmates." Next, she praised my class
participation and active, questioning mind: "After every
instruction--even one as simple as 'Please take out your pencils'--Lisa
asks 'Why?'" Mrs. Varulo was so impressed with my vocabulary that she
commented, "I don't know where Lisa has picked up some of the words she
uses, certainly not in my classroom." Somehow she even knew I would
become a famous fiction-writer. "More than any other student I have ever
had," she wrote, "Lisa is a born liar."

Another physical benefit takes longer to achieve, but it is well worth
the effort, particularly for women. If done regularly and over a long
period of time, exercise can help prevent osteoporosis, a gradual process
of bone loss that occurs naturally as people age. This can be stopped by
regular exercise. It actually helps increase bone mass, and is said to be
the best preventive measure to avoid osteoporosis.

TPR(Total Physical Response)

Consumer goods allowed people to free themselves from their old, relatively secure but closed communities and enter the expressive individualism of a dynamic "mass" society.
Commodities gave people a sense of freedom.
The taste, feel, and comfort of manufactured objects, designed to maximize physical satisfaction and to intensify pleasure and excitement, created new understandings of personal freedom.

Hawking, who holds a prestigious Cambridge University chair once held by Sir Isaac Newton, also forecast that babies would be grown outside the womb in the next hundred years.
The British physicist said humans should improve their mental and physical capabilities and meet challenges posed by space travel.
"If we don't destroy ourselves in the next 100 years, I expect we will spread out to planets in the nearby solar system and then to nearby stars," Hawking said.

Until the discovery of the dinosaurs heart, fossilized bone served as the only physical evidence paleontologists could use to understand dinosaur metabolism.
Horner, for example, has studied microscopic features of bone tissue that can reflect the differences in growth rates between warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals.
Fast growth generally requires a speedy, warm-blooded metabolism.
And blood vessels create many more spongelike spaces in fast-growing bones than in slow-growing bones.
Horners studies of fossil bones suggest that even the most sluggish species of dinosaur had growth rates similar to those of warm-blooded birds.

Mother Teresa throughout all her life manifested the virtues of a genuinely liberated person: Faith, hope, courage, charity.
Mother Teresa possessed the kind of beauty that causes one to think of Christmas and of Easter and―ultimately ―of God.
It is not the kind of beauty celebrated by the Beautiful People of society who identify with wealth, popularity, social prestige and status symbols.
Nor is it the beauty exhibited by Playboy and Penthouse models, television and movie idols and contestants in Miss Universe pageants.
Rather, Mother Teresa possessed a moral and spiritual beauty―reflected in her face, eyes and good deeds―which far transcends mere physical beauty.
Mother Teresa was a living saint in heaven.

Korea's rapid economic development over the past couple of decades has changed the country in many ways.
The physical changes are the most obvious
―the neon signs, the glass tower skyscrapers and clean wide tree-lined boulevards, the modern hi-rise condominium complexes and crowded express ways.

But physical changes aside, the day-to-day Korean lifestyle is not what it used to be.
Is it the result of simple modernization or is Korea becoming "westernized", as traditionalists say?

Human rights are guaranteed from cradle to the grave, and students therefore are no exception, but to use physical punishment in schools is an education decision not a legal one in Korea.
The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development sent strange guidelines to schools concerning the size of cane and places to be hit, but this attempt to ban it legally is even stranger.

Everyone should know by now that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious physical and mental problems in the unborn child.
Most doctors have told their patients, television announcements have dramatized the dangers, and warning signs have gone up in restaurants and bars.
But too many mothers-to-be are not getting the message.
More than 50,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year with alcohol-related defects.
In about one-fourth of these cases, the damage―ranging from facial deformities to heart abnormalities―is severe enough to be classified as fetal alcohol syndrome.

How to push 1950 DA away from the Earth?and whether it will ever be necessary to do so―depends entirely on the exact physical nature of the asteroid.
We won't know for sure whether this asteroid is on a collision course until we can determine which way its north pole is pointing.

Physical devastation caused by invading armies, chiefly in the South and
border states, had to be repaired. This herculean task was ultimately
completed, but with discouraging slowness.

Still other evidence comes from cranial morphology: scientists think
that physical differences between the right and left sides of the
interior of the skull indicate subtle physical differences between the
two sides of the brain. The variation between the hemispheres
corresponds to which side of the body is used to perform specific
activities. Such studies, as well as studies of tool use, indicate that
right- or left-sided dominance is not exclusive to modern Homo sapiens.

Passive plant defense comprises physical and chemical barriers that
prevent entry of pathogens, such as bacteria, or render tissues
unpalatable or toxic to the invader. The external surfaces of plants, in
addition to being covered by an epidermis and a waxy cuticle, often
carry spiky hairs known as trichomes, which either prevent feeding by
insects or may even puncture and kill insect larvae. Other trichomes are
sticky and glandular and effectively trap and immobilize insects.

If the physical barriers of the plant are breached, then preformed
chemicals may inhibit or kill the intruder, and plant tissues contain a
diverse array of toxic or potentially toxic substances, such as resins,
tannins, glycosides, and alkaloids, many of which are highly effective
deterrents to insects that feed on plants.

The first firing hardens the pottery, and it is then ready to be glazed
and fired again. For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the
bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later burn off
in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the
clay surface, making any kind of decorative pattern that they want.
The results of five-year breast-cancer-detection project indicate that
mammo- graphy, or breast X-raying, can detect very early cancers in
younger women as well as in those over 50, according to a report in Ca,
a journal of the American Cancer Society. Mammography detected nearly 90
percent of the 3,557 cancers uncovered through the project, which
involved annual X-rays and physical examinations of more than 280,000
women aged 35 to 74. Moreover, many of the lesions revealed by
mammography were very small cancers, previously shown to be curable in
up to 95 percent of cases.
