Her novels dominate all other literature of the early part of this century.

The chairman of the committee tends to dominate.

Playing the trumpet with dazzling originality, Louis Armstrong
dominated jazz for 20 years.

Two species of large mammals once dominated the North American prairies : the
American bison and the pronghorn antelope.

The shoe industry is dominated by a few large manufacturers

Our view is that there should be an institutional system in this
country as there is in advanced countries to prevent industrial
conglomerates from dominating the media. We believe it is to the
detriment of the state and society.

This is more than natural since chaebol or business groups are apt to
use the media companies under their control as a tool to promote or
protect their owners by covering their faults or speaking for their selfish
interests. It is noted that the government bans chaebol from dominating
banking institutions.

The lengendary Colossus of Rhodes, a bronze statue of the sun god that
dominated the horbor of the Greek seaport, was one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The human brain has two hemispheres.
Although the hemispheres cooperate for many functions, they control very different activities.
Thanks to the left side of our brain, we are able to master and control language, using it to communicate our thoughts.
It is the left side of our brain that helps us make sense.
It gives order and logic to our speech.
The right hemisphere is less important to language production and appear to be more related with the creation of images.
Research suggests that the right brain dominates during infancy.
Babies perceive the world by visualizing, which is controlled by the right side.

Cars appeared all over America and gradually replaced the horse and cart.
People welcomed this development.
Unfortunately, however, cars were neither safer nor did they stop pollution.
Whether we like it or not, our lives today are dominated by the motor car.
Yet, despite its importance, the car as we know it will soon no longer exist.
Before long it will use up all the fuel, which means that either new fuels must be found or the car will disappear from the face of the earth forever.

Life is unfair. Yet life is good.
Our ability to thoughtfully deal with the unfairness and build on the good can make the difference between a happy and unhappy life.
One reason so many of us cannot get out of pain easily is our tendency to think,
“That shouldn't have happened to me. That was unfair.”
When we allow such thinking to dominate our thoughts, we begin to bear resentments.

We've always known that this violence comes from the urge humans feel to control and dominate one another, but only recently have we studied this phenomenon from the inside, from the point of view of the individual's consciousness.

With the fact that the majority of genetic diseases are intractable to drug therapies or gene therapies, there is a great difference of opinion as to whether steps should be taken to prevent the birth of genetically impaired children.
Many are opposed for religious reasons to trying to control the genetic destinies of children.
Others, recalling Germany's eugenic practices, have an equally strong abhorrence of genetic-based reproductive decisions.
But, it is unfair that some families' lives are dominated by the horrors of genetic disease.
Terminating the existence of a genetically disabled fetus is incomparably more compassionate than allowing an infant to come into the world tragically impaired.
There is, then, the question of who should have the authority to make the decisions of this kind.

In a world dominated by competition, parents understandably want to give their kids every advantage.
There is hardly a religion on the planet that does not teach its believers to enhance the welfare of their children.
The most likely way for eugenics to enter into our lives is through the front door as nervous parents struggle to ensure that their children are not left behind in the genetic race.

Although the states dominated economic activity during this period, the
federal government was not inactive. Its goals were the facilitation of
western settlement and the development of native industries. Toward
these ends the federal government pursued several courses of action. It
established a national bank to stabilize banking activities in the
country and, in part, to provide a supply of relatively easy money to
the frontier, where it was greatly needed for settlement.

Northern North America is part of a larger circumpolar ecological domain
that continues across the narrow Bering Strait into Siberia and northern
Europe. The overall circumpolar environment in the 1500's was not very
different from the environment of the present. This vast landmass had a
continental climate and was dominated by cold arctic air throughout a
long winter and spring season. Summer temperature ranged from near
freezing to the mid-20's Celsius, while winter temperature were often as
low as 40 degrees below zero Celsius.

By comparison with these familiar yardsticks, the distances to the
galaxies are incomprehensibly large, but they too are made more
manageable by using a time calibration, in this case the distance that
light travels in one year. On such a scale the nearest giant spiral
galaxy, the Andromeda galaxy, is two million light years away. The most
distant luminous objects seen by telescopes are probably ten thousand
million light years away. Their light was already halfway here before
the Earth even formed. The light from the nearby Virgo galaxy set out
when reptiles still dominated the animal world.

The first two decades of this century were dominated by the microbe
hunters. These hunters had tracked down one after another of the
microbes responsible for the most dreaded scourges of many centuries ;
tuberculosis, cholera, diphtheria.

In view of the inexorable progress in science, we can expect that the
gene hunters will be replaced in the spotlight. When and by whom? Which
kind of hunter will dominate the scene in the last decade of our waning
century and in the early decades of the next ? I wonder whether the
hunters who will occupy the spotlight will be neurobiologists who apply
the techniques of the enzyme and gene hunters to the functions of the
brain. What to call them? The head hunters. I will return to them later.

Before the 1500's, the western plains of North America were dominated by
farmers. One group, the Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River
country, primarily in present-day North Dakota. They had large villages
of houses built close together. The tight arrangement enabled the
Mandans to protect themselves more easily from the attacks of others who
might seek to obtain some of the food these highly capable farmers
stored from one year to the next.

Growing tightly packed together and collectively weaving a dense canopy
of branches, a stand of red alder trees can totally dominate a site to
the exclusion of almost everything else. Certain species such as
salmonberry and sword ferns have adapted to the limited sunlight
dappling through the canopy, but few evergreen trees will survive there;
still fewer can compete with the early prodigious growth of alders.

A Douglas fir tree reaches its maximum rate of growth ten years later
than an alder, and if two of them begin life at the same time, the alder

such as hemlock may remain badly suppressed beneath aggressive young

사용되는 말입니다. have a market presence 는 무역 관련
풀어 쓸 수 있는데 예컨대 have a market share of 71%라 하면 그
The company has a market share of 71%는 The company dominates
the market with a market share of 71% 또는 The company
dominates 71% of the market
The company has a dominant power in the Egyptian market
grabbing 71% of the market.
Egypt's TV market is 32% dominated by Korean brands.
위에서와 같이 record a
market share of OO% 또는 grab the market by holding a market
share of OO%와 같이 record a market share, grab the market을
쓸 수도 있지만 dominate를 응용하여 dominate the market, be
An industry executive said Korean home electronics
makers have seen their products secure a greater share of the
market in some African countries.
see their products secure ~ 부분을 굳이 "더 많은 시장을
중요한 것은 secure a
share of the market 또는 secure a market share와 같은 표현을
예문에서 an industry executive 역시
Korean electronics
companies secured a firm ground in the OO market이라고 해도
ground와 더불어 foothold(기지, 거점)라는 말도 이용할 수
Korean home electronics makers are struggling to gain a
greater foothold in some African nations
