green with envy라는 말은 남의 행운을 보고 질투를
느껴서 하는 표현이다.
green을 (싱싱하고 어린) 식물을 예상하지만 green이
라는 형용사가 사람을 수식하게 되면 의미는 좀 달라
진다. 창백하고, 병색이 돌고, 질투에 차 있거나, 두
렵고 악의에 차있는, 별로 좋지않은 그런 뜻을 나타
낸다.
특히, 이 질투의 색깔을 green으로 표현하는 경우가
많이 있는데, 이 질투에 가득찬 눈을 green eye 라고
하고 질투가 심한 이런 형용사는 green eyed. 이렇게
분사형으로 나타내고 질투라는 말의 악마라고 할때는
green monster라고 얘기한다.
영어의 이런표현은 그리스어에서 유래를 찾아볼수 있
는데 그들의 창백한 상태를 green(녹색)과 같다고 표
현한다. 우리는 질투나 두려움이나 놀라움이나 격한
감정의 상태를 표현할때 새파랗게 질리다. 질투의 불
꽃이 파랗게 타오르다라는 식으로 주로 파랗다라는
표현을 쓰는데 서양사람들 눈에는 그것이 초록색으로
보이는거 같다.

Reporter: Where did you get ideas for your fantasy movies?
Mr.Ray:Well, I had all the fears that a lot of kids have.
I was frightened of the dark, of the wind in the trees.
I imagined horrible monsters living in my bed.
Even Snow White gave me a nightmare.
But as I grew older, this kind of fear gradually changed to fascination.
This fascination gave me inspiration for my movies.
Reporter: How did you get interested in making movies?
Mr.Ray:My father had a movie camera.
He would take pictures of my family.
At twelve, I borrowed my father's camera and started making movies:
writing scripts for my family and filming family events.
That's how I started my first movie.
You know what? Actually, I didn't ever give that camera back to my father.

In a lake there once lived a scary monster.
His face was black, his belly blue, and his hands and feet were red.
He had giant tusks.
Whenever any animal came to drink water, the monster suddenly jumped up from the lake, drew it down by force, and swallowed it.
옛날 어느 호수에 무시무시한 괴물 하나가 살고 있었다.
그것은 까만 얼굴, 푸른 배, 그리고 붉은 손과 발을 지녔다.
그것은 엄청나게 큰 엄니를 가지고 있었다.
그 괴물은 어떤 동물이든지 물을 마시러 올 때면 언제나 호수로부터 솟아올라 강제로 그 동물을 끌어 내린 뒤 통째로 삼켜버렸다.
Once a troop of monkeys came to the lake, led by their king.
The monkeys were all thirsty.
The monster was very pleased at the thought of catching them for food.
But the monkey king noted that the footprints of various animals led to the lake but none led away from it.
He was suspicious and worried.
He gave strict orders that no one was to drink water from the lake until he gave the word.
So the monkeys now waited by the waters of the lake, impatiently thirsty.
Their discipline was good, however, and the king's orders were completely followed.
어느 날 원숭이 무리가 자신들의 왕의 지휘를 받으며 그 호수에 왔다.
원숭이들은 모두 목마른 상태였다.
괴물은 그 원숭이들을 먹이로 잡겠다는 생각을 하며 아주 흐뭇해했다.
하지만 원숭이 왕은 다양한 동물들의 발자국이 호수를 향하고 있었지만 호수에서 빠져나온 발자국은 하나도 없다는 것을 주목했다.
그는 이를 의심하며 걱정했다.
그는 자신이 지시를 내릴 때까지는 누구도 호수의 물을 마셔서는 안 된다는 엄한 명령을 내렸다.
따라서 원숭이들은 참을 수 없을 정도로 갈증을 느끼며 호숫가 주변에서 기다렸다.
하지만 그들은 기강이 잘 잡혀있어서 왕의 명령을 철저히 따랐다.
Hours passed.
Everything was still and quiet.
It was a battle of wills between the monkey king and the unknown monster whose existence the former had assumed.
It was the monster who gave way first.
Unable to restrain his greed, he popped up from the center of the lake and said in a loud voice,
“Why don't you drink? I am the guardian of this lake.
I tell you that the water is pure, refreshing, cool, and sweet.
Drink, my friends, drink.”
No, my good fellow,” replied the king, “your wishes will not be fulfilled in the way that you want.”
“What do you mean?” asked the monster.
“You won't be able to catch us.
We will drink the water of the lake and yet not fall into your trap.”
“How will you do that?” shouted the monster, amused at the monkey king's boldness.
“You will see,” replied the monkey king.
The monkeys then plucked long reeds from the marshes and drank the water through the reeds.
Frustrated, the monster disappeared back into the water.
The monkey king's cautious approach kept his troop from falling a prey to the cruel being's plot.
몇 시간이 지났다.
아무런 움직임도 없이 고요했다.
그것은 원숭이 왕과 그가 존재하고 있다고 짐작한 미지의 괴물간의 의지력 싸움이었다.
먼저 포기한 것은 괴물이었다.
자신의 탐욕을 억누를 수 없었던 그 괴물은 호수 가운데에서 불쑥 나타나며 큰 소리로 말했다.
“왜 물을 마시지 않는가? 나는 이 호수의 수호자이다.
너희들에게 말하건대 이 물은 깨끗하고 시원하며 차갑고 달콤하다.
이보게들, 이 물을 마시게.”
이에 원숭이 왕은 대답했다.
“이보게, 우린 그럴 수 없네.
자네가 바라는 바는 뜻대로 이루어지지 않을 걸세.”
“그 말은 무슨 뜻인가?”라고 괴물은 물었다.
“자네는 우리를 잡을 수 없다는 말이네.
우린 호수의 물을 마시지만 자네의 함정에 빠지진 않을 걸세.”
“네가 어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있단 말이냐?”라고 원숭이 왕의 대담함을 재미있게 여기며 괴물이 소리쳤다.
“잘 보게.”라고 원숭이 왕은 대답했다.
그러자 원숭이들은 습지에서 긴 갈대를 뽑아 그 갈대로 물을 빨아 마셨다.
낙담한 괴물은 물속으로 사라졌다.
원숭이 왕의 조심스런 접근 때문에 원숭이 무리는 잔인한 자의 계략에 희생되지 않았던 것이다.
믿어지지 않겠지만,덤불에서 괴물이 나타났어.
