→ 사용하다: exploit; avail oneself to ~
→ 인간을 위해서: for the benefit of man; for man's interest
→ 끌어들이다: bring into; introduce into ~
→ 당당한/ 의젓한: grand; magnificent
→ 자연의 나무나 흙: natural wood and clay
→ 작은 정원: a miniature garden
→ 옮겨넣다: transfer into; carry in
(ANS 1) The Korean are more inclined to bring nature into their lives than to exploit it for the benefit of man. They prefer to build their houses out of natural wood and clay rather than to build grand mansions out of stone. Inside the houses they make miniature gardens, into which they transfer nature. To be always with nature _ this is the Korean attitude toward nature.
(ANS 2) Korean people have more inclination to introduce nature into their lives than to use it for man' interest. They want to have their houses built out of natural wood and clay more than to have magnificent mansions built out of stone. Inside the houses they make miniature gardens, in which they carry nature. To be always in the bosom of nature _ this is the way Korean people deal with nature.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who promotes Habitat for Humanity, has toured various countries since 1994.
In the summer of 2001, he visited Asan, Korea, to participate in a house-building project.

Living in cave homes is more comfortable than you might think.
They are naturally cool in summer and warm in winter.
The floors are often covered with tiles or rugs, and the walls are painted.
There are windows and doors.
Many cave homes have telephones, and some even have fax and internet connections.
In Guadix, Spain, you can look out over a hillside that is covered with television antennas from the cave houses that lie beneath the surface.

Clocks mark the passage of time - not only of each hour and day, but of whole lives.
They are closely involved in people's lives.
Some people once held the superstitious belief that clocks could predict the future of the houses they were in.
When the rhythm of a clock changed suddenly, it was considered a sign of approaching death.
Many stories have been told of clocks that stopped when their owners died.
It is a very old custom, in some areas, to stop the clocks in a house which has had a death.
This is done to show that the person who died no longer has anything to do with time.

Severe weather is a constant possibility all over the globe, but we never really expect our own area to be affected.
However, last night was different.
About ten o'clock, a tornado hit Lucedale.
This violent weather destroyed nine homes near the downtown area.
In addition to these nine houses that were completely destroyed, many others in the area had heavy damage.
Amazingly, no one was injured in last night's terrible storm.
Because of the rapid reaction of state and local weather watchers, most of the area's residents saw the warnings on television.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the rich of New York were deeply impressed by the parks in Europe and suggested establishing a park.
The 843-acre land made of marsh and gravel, which was hard to develop as land for housing, was purchased to be designed as a park.
Full-scale construction began after kicking the poor residents out to other regions.
In the respect that the United States adopted many ideas from Europe for development, the history of Central Park is that of the United States.

As many factories started to be built and cities grew, there were more and more jobs in city areas.
As more people moved to cities for the jobs, they needed places to live in.
Soon houses gave way to apartment buildings.
Also, to provide goods and services for so many people, new businesses grew up in the cities.
These new businesses also needed space, and unused land was hard to find.
When most of the land was taken up, builders started to build in the only direction left―up! This is why skyscrapers were first built in the cities.

A national festival which is celebrated in Japan is New Year's Day.
Families decorate the front entrances of their houses with kado-matsu, which is usually a pair of pine trees, which mean long life.
Representing loyalty, three stems of bamboo are placed behind the trees.
Another decoration at the entrance to the house is taboo-rope.
Straw and strips are hung on the rope.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

Many people might think that they choose friends on the basis of personal characteristics such as intelligence, personality, interest, or even physical appearance.
But a study of a housing complex for married students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that physical distance can be a decisive factor.
Researchers asked couples to list their friends in the complex.
They found that residents were far more likely to list the couple in the next apartment than the one that lived two doors away.
A distance of thirty feet made the difference between friends and strangers!

In many countries, overcrowded cities face a major problem.
This has been mainly caused by the drift of large numbers of people from the rural areas.
These people have become dissatisfied with the traditional life of farming, and have come to the cities hoping for better work and pay.
Unfortunately, however, poor conditions in the urban areas, such as lack of housing, worsening sanitation and unemployment, bring about an increase in poverty, disease and crime.

This belief in the powers of "blue" still exists in some parts of the world today.
In the Middle East, Arabs often paint the doors of their houses blue to frighten away demons.
They also dress young children in blue to protect them from these evil forces.

That is scarcely surprising, considering that survivors of earthquakes
that rocked the Sicilian province of Belice 13 years ago are still living
in temporary housing.

streets and tightly packed wooden houses.

Egypt's problems defy easy solution. The per capita income is a meager $469 per
year. Its middle class is beset by an acute lack of affordable housing. Industry
is virtually stagnant, and productive foreign investment is anemic.
The country now imports half of its food.

Much recent housing and city planning has been handicapped because those
who have undertaken the work have had no clear notion of the social functions
of the city.

To understand something thoroughly, we must know its parts. For
example, we know a house when we are familiar with its rooms and with the
various details of its construction. Words are built much like houses;
we shall understand words better by familiarizing ourselves with the
elements of which they are made.

Economic expansion continued in May. Government reports showed gains in
industrial production, personal income, and housing starts. Housing construction,
however, remained sluggish, mainly because the costs of new homes has risen faster
than average incomes, but housing starts did show a small increase over those of
April.

A restive younger generation has shown growing dissatisfaction with

The technique of writing is no less difficult than that of the other arts

anyone can write well enough to write a book.
Writing seems now the favorite relaxation of the human race.

to the bottle.
There is an impression abroad that everyone has it in him to write one
book; but if by this is implied a good book the impression is false.

In no other town than London is it so important, nay, essential, to have
good friends because practically everything that constitutes the charm
of London life takes place behind closed doors, either of clubs or private
houses; nowhere does social life count for so little. The Englishman is
unwilling to exhibit himself in public and still more so to mix with a
crowd of strangers.
The function of the London street is simply to contain the traffic,
which is dense that its stream sweeps the individual along with it.

After struggling for nearly nine years against a protracted economic
recession, housing is finally showing a substantial amount of growth.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), lower
mortgage rates and prices will boost construction of new homes by
11 percent this year and 9 percent next year.
In addition, sales of existing homes are expected to jump 14 percent
over the course of the year.
Despite these encouraging figures, the market is still much weaker
than it was a decade ago.

Recently new building codes came into effect in our city. All new houses
must now be built with proper building materials so that heat will not
escape unnecessarily during the winter. The laws have had a definite
effect. There has been a fifty percent saving in the amount of natural
gas and electricity used. The city is doing other things to save energy.
Buses, partly supported by the city, transport many people throughout the

The villagers were busy rebuilding their old houses which had been
destroyed during the war. Shouts of joy arose as the villagers saw their
own children returning home after they were freed from the enemy. They
dropped what they were doing and ran out to meet the children, who rushed
on ahead to this joyful reunion. There were tears and laughter.

"Providing North Koreans with rice and housing will not earn the true hearts of the North Korean people.
Some day when South and North Korea are unified, the North Koreans will earnestly respect South Koreans for our long history and profound cultural assets," she said.
"If we show them only our materialistic possessions, we will never reach a cultural and sentimental unification of the two peoples.
The culture and arts policies of the 21st century will set true social and moral standards of the society and lay the foundation of Korea."

A distinctively American architecture began with Frank Lloyd Wright, who
had taken to heart the admonition that form should follow function, and
who thought of buildings not as separate architectural entities but as
parts of an organic whole that included the land, the community, and the
society. In a very real way the houses of colonial New England and some
of the southern plantations had been functional, but Wright was the
first architect to make functionalism the authoritative principle for
public as well as for domestic buildings.

As early as 1906 he built the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois, the
first of those churches that did so much to revolutionize ecclesiastical
architecture in the United States. Thereafter he turned his genius to
such miscellaneous structures as houses, schools, office buildings, and
factories, among them the famous Larkin Building in Buffalo, New York,
and the Johnson Wax Company Building in Racine, Wisconsin.
Johnson Wax Company
Building

After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline.
It continued falling until in 1966 it stood at the lowest level in 25
years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the
depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian
society. Young people were staying at school longer; more woman were
working; young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before
starting families; rising living standards were cutting down the size of
families. It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the
trend toward smaller families that had occurred all through the Western
world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.

At least a dozen large stone houses took shape below the bluffs of Chaco
Canyon in northwest New Mexico. They were built with masonry walls more
than a meter thick and adjoining apartments to accommodate dozens even
hundreds, of families. The largest, later named Pueblo Bonito (Pretty
Town) by the Spanish, rose in five terraced stories, contained more than
800 rooms, and could have housed a population of 1,000 or more.

Before the 1500's, the western plains of North America were dominated by
farmers. One group, the Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River
country, primarily in present-day North Dakota. They had large villages
of houses built close together. The tight arrangement enabled the
Mandans to protect themselves more easily from the attacks of others who
might seek to obtain some of the food these highly capable farmers
stored from one year to the next.
"Mandan"

The Anasazi lived in houses constructed of adobe and wood. Anasazi
houses were originally built in pits and were entered from the roof. But
around the year 700 A.D., the Anasazi began to build their homes above
ground and join them together into rambling multistoried complexes,
which the Spanish called pueblos or villages. Separate subterranean
rooms in these pueblos ― known as kivas or chapels ― were set aside
for religious ceremonials. Each kiva had a fire pit and a hole that was
believed to lead to the underworld. The largest pueblos had five stories
and more than 800 rooms. The Anasazi family was matrilinear, that is,
descent was traced through the female.

For two decades, Folger has watched his people hand over
their houses, schools and baseball fields, their broad
avenues and manicured lawns, and flee to the United States.

Housing was subsidized, as were telephones, electricity and
water. Wages were decent, and jobs on the canal or in the
military were guaranteed to any Zonian who graduated from
Balboa High School. A complete system of U.S. government
benefits kept residents apart from the realities of life in
Latin America.
"We had our own police department, fire department,
everything," says Jim Fehrenbach, 50. "When you came across
the border (of the Zone), it was like coming into a whole
other country. It was Utopia."
