Former students are frequently embarrassing in their assertion that you
awakened them to think, or to think clearly, or to feel qualities in
things and ideas and people they had never perceived before. They can be
incredibly kind, even or especially when they think they are being
objective and just. For it is difficult to distinguish the persons from
the things they communicate, and many a teacher gets a certain glamour
in a student's memory. To a very young mind, if only for a short time,
the teacher is confused with the things taught. This may, indeed, be
very bad for the teacher, who, in the mirror of his student's
generosity, makes something like the same identification, too. His
colleagues will correct him, and many of his unbemused students would,
too, given the opportunity.
