Ch'usok is also called Chungch'ujol. This literally means
"midautumn" day.
추석은 '중추절'이라고도 불리는데 이는 '가을의 한가운데 날'
이라는 뜻이지요.
Ch'usok is a period where separated family members gather
to discuss their lives while enjoying the newly harvested
grains and fruits.
추석에는 흩어져 살던 가족들이 모두 한자리에 모요 각자의
생활에 대해서 얘기하면 새로이 수확한 곡식들과 과일들을
즐깁니다.
The most important activity done at Ch'usok is to give
thanks to ancestors and also to give thanks to Mother nature
for providing a bountiful harvest.
그러나 추석날 하는 가장 중요한 일은 조상님들과 풍요로운
곡식을 수확할 수 있게 한 자연에 감사를 표하는 일이지요.

is half-moon shaped and filled with stuffing made from
sesame seed and sugar. The dish is always steamed on top
of pine needles.

추석과 관련된 여러 가지 게임이나 춤들이 있는데 과거에는 이
러한 활동들이 이웃간의 공동 활동으로 행해졌습니다.

hold hands and spin to the rhythm of the songs. In one sense,
it can be compared to square dancing.
추석의 가장 대표적인 놀이에 '강강수월래'라는 춤이 있는데 이
것은 노래를 부르면서 그 노래의 리듬에 맞추어 사람들끼리 손
을 잡고 원을 그리면서 추는 춤이지요. 어떤 면으로는 미국의
'스퀘어 댄스'와 비교될 수 있습니다.
The contents of the song, kanggangsuwollae is about
happiness, love and longevity.

가사로 이루어져 있지요.
씨름 much like wrestling is a hand to hand combat sport between
two opponnents.
레슬링하고 비슷한 씨름은 두명의 상대가 도구없이 하는 스포츠입니다
The objective of the match is to throw the opponent to the ground.
시합의 목적은 상대방을 바닥에 눕히는 것 이지요.
If any parts of the body besides the feet of the wrestler touches
the ground he loses the match.
만약 씨름하는 사람의 신체 가운데에서 발 이외의 부분이 바닥에 닿으
면 지게 됩니다.
THe best way to picture 씨름 is to combine the conventional wrest
-ling with a little bit of judo and a little bit of 스모wrestling.
씨름을 연상하는 최선의 방법은 전형적인 레슬링에 약간의 유도와 약
간의 스모 레슬링을 더한것이라고 생각하면 아마 조금 이해가 됩니다.
But unlike the other types of wrestling mentioned above a wrestler
taking part in a 씨름 match must bind his loins and the upper thi
-gh of his right let with a two foot long cloth called '샅바.'
하지만 지금 언급한 것과 다르게 씨름 선생님들은 '샅바' 라고 부르는
길이가 2피트 정도 되는 천으로 오른쪽 다리하고 허벅지 위 쪽을 묶게
되지요.
One wrestler wears a red 샅바 while the other wears a blue 샅바.
한 선수는 빨간색의 샅바를 매고 다른 선수는 파란색의 샅바를 맵니다
The 씨름 match begins with the two participants kneeling down on
the ground facing each other.
씨름 경기에서는 두 명의 선수가 서로 얼굴을 맞대고 바닥에 무릎을
꿇은 상태에서 시작을 합니다.
Each wrestler grabs a hold of the샅바 at the loins with his right
hand while grabbing the 샅바 at the thigh with his left hand.
각 선수는 오른 쪽으로는 허리의 샅바를 잡고 왼 손으로는 허벅지의
샅바를 잡게 되지요.
The two participants then stand up and try to get the opponent on
the ground by employing various tactics and skills.
두 명의 선수는 일어서서 여러 가지 전술과 기술로 상대방을 바닥에
쓰러뜨리려고 하는 것이지요.
As to the origins of 씨름 it is believed to have gained its popul
-arity approzimately 1500 years ago as paintings of this sport we
-re discovered on a wall in a 고구려 tomb.
고구려 시대의 무덤에 있는 벽화로 본 씨름의 기원은 약 1500년 전에
성행을 한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
씨름 was a sport that was enjoyed by people in all levels of the
society from the king to the lowly servants.
씨름은 왕에서 신분이 낮은 하인까지 모든 계층의 사람들이 즐긴 스포
츠였지요.
And during the 신라 and 고려 periods 씨름 became a part of annual
festivity. On every fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month call
-ed '백중' the biggest '씨름' contests were held.
그리고 신라와 고려 시대에는 씨름이 연례행사의 일부가 되었지요. 백
중날이라고 부르는 매년 음력 7월 15일에 가장 큰 씨름대회가 열렸죠.
This day was special because the servants had a chance to proove
their worthiness and to even climb up the social ladder by displa
-ying his dominance on 씨름 matches.
이 날은 특별한 날로 하인들이 씨름 대회에서 자신들의 가치와 우월성
을 보여줌으로써 신분 상승의 기회를 가질 수 있었기 때문이지요.
씨름 still remains very popular among Koreans. Participants range
from children to the very competitive professionals. The biggest
씨름 matches are usually held on national holidays.
씨름은 여전히 한국 사회에서 인기가 높습니다. 한국 사람들은 아이들
포부터 경쟁적인 전문 씨름인까지 아주 다양하지요. 가장 큰 씨름경기
들은 명절날에 열립니다.
'장승' is a post made of either wood or stone that was usually
placed in a pair at the entrances to villages temples and at roa-
dsides.
장승은 나무나 돌로 만든 푯말로써 보통 장승 한 쌍이 마을이나 신전
의 입구나 길가에 세워져 있잖아요.
We can hardly find any 장승 nowadays you know it's really hard to
find thme. But it's still a part of the Korean folk tradition.
요즘은 장승 보는 일이 사실 그렇게 쉽지 않지만 장승은 여전히 한국
민속 전통의 하나이지요.
The top portion of one of the poles was carved into a figure res-
embling a male face and several Chinese characters meaning. The
Great General Under Heaven (천하대장군) were inscribed on this
pole as well.
한 쌍의 장승중에서 하나의 꼭대기에는 남자의 얼굴을 닮은 형태와 천
하 대장군을 뜻하는 몇 자의 한자가 새겨져 있지요.
On the other pole was a figure resembling a female face and the
Chinese characters that stand for The Female General Under Ground
(지하여장군) were inscribed on it.
다른 한 장승에는 여자 얼굴을 닮은 형태하고 지하여장군을 뜻하는 한
자가 새겨져 있지요.
If you're still having trouble picturing '장승' try to imagine a
totem pole with the aforementioned descriptions instead of the
animal figures.
만약 여러분이 아직도 장승의 모습을 상상하기 어렵다면 토템 기둥의
동물 모양 대신에 앞서서 얘기한 것들을 한번 대입해서 상상해보세요.
A pair of '장승' was erected in front of villages temples and at
roadsides to keep off evil spirits and to ensure good fortune and
prosperity to all residents.
한 쌍의 장승은 악을 막고 모든 주민의 행운과 부귀를 위하여 마을 입
구나 신전 앞 길가에 세워져 있었지요.
To make certain of their good fortune villagers held ceremonies
in honor of the spirits that resided in the two posts.
행운을 기리기 위해서 마을 사람들은 두 개의 장승에 깃들인 영혼에게
제사를 드리면서 경의를 표시했습니다.
Huge festivities involving the best fod and wine followed the ce-
remonies.
그 제사를 치룬 뒤에는 최상의 음식과 술을 포함한 큰 잔치가 벌어졌
지요.
In addition people performed rituals during times of hardship and
often prayed for a good harvest cure for deadly diseases and saf-
ety during a long journey.
덧붙여서 사람들은 상황이 어려울때 사람들은 의식을 거행하는데 주로
풍작을 위해서 또 중병의 치료를 위해서, 그리고 오랜 여행 동안에 안
전을 위해서 기도하게 됩니다.
The process of erecting a 장승 was ritualistic and a huge task in
in itself.
장승을 세우는 과역은 의례적이고 그 자체로서 힘든 노역입니다.
Firstly the raising of these posts were allowed only during the
lunar leap months that occur only once every three years.
먼저 이러한 장승은 매 3년마다 한번씩 오는 윤달에만 있습니다.
To complicate things further the carving and the placement of the
wooden posts had to be performed on the same day.
이를 더 복잡하게 만드는 것은 나무에 모양을 새겨서 장승을 만든 다
음에 세우는 것도 바로 같은 날 해야만 하기 때문입니다.
Oh this day every single villager participated.
이 날은 마을 사람들 모두가 참여를 하게 되지요.
Women prepared the food that was to be offered to 산신 that means
mountain spirit during the ceremony while men cleaned the area
where the posts were to be erected and cut and carved the trees
that became 장승.
여자들은 제사 때 산신에게 바칠 음식을 장만하고 남자들은 장승이 세
워질 곳을 청결히 하고 장승이 될 나무를 골라서 문양을 새깁니다.
In most cases pine trees were used but sometimes chestnut and al-
der trees were used as well.
대부분의 경우는 소나무가 사용되지만 때에 따라서는 밤나무, 오리 나
무도 사용이 된다고 합니다.
Its exact origins are not known but it seems to have been preval-
ent during the mid eighth century.
장승의 정확한 기원은 알려져 있지 않지만 18세기 중반의 성행을 했었
던 것 같습니다.
Interestingly the distance between villages was measured not from
the center of one to the other but from the 장승 of one village
to the 장승 of another.
흥미로운 것은 마을간의 거리는 마을과 다른 마을의 중심지로부터의
거리가 아닌 장승간의 거리로 결정을 했다는 것 입니다.

태양계 행성이름에 어떤 뜻 담겼나

`수금지화목토천해명.' 이 아홉글자는 태양을 도는 9개 행성을
태양에서 가까운 순서대로 머릿글자만 나열한 것이다.
학창 시절 이렇게 외운 기억도 있을 법하다.
태양계는 태양을 중심으로 9개의 행성과 그 위성,그리고 소행성
등을 일컫는 단어다. 태양계에 속한 이들 행성과 위성은 각기
그리스·로마 신화에서 유래된 이름을 가지고 있는데 저마다
독특한 의미를 지니고 있다.
특히 고대에 발견되지 않았던 천왕성과 해왕성,명왕성조차
그리스· 로마신화에서 이름을 따왔다는 점은 매우 흥미롭다.
태양계 첫번째 행성인 수성(水星·Mercury)은 전령의 신
헤르메스(로마식 이름 머큐리)에서 따왔다. 수성을 심부름꾼에
비유한 것은 태양에서 멀리 떨어지는 일이 없고 움직임이 빠르기
때문이라는 해석이 있 다.
금성(金星·Venus)은 미와 풍요의 여신인 아프로디테(로마식
비너스)에서 온 말. 옛날 그리스인들은 금성이 천체중에서 가장
아름답다고 생각한 것으로 추정되고 있다.
화성(火星·Mars)은 전쟁의 신인 아레스(로마식 마르스)에서
비롯됐다. 화성이 붉게 보이기 때문에 전쟁을 연상한 것으로
풀이되고 있다.
목성(木星·Jupiter)은 제우스(로마식 쥬피터)에서 따왔다.
제우스는 아버지 크로노스를 물리치고 최고의 신이 됐다.
그리스인들이 가장 큰 행성인 목성에 제우스란 이름을 붙인
것은 수수께끼다.
이는 목성이 다른 행성에 비해 특별히 밝은 것도 아니고 당시
가장 큰 행성이라는 사실이 알려지지도 않았기 때문이다.
토성(土星·Saturn)의 이름은 시간의 신인 크로노스(로마식
새턴)를 인용했다. 크로노스는 아버지 우라노스를 몰아내고
결국 자신도 아들인 제우스에게 밀려났다. 그리스인들이 토성에
크로노스라는 이름을 붙인 것은 행성중에서 가장 느리다고
여겼기 때문이라는 해석이 제시 되고 있다.
그러나 지구에서 볼때 목성 다음에 토성이 있다는 사실과
크로노스가 제우스에게 쫓겨났다는 점은 흥미롭다. 천왕성과
해왕성, 명왕성은 망원경이 발명된 뒤인 18세기 이후에 발견됐다.
그런데 어떻게 그리스·로마신화에 등장하는 신 이름이 붙여졌을까.
결론적으로 이들 행성을 발견한 천문학자들은 기존에 알려진
행성들의 이름이 그리스·로마신화에서 비롯됐다는 점에서
새로 발견한 행성에도 신의 이름을 사용한 것으로 풀이된다.
1781년 발견된 천왕성(天王星·Uranus)은 하늘의 신인
우라노스를 뜻한다. 우라노스는 최초로 세계를 지배한 신이었지만
아들인 크로노스에게 쫓겨났다. 천왕성을 발견한 천문학자 보데는
토성보다 멀리 있다는 점에서 이름을 우라노스로 정한 것으로 추정된다.
해왕성(海王星·Neptune)은 바다의 신 포세이돈(로마식 넵투누스)에서
따온 이름이다. 해왕성에서 청록색 빛이 났기 때문에 이같은 이름이
지어진 것으로 분석된다.
태양계 마지막 행성 명왕성(冥王星·Pluto)은 지하세계의 신인 하데스
(로마식 플루토)를 본딴 것. 하데스는 눈에 보이지 않는다는 뜻을 지니고
있고 명왕성이 너무 작고 보이지 않아 발견에 어려움 많았다는 점에서
이같은 이름이 지어진 것으로 알려진다.
이밖에 태양(Sun)은 태양의 신인 헬리오스(로마식 솔)에서 비롯됐고
달(Lunar)은 달의 여신인 셀레네(로마식 루나)에서 따왔다.
지구(Earth)는 대지의 여신인 가이아를 일컫는 말로 이름은
영어권에서 지은 것으로 알려진다.
서양에서와는 달리 동양에서는 태양 달 수성 금성 화성 목성 토성의
이름을 나름대로 지었다. 음양(日月)오행(水金火木土)설에 의거했다는
것이 정설이다.
그러나 망원경 발명 이후 발견된 천왕성 해왕성 명왕성은 서양 이름을
그대로 옮겨와 사용하고 있다.
