[比較] permission, consent, permit, leave
ex) Since she was only twenty, she had to get her parents' permission to marry.

ex) He had to get a building permit from the city zoning commission.
leave는 미국에서는 일을 쉬는 허가(permission to be absent from duty)라는 특별한 뜻으로 쓰인다.
ex) He got the usual two weeks' leave before going overseas.
ex) May I have leave to speak?

[比較] wedding, marriage, nuptials, matrimony, wedlock
Will you dance at my wedding?/ A thousand invitations to the wedding were sent out?
They announced the marriage of their daughter./ Marriage is a basic social institution.
Theirs was a long and happy marriage.
Millions of Britons bought newspapers to read of the royal nuptials.
be joined in bonds of holy matrimony
Children born out of wedlock are children of parents who are not legally married.

Actress Julia Roberts said, “What's nice about my dating life is that I don't have to leave my house.
All I have to do is reading the paper: I'm marrying Richard Gere and dating Daniel Day-Lewis.”
What makes Roberts such a popular person in both regular and gossip papers is the type of movie character that she plays.
The public loves her characters and her acting.
One of the most widely acclaimed movies where she has starred is Pretty Woman.

The most important lessons can’t be taught.
No one can teach us how to get along with others or how to have self-respect.
As we grow from children into teenagers, no one can teach us how to deal with peer pressure.
As we enter adult life, no one can teach us how to fall in love and get married.
As we enter into new stages in our lives, the advice of adults can be very helpful because they have already had similar experiences.
But experiencing our own triumphs and disasters is really the only way to learn how to deal with life.

Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
A distance of thirty feet made the difference between friends and strangers!

A twelfth-century couple, Heloise and Abelard, is often mentioned when romantic love becomes the subject of scholarly discussion.
When they met, Heloise was the niece of a wealthy scholar.
Abelard was the most famous teacher in France.
Older and vastly more educated, Abelard became the girl's tutor.
The two fell in love.
When Heloise bore a son, they married in secret.
The couple did not want Abelard's career to be hurt by scandal.
However, when Heloise's uncle found out what happened, he forced the girl to become a nun.

If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
“My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.

No wise person will marry for beauty mainly.
It may exercise a powerful attraction in the first place, but it is found to be of comparatively little consequence afterwards.

To marry a handsome figure without character, fine features unbeautified by sentiment or good nature, is the most deplorable of mistakes.
As even the finest landscape, seen daily, becomes monotonous, so does the most beautiful face, unless a beautiful nature shines through it.
The beauty of today becomes commonplace tomorrow.
Whereas goodness, displayed through the most ordinary features, is perennially lovely.
This kind of beauty improves with age, and time ripens rather than destroys it.

You can be married and still be plenty lonely, especially when your partner is not there for you.

Second, love can be killed.
It can be chipped away, piece by piece, until there is nothing left.

Shuster is part of a growing number of Americans staying single longer.
Shuster
According to Census Bureau figures, the number of men and women ages 30 to 44 who have never married more than doubled during the last 20 years.
Sociologists attribute the increase to the rise in financial independence of women, the growing acceptance of alternative lifestyle choices and the downfall of the economy ― which provides less incentive to get married.

But, for many people, the decision to remain unwed comes down to one big advantage: freedom.

He is financially very well-off and wants to marry me.
He treats me very well and cares for my children.
Abby, do you think marriage between a 52-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman could ever work out?
I like him a lot, but I am not what you would call madly in love with him.
I was madly in love with my first two husbands, and they both treated me like dirt.
I haven't made any promises yet, and this man is not pressuring me, but I need your advice.
What do you think it takes to make a marriage work ?

be married (to) ...
get married (to) ...

It is one of the greatest tragedies in life for an angel of a girl to be
married to a beast of a man.

Agatha Christie, the famous mystery writer, was asked how she liked being
married to an archaeologist.
"An archaeologist is the best husband any woman can have," she replied. "The
older she gets, the more interest he has in her."

My husband and I first met while we were theachers in Idaho. We planned to be
married during spring vacation in my hometown in New Mexico. Since we had such
a long distance to drive, we wrote a letter to the superintendent of schools asking
if we might be granted two days of personal leave in order to make the trip. The
superintendent replied that the school board, in determining valid reasons for
personal leave, did not include getting married. Since there was no such provision,
he went on, he would grant us the two days as medical leave - on the premise that
we were both clearly suffering form lovesickness!

I noticed that his left hand had been cut off at the wrist.
I asked him if the loss of that hand bothered him.
He said, "Oh, no. I hardly ever think about it. I am not married; and the
only time I ever think about it is when I try to thread a needle."

The Kennedys have always liked touch football. Even in later life, those who
married into the family had to be good players.

DEAR ABBY : I'm glad you advised that 15-year-old girl against dating boys
of a different religion if she had no intentions of marrying out of her faith.
I was raised in a strict Baptist home, but dated boys I knew I could not marry. I
fell deeply in love with a Jewish boy, but I married someone else. That was over 30
years ago, and I still dream of my first love. Now I wish I had either married him
or not set myself up to fall in love with a man I could not marry.
I REMEMBER MOREY

At the age of 42 he married; seven years later he divorced.

My mother-in-law and I were discussing a promotion we hoped my husband,
Jerry, would get. "He's one of the best people they have," she said.
"He works hard, is dependable and doesn't get sick."
"That's right," I agreed. "During the two years we've been married,
he has been ill only twice."
"And Jerry was never sick before that!" my mother-in-law added.

Lunching at a local eatery, I overheard a conversation between a mother
and daughter about plans for a wedding. The young woman protested that
she was the one being married and should be allowed to make the decisions.
"After all, Mother," the bride-to-be said, "you had your wedding 23 years ago."
"No, dear," came the reply. "That was my mother's wedding."

The unmarried young woman of the professional classes is able nowadays,
provided she is not below the average in intelligence and attractiveness,
to enjoy a thoroughly agreeable life so long as she can keep free from
the desire for children.
But if this desire overwhelms her, she is compelled to marry and almost
certainly to lose her job. She sinks to a much lower level of comfort
than that to which she has been accustomed, since her husband's income
is very likely no larger than that which she was previously earning
and has to provide for a family instead of only a single woman.
After having enjoyed independence, she finds it annoying to have to look
to another for every penny of necessary expenditure. For all these reasons
such women hesitate to embark upon maternity.

*fiance 약혼자, 결혼을 약속한 남자 the person one is going to marry:
He's the fiance of Miss Jones.

He was forty when he married my mother, who was more than twenty years
younger. She was a very beautiful woman and he was a very ugly man.
I have been told that they were known in the Paris of that time as
Beauty and the Beast. One of her great friends was Lady Anglesey,
an American woman who died at an advanced age not very long ago, and
she told me that she had once said to my mother: "You're so beautiful
and there are so many people in love with you, why are you faithful
to that ugly little man you've married?"
And my mother answered: "He never hurts my feelings."

*romance 로망스; 소설 a story of love, adventure, mystery, etc., often set in a distant time or place:
a romance about a king who married a beggar girl

She was writing to her son, congratulating him on his engagement.
"My darling boy," wrote the mother.
"What glorious news! It has long been our greatest wish that you should
marry some good woman. A good woman is heaven's most precious gift to man.
She brings out all the best in him and helps him to suppress all that
is evil."
Then there was a postscript in a different handwriting: "Your mother
has gone for a stamp. Keep single!"

*engagement 약혼 an agreement to marry:
Have you heard that John has broken off his engagement to Mary?

A man was telling one of his friends the secret of his contented married
life. "My wife makes all the small decisions," he explained, "and I make
all the big ones, so we never interfere in each other's business and
never get annoyed with each other. We have no complaints and no arguments."
"That sounds reasonable." answered his friend sympathetically.
"And what sort of decisions does your wife make?"
"Well," answered the man. "she decides what jobs I apply for, what sort
of house we live in, what furniture we have, where we go for our holidays,
and things like that."
His friend was surprised. "Oh?" he said. "And what do you consider
important decisions then?"
"Well," answered the man, "I decide who should be Prime Minister,
what we should do about the atom bomb, and things like that."

"Because we live in the modern age," says a comedian, "women now have
many choices: They can have a job or not have a job. They can be married
or unmarried, married with children, married with children and a job,
unmarried with children and a job, unmarried with children and no job,
unmarried with children who themselves have jobs, have a job and an
au pair who has children…."
"Men, unfortunately, have the same choice we've always had: we can
