In the phrase "die a thousand deaths", the word "death" is a cognate object.
"die a thousand deaths"라는 표현에서 'death'라는 단어는 동족목적어이다.

She is such a redoubtable foe of the trite phrase that her students tremble lest her wrath descend on them for using an overworked expression.
그녀는 진부한 표현을 쓰는데 대해 너무나도 가공할만한 적이라서 그녀의 학생들은 너무 치장한 표현을 썼다는 이유로 그녀의 노여움이 자신들에게 떨어지지 않을까 벌벌 떨었다.

The essential purport of our endless warnings and adjurations can be expressed in one simple phrase: "Don't take unnecessary risk".
우리의 끝없는 경고와 간청의 기본 취지는 "쓸데없는 모험을 하지 말라"라는 간단한 말로 표현될 수 있다.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

"Talking" birds such as parrots are capable of faithfully reproducing words and phrases of human language that they have heard; but when a parrot says "Polly wants a cracker," she may really want a ham sandwich or a drink of water or nothing at all.
앵무새처럼 말을 하는 새들은 그들이 들은 단어나 구문을 충실히 말할 수 있다.
그러나 앵무새가 "Polly가 크래커를 원한다." 고 말할 때, Polly는 실제로는 햄 샌드위치, 물 혹은 아무 것도 원치 않을 수 있다.
A bird that has learned to say "hello" or "goodbye" is as likely to use one as the other, regardless of whether people are arriving or departing.
"Hello" 혹은 "Good bye"를 배운 앵무새는, 사람들이 오는 것인지 가는 것인지 관계없이 "Hello"를 "Goodbye"로 또는 그 반대로 쓰기 쉽다.
The bird's utterances carry no meaning.
새의 말은 아무런 의미가 없다.
They are speaking neither English nor their own language when they sound like us.
그들의 말이 우리와 비슷하게 들리지만, 그들은 영어로 말하는 것도 아니고 자기들 언어로 말하는 것도 아니다.

And more important, proverbs are what a people―any people―believe, cherish, and teach their young.
그리고 더더욱 중요한 것은 속담은 어떤 민족이든 그들이 믿고 소중히 여기며, 또한 자식을 가르치는 그러한 것이다.
They are those gleanings of knowledge and experience with which the dead dower each generation of the living.
속담은 죽은 이들이 산 사람에게 부여하는 지혜와 경험의 집합체이다.
Shakespeare has a phrasing that runs: "Patch grief with proverbs."
세익스피어는 다음과 같은 말을 남겼다.
"속담은 슬픔을 수습한다."
I think we do more than that.
나는 우리는 더한 것을 할 수 있다고 생각한다.
We patch our ignorance and our impotence with them too.
우리는 속담으로 우리의 무지와 무기력함을 막을 수도 있다.

The social experiences and values of the old and the young have always been in conflict; if younger people did not question the advice and beliefs of their parents, little change or 'progress' would ever occur.
노인과 젊은이가 갖는 사회적 체험과 가치관은 항상 서로 대립해왔다.
만약 젊은이들이 자신들의 양친의 조언이나 신념에 의문을 갖지 않는다면, 변화도 '진보'도 거의 일어나지 않을 것이다.
But with the accelerating speed of change in modern times, the conflicts between members of different generations, or between those people anxious to adjust to change and those less inclined to do so, were in danger of becoming more harmful than helpful.
그러나 현대에서는 변화의 속도가 더해감에 따라, 다른 세대 사람들 사이의, 또는 변화에 적응하는 사람과 그다지 그렇게 하고싶어하지 않는 사람들 사이의, 대립은 유익하기 보다 유해하게 될 위험성에 있다.
Furthermore, the very phrase by which these conflicts are described, the 'generation gap', was becoming out of date.
더욱이, 이러한 대립을 기술하는 데에 사용되고 있는 '세대간의 단절'이라는 말 그것도, 시대에 뒤떨어지게 되었다.

But they have a certain power of acting without taking thought. In moments of
supreme crisis the whole nation can suddenly draw together and act upon a species
of instinct, really a code of conduct which is understood by almost everyone,
though never formulated. The phrase that Hitler coined for the Germans,
"a sleep-walking people," would have been better applied to the English.

Some writers who do not think clearly are inclined to suppose that their
thoughts have a significance greater than at first appears. It is
flattering to believe that they are too profound to be expressed so
clearly that all who run may read, and very naturally it does not
occur to such writers that the fault is with their own minds, which
have not the faculty of precise reflection. It is very easy to persuade
oneself that a phrase that one does not quite understand may mean a
great deal more than one realizes. Fools can always be found to discover
a hidden sense in them.

English grammar is very difficult and few writers have avoided making
mistakes in it. So heedful a writer as Henry James, for instance, on
occasion wrote so ungrammatically that a schoolmaster, finding such
errors in a schoolboy's essay, would be justly indignant. It is necessary
to know grammar, and it is better to write grammatically than not, but it
is well to remember that grammar is common speech formulated. Usage is
the only test. I prefer a phrase that is easy and unaffected to a phrase
that is grammatical.

There are rare instances when justice almost ceases to be an abstract
conception. Reward or punishment are meted out quite independent of
human interference. At such times, justice acts like a living force.
When we use a phrase like 'it serves him right', we are, in part,
admitting that a certain set of circumstances has enabled justice to
act of its own accord.
드물긴 하지만 정의라는 것이 구체적인 것으로 작용하는 때가 있다.
인간이 전혀 간여하지 않은 상태에서 상과 벌이 주어지는 것이다. 그럴 때
정의는 살아있는 강력한 존재처럼 작용한다. 우리가 "그것 참 잘됐다."라는
말을 할 때, 어떤 상황들이 합세하여 정의가 스스로 작용했다는 것을
어느 정도 인정하는 것이다.

*saying 속담; 격언 remark commonly made; well-known phrase:
"서두를수록 느리다."라는 말이 있다.
"More haste, less speed," as the saying goes.

abbreviate V. to shorten, especially words or phrases.
Frequency Modulation is abbreviated FM.

alliteration N. repetition of similar consonant sounds in a phrase.
"Sally sells sea shells by the seashore" is an alliteration.

이 책의 문구는 대체로 일상 생활 대화와 글속에 쓰인다.
The phrases in this book are, for the most part, used in writing as well as in daily conversation.

The term "law," as used in the phrases "a human law" and "a law of
nature," has two different meanings. Human laws had been considered
unchangeable in primitive times, but the Greek democracies made the
discovery that a community could consciously make new laws or change old
ones. This means that a human law is a set of rules that are valid only
for a certain number of people over a certain period of time. The term
"law" has a different meaning, however, when used to describe the
regularities of nature.

YOU CALL IT LOVE
sung by Karoline Kruger
-
You call it love
They're things I need to say
About the way I feel
When your arms are all around me
You call it love
Words I'd heard that sound so fine
Meaningless each time
Till you came and found me
See the ground is slowly turning dizzily, easily
Feel the way my heart is burning secretly inside of me
-
You call it love
All the wishes in my mind
soared into the skies
Were reflected in my own eyes
You say it's love
variations on a theme
Love was just a dream
Memories of past sighs
See you love is always round me
Everywhere in the air
New sensations now surround me
Ocean wide deep inside
-
You call it love
All my days past close to you
Grey skys turn to blue
And the sun shines all around me
You call it love
It's a phrase that people say
Each and every day
Real love is hard to find though
See the ground is slowly turning dizily easily
Feel the way my heart is burning from your touch secretly
-
You call it love
New I know it's much more
Being close to y

In our day technical solutions are always welcome.
현재 기술적 해결책은 항상 환영받는다.
Because of previous failures in prophecy, it takes courage to assert that a desired technical solution is not possible.
이전의 예언이 실패했기 때문에 그렇게도 원하는 기술적 해결책이 가능하지 않다고 주장하려면 어느 정도 용기가 필요하다.
Wiesner and York exhibited this courage; publishing in a science journal, they insisted that the solution to the problem was not to be found in the natural sciences.
Wiesner와 York는 이런 용기를 보여 주였다.
즉 과학 저널에 발표된 것처럼 그들은 그 문제에 대한 해결책이 자연과학에서는 나올 수 없다고 주장했다.
They cautiously qualified their statement with the phrase,“It is our considered professional judgement.??Whether they were right or not is not the concern of the present article.
Rather, the concern here is with the important concept of a class of human problems which can be called "no technical solution problems."
그들은 신중하게 다음과 같은 말로 자신들의 주장에 힘을 실었다.
“이것은 우리가 많은 연구를 통해 내린 전문적 판단입니다.” 그들이 옳은지 그른지는 이 논문의 관심거리가 아니다.
오히려, 관심은 ‘기술적 해결책이 없는 문제’라는 인간 문제들에 관한 중요한 개념에 있는 것이다.

This “cyber terrorism” is not only designed to slander and defame opponents, but also attacks their characters and threatens their properties and even family members.
이러한 사이버 테러는 상대진영의 명예를 훼손하고 비방할 뿐만 아니라 그들의 인성을 비방하고 심지어 그들의 가족들까지도 위협하고 있다.
Needless to say, such brutal and irresponsible behavior gravely endangers the democratic process of the nation and the culture of open discussion, even leading to the coining of a new phrase, “Internet power.”
말할 것도 없이 그러한 잔인하고 무책임한 행동은 국가의 민주적인 성장과 열린 토론 문화를 위협하고 심지어는 “인터넷 파워”라는 신조어를 만들어내기도 했다.

Customers who pay tolls in cash on highway tollgates will be provided with a sunshade for car engraved with promotional phrases for high-pass cards, and prizes will also be offered through a lottery among new high-pass card issuers.

이에 대해 윤 부총재는 "파월 의장이 기자회견에서 이는 기존 문구가 오역될 가능성이 있다고 판단해서 변경했다고 밝힌 만큼 Fed의 입장은 이전에 비해 크게 변한 것은 아니지 않나 생각한다"고 말했다.
In response, Vice President Yoon said, "I think the Fed's position has not changed significantly compared to earlier as much as Powell said at a press conference that he changed the existing phrase because he thought it could be misinterpreted."

우선 '새해 복 많이 받으세요!' 문구가 삽입된 설 명절 특별 봉투를 제작했다.

Moreover, the phrase, "We will act appropriately to maintain expansion of the economy," which has implied a rate cut so far, has been deleted from the FOMC statement, lowering the possibility of further cuts.
