grammatical meaning 문법에 맞추다;문법상의 문제를 논하다.
English grammar is very difficult and few writers have avoided making
mistakes in it. So heedful a writer as Henry James, for instance, on
occasion wrote so ungrammatically that a schoolmaster, finding such
errors in a schoolboy's essay, would be justly indignant. It is necessary
to know grammar, and it is better to write grammatically than not, but it
is well to remember that grammar is common speech formulated. Usage is
the only test. I prefer a phrase that is easy and unaffected to a phrase
that is grammatical.
영문법은 어려워서 잘못을 범하지 않는 작가가 거의 없다. 예를 들어 헨리
제임스처럼 주의 깊은 작가도 국민학교 학생의 작문에서 발견되면 선생님이
당연히 화를 낼만큼 문법에 맞지 않는 실수를 범할 때가 있다. 문법을 아는
것은 필요하며 문법적으로 글을 쓰는 것이 좋지만 문법이란 일반 언어를
공식화한 것이라는 점을 명심하는 것이 좋다. 관행이 유일한 척도이다.
나로서는 문법적인 것보다 쉽고 자연스런 구문이 더 좋다.

강연은 가능한 한 많은 생생한 실례를 사용해서 효과를 높이도록 최선을 다하
겠습니다. 이 강연을 통해 참석자들은 이러한 문제점들에 관해 어느 정도는 파
악할 수 있으리라 봅니다. 물론 실제로 응용할 수 있게 되기까지는 훨씬 더 많
은 더 많은 시간과 자세한 커리큘럼이 필요하겠지만 일입니다.
이 강연내용의 개요가 사전준비를 하시는 데 도움이 되었으면 합니다.

extended during our meeting of April 1. Appearing below is very roughly
what I hope to cover during the course of the two lectures to be
delivered on May 17 and May 24.

I will do my best to reinforce the lecture with as many live examples
as possible. The lectures should give the people attending at least an
idea of the problems concerned, though, of course, application would
require a far more elaborate curriculum as well as time.

I hope this outline is enough for you to proceed with preliminary
matters.

Michigan examination and his score, 97, indicates that he "has a
sufficient grasp of grammatical structure to allow (him) to work in an
environment where English is the medium of communication.

with high school educations. It should be remembered, however, that
this is a paper ability and does not necessarily mean that it is

구술과 작문시험 결과 문법, 발음, 어휘에 있어 약간의 문제점은 있었지만, 영
어를 쓰고 말하는 능력은 실생활에 있어서 별 어려움이 없는 정도의 수준이라
고 말씀드릴 수 있습니다.
