A politician divides mankind into two classes: tools and enemies.

curious about the origin of mankind

the human race (=the mankind) 인간

→ 문명의 파괴는 말할 것 없고 인류의 파멸이 올 것이다: the result would be the extermination of mankind itself, let alone the destruction of civilization; it would mean the extinction of the human race, not to speak of the destruction of civilization
→ A는 물론 B도: not only A but (also) B; B as well as A로도 할 수 있지만, let alone; to say nothing of; not to say anything of; not to mention; not to speak of 등을 사용해 옮길 수 있음.
→ 그는 사치품이야 말할 것도 없고 필수품조차 살 여유가 없다. ex) He cannot afford necessaries, let alone (or to say nothing of; not to mention) luxuries.
→ 제 3차 세계 대전: a Third World War 또는 another world war임.
→ 발발한다면: 미래에 대한 가정이므로, were to break out; should break out 라고 함.
(ANS 1) If a Third World War should break out, it would mean the extermination of the human race, not to speak of the destruction of civilization.
(ANS 2) If another world war were to break out, the result would be the extermination of mankind itself, let alone the destruction of civilization.

[比較] mankind, humanity, humankind, man, men
in the whole history of mankind
study the evolution of man
the first attempt of men to settle disputes through reason rather than violence.

misanthrope 염세가 (one who hates mankind)
We thought the hermit was a misanthrope because he shunned our society.

for the peace of all mankind : 제발∼
ex. For the peace of all mankind, close the bed room door.

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

All of the goals of space science share a common end.
It is to learn more about the earth.
Only by exploring other bodies in the skies can we answer some of the questions we have about the earth.
The things we have learned about other planets have helped us to know our own planet better.
It is important to understand the forces that control the earth.
With that understanding we may be able to manage those forces.
This control would help mankind.

I had always thought of hurricanes as something mankind could do without.
But recently I learned that they are necessary to maintain a balance in nature.
These tropical storms, with winds up to 150 miles an hour, accompanied by heavy rains, glaring lightning, and roaring thunder, can be devastating.
Yet scientists tell us they are very valuable.
They scatter a large percentage of the oppressive heat which builds up at the equator, and they bring enough rainfall in North and South America.
Therefore, scientists no longer try to prevent them from being formed.
They are convinced that hurricanes do more good than harm.

On Education
I consider ignorance the primary enemy of mankind.
The human mind is not only self-destructive but naturally stupid.
Self-ignorance is its normal condition.

It can be said that any scientist of any age who wants to make important
discoveries must study important problems. Dull problems yield dull answers. It is not
enough that a problem should be interesting. A problem must be such that it matters what
the answer is - whether to science generally or to mankind.

It took mankind untold ages to get out of its barbarous state.

The effect of this use of fossil fuels will be a drier Midwest climate
with drastic effects on agriculture, commerce, and recreation.
"After overpopulation and the shortage of food, this is probably the most
serious problem mankind faces," Professor Bridges said.

*humanity 인류 the human race; mankind:
인류에 대한 범죄 crimes against humanity

Because man is a social being he cares for the judgment of his fellows.
He is gratified by praise and hurt by blame. To possess a good reputation
with family, neighbors, friends, to avoid social condemnation is
undoubtedly a motive for good conduct.
Pliny stated the case with substantial truth, though perhaps with some
exaggeration, when he said, "How few there are who preserve the same
delicacy of conduct in secret as when exposed to the view of the world!"
The truth is, the generality of mankind stand in awe of public opinion,
while conscience is feared only by the few. A saying of the Arabs puts
the point with cynical brevity: "In a town where you know no one do
whatever you like."

The plane was carrying three passengers―a Boy Scout, a bishop and a
brilliant statesman―when the pilot warned of an impending crash.
"Unfortunately," the pilot said, "we have only three parachutes.
I must have one," said the brilliant statesman, "because I have a
great contribution to make for mankind."
He jumped out after the pilot.
The bishop turned to the Scout.
"My son," he said, "I've had a long life. Yours lies ahead. Take
the last parachute―and good luck!"
"Don't worry, Your Grace," said the Scout. "We've got two parachutes.
The brilliant statesman took my knapsack."

The atomic bomb is a grave threat to mankind.

"Will mankind survive?" "Who knows?" The question I want to put is more
searching : Who cares? It is clear that most of us today do not care. How
many of us would be willing to give up some minor convenience in the hope
that this might extend the life of man on earth by a hundred years?
Suppose we knew with certainty that mankind could not survive a thousand
years unless we gave up our wasteful diet of meat, abandoned all pleasure
driving, and cut back on every use of energy. Would we care enough for
our children to pay the price of their survival?

Despite these similarities with other creatures, however, the evolution
of mankind differs from that of other species. Our evolution had led to a
very generalized capability. But, in other species, evolution had led to
a specialization in their ability. For example, the giraffe has adapted
to grazing on treetops but it is specialized and thus restricted to
grazing on trees. Only with great difficulty can it bend down to graze on
the ground.

Money is merely a convenient medium of exchange - nothing more and
nothing less. Before its invention, mankind used the barter system of
trading objects for other objects or services. One pig might have been
worth five chickens in trade ; a week's labor might have yielded one
goat, and so on. Can you imagine the problems of carrying around enough
livestock or grain to do one's weekly shopping? The barter system worked
well until people started to move about more and to greater distances.

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life:
the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy―ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.
I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness―that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss.
I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.

Mankind, ever since there have been civilized communities, have been confronted with problems of two different kinds.
On the one hand, there has been the problem of mastering natural forces; mankind have tried to acquire the knowledge and skill required to produce tools and weapons and to encourage nature in the production of useful animals and plants.
This problem, in the modern world, is dealt with by science and scientific technique, and experience has shown that in order to deal with it adequately it is necessary to train a large number of rather narrow specialists.
But there is a second problem, less precise, and by some mistakenly regarded as unimportant I mean the problem of how best to utilize our command over the forces of nature.
This includes such burning issues as democracy versus dictatorship, capitalism versus socialism, free speculation versus authoritarian dogma.
On such issues the laboratory can give no decisive guidance.
The kind of knowledge that gives most help in solving such problems a wide survey of human life as they appear in history.

Yet things would be without this education, and mankind cannot be made by halves.
Under existing conditions a man left to himself from birth would be more of a monster than the rest.
Prejudice, authority, necessity, example, all the social conditions into which we are plunged, would stifle nature in him and put nothing in her place.
She would be like a sapling chance sown in the midst of the highway, bent hither and thither and soon crushed by the passers-by.

I believe the reflective portion of mankind is divided into two groups:
those who are interested in people and care about them; and those who are interested in ideas.
The first group forms the pragmatists and tends to make the best statesmen.
The second is the intellectuals;
and if their attachment to ideas is passionate, and not only passionate but programmatic, they are almost certain to abuse whatever power they acquire.
For, instead of allowing their ideas of government to emerge from people, shaped by observation of how people actually behave and what they really desire, intellectuals reverse the process, deducing their ideas first from principle and then seeking to impose them on living men and women.

Discovered a mere one hundred fifty years ago and manufactured commercially
half that long, aluminum today ranks behind only iron and steel among metels
serving mankind. The key to its popularity is its increadible versatility. The
same metal that makes kitchen foil serves as armor for battle field tanks. The
material of lawn chairs baseball bats also forms the vital parts of air and
space vehicles-most of their skeletons, their skins, even the rivets that bind
them together.

For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger.
Even if we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, however, our work to keep peace will not be done.
It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war.
To do this, we need to persuade mankind to settle international conflicts in a new way, not by force, but by agreement in accordance with principles of law.

"Trust" was the most powerful weapon for mankind to overwhelm other species.

Now transmission by the virus can be not just a simple problem, but a key agenda that has a great impact on the fate of mankind along with climate change and nuclear proliferation.
