Knock on wood = Hope that misfortune will not happen
▶유래 : from the tale of wily Wood Sprites

No opportunity knocks twice
No lightning strikes twice란
Misfortunes never come single 또는
One misfortune rides upon another's back란 말도 있는데

We probably all have discovered, at some time or another in our lives, the treasure hidden beneath a seeming misfortune, the silver lining behind the cloud, the blessing in disguise.

Whom, then, do I call educated, since I exclude the arts and sciences and specialties?
First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action;
next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all with whom they associate, tolerating easily and good-naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable to their associates as it is possible to be;
furthermore, those who hold their pleasure always under control and are not duly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature;
finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by successes and do not desert their true selves and become arrogant, but hold their ground steadfastly as intelligent men, not rejoicing in the good things which have come to them through chance rather than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs from their birth.
Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them―these, I contend, are wise and complete men, possessed of all the virtues.

Pity is often a perception of our own misfortunes in those of others; it is shrewd
foresight of the evils into which we may fall. We help others in order to engage
them to help us in similar circumstances; and the services we render them are, to
speak properly, a good we do ourselves by anticipation.

When some misfortune threatens, consider seriously and deliberately what
is the very worst that could possibly happen. Having looked this possible
misfortune in the face, give yourself reasons for thinking that after all
it would be no such very terrible disaster. Such reasons always exist,
since at the worst nothing that happens to oneself has any cosmic
importance. When you have looked for some time steadily at the worst
possibility and have said to yourself with real conviction, "Well, after
all, that would not matter so very much," you will find that your worry
diminishes to a quite extraordinary extent.

One of the symptoms of approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that
one's work is terribly important and that to take a holiday would bring
all kinds of disaster. If I were a medical man, I would prescribe a
holiday to any patient who considered his work important. The nervous
breakdown which appears to be produced by the work is, in fact, in
every case that I have ever known of personally, produced by some
emotional trouble from which the patient attempts to escape by means
of his work. He is loath to give up his work because, if he does so,
he will no longer have anything to distract him from the thoughts of
his misfortune, whatever it may be.

There is the man who has a genuine grievance, founded upon actual fact,
but who generalizes in the light of his experience and arrives at the
conclusion that his own misfortune affords the key to the universe;
he discovers, let us say, some scandal about the Secret Service which
it is to the interest of the Government to keep dark. He can obtain
hardly any publicity for his discovery, and the most apparently
high-minded men refuse to lift a finger to remedy the evil which fills
him with indignation. So far the facts are as he says they are.
But his rebuffs have made such an impression upon him that he believes
all powerful men to be occupied wholly and solely in covering up the
crimes to which they owe their power.

*It serves him right.
His failure, misfortune, etc. is deserved; he does not merit sympathy.

We cannot study the lives of great men without noticing how often an
apparent misfortune was for them an exceedingly fortunate thing.
If Walter Scott had not been crippled by disease as a child, he might
not have stayed in the country that made him a great poet and a romancer.
One hears of so many instances, indeed, of bad luck turning into good
that one sometimes wonders whether one ought not to be sorry for the
people to whom the apparently unlucky things happen.

*be cursed with …때문에 시달리다 suffer misfortune; trouble because of:
He was cursed with his idle daughters.

The orphan wept with grief over his misfortune.

He has had a series of misfortunes.

misfortune 불운

For their own part, the related law enforcement authorities need to double their efforts to locate those who spread groundless defamatory rumors and take legal measures against them.
If left unchecked, the current evil trend will only amplify the antagonism and conflicts between regions and classes as well as cause national misfortune and hamper the development of democracy in this country.

She had the kindness to show me the way.
He had the misfortune to lose his passport.

Yesterday, my friend and I took Ben shopping with us, so he
could understand the appeal. I explained everything to him
the night before, but shopping day was a *disaster. He was
not up at 4:30 to be first in line. He *poked around and
refused to wear the shopping *attire I had given him _
comfortable shoes and a backpack. In the shops, he refused to
*cooperate. His critical attitude attracted embarrassing
attention from other shoppers. *To top it all off, when I
made a purchase, he would throw up his arms and *scream.
"Run, Visa Card! Run!"
▲ disaster: a sudden or great misfortune: 재난, 참사

▲ to top it all: 게다가, 더욱이

There are also many people who feel negative about the short selling system because it basically makes money based on other people's misfortunes.

However, a stroke of good luck in the midst of misfortune, the baby was born in its good health, and the whole family members could not hide their joy despite the sudden news.
