In 1926, there was a double tragedy in her life because her much-loved mother died.
Agatha Christie suffered a nervous breakdown, and one night she abandoned her car and mysteriously disappeared.
She went missing for 11 days and was found in a hotel in the north of England.
It is interesting to note that it was while she was suffering so much that she wrote one of her masterpieces, The Murder of Roger Ackroyal.

Why was it that the city died? Researchers have found no signs of infections or invasions.
But they have found signs that suggest the people of this city themselves burned their temples and some of their other buildings.
Excavations revealed that piles of wood had been placed around these structures and set on fire.
Some archaeologists think that the ancient urban people must have burned their temples
and left their city in anger against their gods for permitting a long famine.

Clocks mark the passage of time - not only of each hour and day, but of whole lives.
They are closely involved in people's lives.
Some people once held the superstitious belief that clocks could predict the future of the houses they were in.
When the rhythm of a clock changed suddenly, it was considered a sign of approaching death.
Many stories have been told of clocks that stopped when their owners died.
It is a very old custom, in some areas, to stop the clocks in a house which has had a death.
This is done to show that the person who died no longer has anything to do with time.

Unfortunately, in the past 30 years the number of elephants has decreased markedly.
There are a few reasons for this.
Some have died in accidents.
Sri Lanka has many gem pits, and when baby elephants become separated from their parents,
they sometimes fall into one of them.
Other elephants are wounded when they step

spited barriers put up by villagers.
If their wounds become infected, they can die.
They can also die from gunshot wounds because although it is against the law, people try to shoot them.

UNICEF reported that Korean children are most exposed to “death by traffic accidents” among OECD countries.
It announced that Korea ranks first with 25.6 deaths for every 100,000 children.
Many drivers in Korea ignore traffic lights and drive dangerously.
In Korea, 71% of the children die by getting struck by cars while walking.
If we observe traffic regulations and keep safe driving in mind, the nation can save about 12,000 young lives each year.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history.
As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell.
Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River.
As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats ― Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat ― were disclosed!
In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them.
By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

There is a famous story about a faithful dog named Shep.
When his master died, Shep followed the coffin to the train station.
The next day, he began to wait for his master at the station and all he wanted was to see him again.
Day after day, he expected to see him step out of the train but to no avail.

Oil is usually called petroleum.
It is very complex, but is made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen.
Both carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons.
They are the remains of ancient plants and animals.
These plants and animals lived and died millions of years ago.
When they died, they were covered by mud, and bacteria broke down the organic remains.
The weight of the upper layers and the heat from the pressure eventually changed the mud into solid rock.
It changed the organic material into oil and natural gas.

Every human being will grow older and die.
Aging in itself is not a disease or a sickness, but as people age, disease often follows and the elderly need others' help.
In addition, the percentage of senior citizens in the world has increased very quickly, and our society is no exception.
The problem for us is that we have left the care of the elderly to their families.
We must change our attitude toward this issue and develop more systematic social programs.
The sooner we realize the importance of the role of government in this matter, the smaller the final cost to society as a whole will be.

All desert plants have tricks for dealing with great heat and long periods of dryness, or drought.
Many small desert plants appear on the landscape only when heavy rains fall.
These plants “wait out” periods of drought underground.
They exist for months or even years as seeds buried in the soil.
When rains come, these seeds spring to life.
The young plants quickly grow into adult plants and, in turn, throw out a new bunch of seeds before they die.
All this happens within a few weeks.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you want to get perfect shots while camping.
Take pictures of your family.
Nature shots can be really nice, but you'll be looking at those old family camp photos in ten years.
Bring extra batteries.
Most cameras use really special batteries and you may not be able to find them at a camp store.
Temperature can affect your batteries and film.
If you are taking pictures in chilly weather, your batteries may die.
Don't throw them away.
Just warm them up and you'll be ready to shoot again.
Film does not like heat so try to keep your film in a cool spot.
You can’t take too many pictures, so bring lots of film.

have long believed that either a change in climate or widespread disease killed the world’s huge animals, such as the woolly mammoth.
Some evidence suggests, though, that these theories may be incorrect.
In Australia, scientists have dug up bone and eggshell fossils that indicate a massive die-off of large animals about 46,000 years ago.
This extinction occurred after humans arrived on that continent about 52,000 years ago.
These time frames suggest that people are responsible for the animals' disappearance.
Similar evidence comes from North America.
Humans arrived there about 13,000 years ago.
Approximately 1,200 years after their appearance, about thirty species of large animals were gone.

In the mid-sixties, a lawyer made an agreement to give some money every month to an old lady in her seventies.
After she died, he would then live in her apartment.
This contract seemed beneficial to both of them.
As for the old lady, she received a fixed amount of money from him monthly.
And as for the lawyer, he would obtain the apartment without paying a large amount of money at one time.
Besides, he thought that she would die before long considering the average life expectancy.
In those days, it was about 70.
However, she lived to be 122 years old.
He had given money to her for 30 years, but he died in advance of her.

In the Solomon Islands in the south pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging.
If a tree is too large to cut down with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it.
Woodsmen with special powers creep up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs.
They continue this for thirty days.
The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the shouting kills the spirit of the tree.
According to the villagers, it always works.
Ah, those poor naive innocents.
Such strangely charming habits of the jungle.

Each language is a unique expression of the human experience of the world.
Every time a language dies, we have less evidence for understanding patterns in the structure and function of human language, human prehistory, and the maintenance of the world's diverse ecosystems.
Above all, speakers of these languages may experience the loss of their language as a loss of their original ethnic and cultural identity.

Like the moral issues surrounding suicide, the problem of euthanasia has long been in the center of thinkers' discussion.
People who favors to end the life of a terminally ill patient insist physicians only prolong the suffering of the patient.
They mean, even though he or she is facing death, the patient can choose to end his or her life to escape the unbearable pain.
But those who oppose it say there is no moral distinction between killing someone and allowing someone to die.
They regard both of them as ‘murder'.

The rich and unhappy are likely to prize possessions such as a fancy car or an expensive necklace.
Unfortunately, they don't see objects as a link to other people but as something to stand out from others.
For example, Doris Duke was the only child of a multi-millionaire.
By the time she reached adulthood, she could fulfill any desire
― from the B-25 bomber she remodeled for luxury travel, to her ceiling-high goldfish tanks.
Yet when she died three years ago, news reports detailed a lonely life of deep unhappiness.

I didn't know how well my mother could keep a trust until I was going through her things after she died.
I discovered something I had long forgotten.

I thought I'd die.
That was the funniest thing I'd heard in a long time.
Seth was in hysterics, and so was the class.
I sent him out, and a couple of minutes later, we all saw him and his father leaving the building.
They both looked in and waved, and everybody was laughing.

“Unless you're unmarried, childless, and without property, writing a will is one of the most important things you can do to protect your loved ones.” says a lawyer.
If you die without a will, your estate is turned over to the state, which divides your assets according to the succession laws of your province.
This may mean costly and lengthy legal battles for your survivors, and even worse, your loved ones may not be provided for as you wished.

In 1991, hospital emergency rooms reported 21,030 injuries to youngsters caused by falling out of shopping carts.

The child was standing in the basket.
When the cart came to a sudden stop, he lost his balance, tumbled backward and fell out, hitting his head.

When the aerials are down and all the central place of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then you are grown old, even at twenty.
But as long as your aerials are up, to catch the optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

I have never smoked, but I have been exposed to secondhand smoke since early childhood.
Last fall I was diagnosed with lung cancer.
I had major surgery followed by five horrific months of chemotherapy.
My weight dropped to 92 pounds.
I lost all my hair, had hallucinations, nightmares and wanted to die.
To have gone through all this hell when I've never smoked a cigarette has made me very bitter.

I experienced no symptoms.

I am the mother of two young children and I don't deserve to die this way because I have never smoked, at least that's what I thought.

Last year 97 children died of measles, an illness that could have been prevented with a single shot.
Dozens of others became mentally retarded.
It is heartbreaking to think that these children could have been alive and well today if they had been given a single, simple inoculation.

Living is the process of continuous rebirth.
The tragedy in the life of most us is that we die before we are fully born.
―Erich Fromm

Dear Sons: This is not a request. It is an order.
I have tried to live with dignity and I want to die the same way.

Should I become old and ill and unable to make a rational decision, you are instructed to give the physician orders not to attempt to prolong my life by using extraordinary measures.

Every year more than 6,000 people die and 130,000 are injured in home fires.
Many of these casualties are among the nation's most precious resources, our children.
Even more troubling is the fact that many of these deaths could have been prevented had the smoke detectors been operating.

A 65-year-old St. Louis woman died recently in a blaze that swept through her second-story apartment.
Inside, fire authorities found a smoke detector sitting on a cabinet with the batteries lying on top of it.

Tribute to Dad
A few days ago, my best friend died.
He was my teacher, my idol, my symbol of strength and protection.
He was also my father.
Last year on my 17th birthday, I obtained my driver's license.
Three weeks later, I had a minor accident.
I was scared to death of what my father would say when the police called him.
I wasn't hurt, but I had a few scratches and was dazed by the impact.

This is the second year my father, brothers, sisters and I have gotten together to give my mother flowers for her birthday.
The only thing missing is my mother.
She died in January of 1994.

On the morning of January 14, 1990, Jim Williams came downstairs to feed the cat and make himself a cup of tea.
After doing that, but before picking up the newspaper from the front stoop, he collapsed and died.

News of Williams's sudden death at the age of fifty-nine immediately gave rise to speculation that he had been murdered or that he had taken an overdose of drugs.
But the coroner announced that there had been no indication of foul play or drug abuse and that Williams appeared to have died of natural causes, most likely a heart attack.
After an autopsy, the coroner was more specific: Williams had died of pneumonia.
This started another rumor―that he might have died of AIDS.
But Williams had shown no signs of being ill; in fact, only a few hours before dying he had attended a party where he had been in good spirits and in apparent good health.

He died a millionaire.

He died penniless and friendless.
