In its typical feeding position, a sea otter swims along on its back as
it uses a rock to crack the shellfish on which it feeds. Then, tucking the
rock into a pocketlike fold of skin under its arm(in which it also often
keeps a supply of extra food),it will turn and dive to the bottom for more
shellfish. Otters have been seen playing with rocks and shells, throwing
them from one paw to another for hours at a time.
mother otters usually shelter their young on their chests. If they have to
leave the pups for any length of time, mother otters may wrap them in the
strand of a kelp plant to keep them from drifting away. Although an otter
is large at birth-five to six pounds-it receives maternal care until it is
three or four years old, by which time, like its parents, it can dive to
depths of 100 feet or more.

Under certain circumstances, the human body must cope with gases at
greater-than- normal atmospheric pressure. For example, gas pressures
increase rapidly during a dive made with scuba gear because the
breathing equipment allows divers to stay underwater longer and dive
deeper.

Nitrogen, which composes 80 percent of the air we breathe, usually
causes a balmy feeling of well-being at this pressure. At a depth of 5
atmospheres, nitrogen causes symptoms resembling alcohol intoxication,
known as nitrogen narcosis. Nitrogen narcosis apparently results from a
direct effect on the brain of the large amounts of nitrogen dissolved in
the blood. Deep dives are less dangerous if helium is substituted for
nitrogen, because under these pressures helium does not exert a similar
narcotic effect.

Korea will see spiraling price hikes among daily commodities
next month unless inflationary pressure stemming from the
won's meltdown against the dollar is subdued. Mostly affected
by the won's weakness against the greenback, public utility
charges and industrial goods prices have soared to record
highs these days, stirring concern about a critical level of
inflation, economic analysts said yesterday.
Stem from ~은 ~으로부터 발생하다 (arise from)이고 melt-down은
상하수도(water supply and drainage), 교통(transportation) 등
Soar to record high
Following a 16- to 22-percent surge in express and
cross-country buses, basic taxi fares are expected to go up
an average of 23 percent, from 1,000 won to 1,300 won,
starting Monday.
go up an average of ~ (평균 ~ 정도 상승하다)라는 표현도 함께

Pull someone's chestnuts o
ut of the fire.
Tourist:Oh, my, what shall I do? What shall I do?
Travel agent:Excuse me, ma'am. What's the matter?
Tourist:I just dropped my camera into the water.
Travel agent:Where? Oh, the water of this lake is so clear that I
can see the camera from here.
Tourist:Oh, my, what shall I do?
Travel agent:Don't worry, ma'am. I'll dive into the water and pull
your chestnuts out of the fire.
Tourist:Oh, the fire might be very hot. Oh, no, the water might be
very cold.
